UK: The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has launched the 3rd Innovandi Open Challenge 2024, with a focus on the deployment of carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) for the decarbonisation of cement and concrete. Possible fields of study include process-integrated and end-of-pipe capture. The 1st Innovandi Open Challenge 2024 previously focused on CCUS, and has now produced two projects at pilot stage.

Cement, innovation and environmental, social and governance (ESG) director Claude Loréa said "Our industry is committed to achieving net zero and the development of carbon capture technology is a key part of that work. Our world-leading Innovandi Open Challenge programme has already seen remarkable progress in just two years, with start-ups and our member companies working together. We're looking forward to seeing what this year's applicants can bring, to build on the extensive work that is already underway across the world."

Canada: Heidelberg Materials North America has awarded Technip Energies a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract for its carbon capture project at the Edmonton cement plant in Alberta. The project will deploy Shell’s Cansolv CO₂ capture system to remove 1Mt/yr from the plant’s flue gases. Carbon capture will commence in late 2026, subject to funding finalisation.

Heidelberg Materials North America’s Northwest regional vice president, cement operations, Joerg Nixdorf said “We are excited to take this latest step in our journey to produce the world’s first net-zero cement.” Nixdorf added “With each milestone we come closer to realising our vision of leading the decarbonisation of the cement industry.”

Technip Energies’ senior vice president of decarbonization solutions Christophe Malaurie said “We are pleased to have been selected by Heidelberg Materials North America to provide the FEED of this groundbreaking project in Canada. Leveraging our carbon capture solution powered by the Shell Cansolv CO₂ capture system, we are committed to supporting the decarbonisation of the cement industry and Heidelberg towards the production of net-zero cement.”

Norway: Aker Solutions has won a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract to develop Hafslund Oslo Celsio’s Port of Oslo CO₂ terminal. The unit will facilitate the transport of CO₂ to the Øygarden Northern Lights site under the Longship carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative. The initiative involves Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe’s Brevik cement plant.

The upcoming Global CemCCUS conference on carbon capture, utilisation and storage in Oslo, Norway, will include a visit to the Brevik cement plant on 16 May 2024.

Netherlands: Siam Cement Group has acquired new shares in electrochemistry start-up Avantium through its affiliate Senfi Ventures. Reuters has reported that the Thailand-based group now holds a 3% stake in Avantium, through total investments of US$4.82m.

Avantium’s technologies include the Volta system, which produces commercial chemicals using captured CO₂. Avantium previously tested the system at a Titan Cement Group cement plant in Greece.

Greece: Titan Cement Group has appeared on carbon disclosure organisation CDP's A List for corporate transparency and climate impact mitigation. The company achieved an A- for water security. Titan Cement Group says that the recognition aligns with its 2026 Green Growth strategy.

Titan Cement Group reduced its CO₂ emissions by 10% between 2020 and 2023. In 2023, it commenced construction of the 1.9Mt/yr IFESTOS carbon capture and storage project.

UK: Heidelberg Materials UK has awarded Japan-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) a front end engineering design (FEED) contract for an upcoming carbon capture installation at its Padeswood cement plant in Flintshire. Australia-based Worley will also collaborate on the project, which is scheduled to become operational in 2028. The partners aim to capture up to 800,000t/yr of CO₂ using MHI’s amine solvent-based Advanced KM CDR process. MHI previously conducted a pre-FEED carbon capture study at the Padeswood plant, beginning in 2022.

Heidelberg Materials UK chief executive officer Simon Willis said "This is a decisive next step in our plans to install carbon capture technology at our Padeswood cement works. Once operational, it will provide net zero building materials for major projects across the country, enabling us to help decarbonise the construction industry and meet our ambition to become a net zero business."

MHI CEO and head of engineering solutions Kenji Terasawa said "Heidelberg Materials UK has committed to reaching net zero carbon by 2050 and will be deploying our proprietary carbon capture technology, the Advanced KM CDR process, to tackle this challenge, leading the way in the UK's cement industry."

Taiwan: Taiwan Cement Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ThyssenKrupp Polysius. Under the MoU, the partners will implement carbon capture projects aimed at capturing 100,000t/yr (10%) of Taiwan Cement Corporation’s CO₂ emissions by 2030. This will involve the development of a new generation of pure oxygen carbon capture technology in Line 1 of Taiwan Cement Corporation’s Hualien Heping cement plant. This technology aims to increase the concentration of captured CO₂ to over 90% and reduce the energy consumption of carbon capture. The Hualien Heping plant project will conclude in 2026, with the commercialisation of the technology to follow before 2030. Taiwan Cement Corporation plans to supply its own captured CO₂ to various other industries, including industrial welding, chemicals and food processing.

Taiwan Cement Corporation chair Zhang Anping said "Cement has created the civilised society we live in today, and Taiwan Cement Corporation will continue to participate in energy transformation and support the development of future civilisation. This cooperation with Polysius, a golden brand in the cement industry, is to solve the problem of greenhouse gas emissions, creating the future not only for the cement industry but for the whole world."

Spain: The Spanish cement manufacturers' association, Oficemen, has signed a two-year co-operation agreement with utilities provider Enagás. Under the agreement, the pair will explore decarbonisation techniques and solutions, including the development of infrastructure for transporting captured CO₂, as well as hydrogen and oxygen. Oficemen members reduced their total CO₂ emissions by 44% between 1990 and 2022. Europa Press News has reported that Oficemen believes that carbon capture and storage (CCS) will be crucial in realising the industry’s 2050 climate neutrality goal. Oficemen became the first industrial association in Spain to publish a net zero roadmap in 2020.

Germany: Heidelberg Materials will stop producing clinker at its 700,000t/yr Hanover cement plant in Lower Saxony later in 2024, and transition the plant to grinding-only. The producer took the decision following a ‘significant drop’ in its cement sales, amid local low construction activity and a market shift towards lower-cement materials. Nonetheless, it intend to raise its capacity utilisation at its 1Mt/yr Ennigerloh, 900,000t/yr Geseke and 400,000t/yr Paderborn cement plants in neighbouring North Rhine-Westphalia. These will supply clinker to the Hanover grinding plant in future. Heidelberg Materials says that the plant's strategic location will ensure its continued importance in regional cement supply. Part of the 120-strong workforce at the Hanover plant will remain at the new grinding plant. The company will collaborate with the works council to find ‘acceptable solutions’ for the remainder of the team, possibly including intra-group transfers to other divisions and locations.

The Calix consortium’s on-going LEILAC 2 carbon capture project will now move from the Hanover plant to another Heidelberg Materials plant. Australia-based Calix is collaborating with Heidelberg Materials to identify a suitable new site as quickly as possible.

Italy: Utilities provider Snam says that it has begun selecting partners for its upcoming Ravenna carbon capture and storage (CCS) transport network. The network will connect hard-to-abate industrial facilities in Ravenna with 500Mt of CO₂ storage space in the Mediterranean Sea. The total cost of infrastructure for the project is Euro350m.

CEO Stefano Venier said "The cement industry will be a central partner in this project. A partnership with Heidelberg will be announced in a few days."
