Cement helps in destruction of seized cocaine
12 January 2023Ecuador: Encapsulation in concrete served to destroy 110t of cocaine in Ecuador during the first nine months of 2022. The figure corresponds to 61% of cocaine seized by authorities during the period. Local press reported that the mixed slurry forms strong precast concrete elements, from which the cocaine is impossible to extract. Encapsulation accelerates destruction of the drug by a factor of 20 compared to incineration, with removal rates of up to 1500kg/hr.
Ecuadorian cocaine seizures at ports alone increased by 42% year-on-year throughout 2022, necessitating the operational improvements in disposal methods.
Fire reported at GICA Group’s Hadjar Soud plant in Algeria
07 December 2022Algeria: A fire has been reported at Groupe des Ciments d'Algéries’ (GICA) Hadjar Soud plant operated by Société des Ciments des Hadjar Soud (SCHS). An explosion occurred whilst narcotics and other substances were being incinerated in the plant’s kiln under the supervision of the Gendarmerie Nationale, according to the Reporters newspaper. 12 people were injured in the incident including five workers at the plant, five police officers and two soldiers. Most of the victims suffered third degree burns in the blast and are being treated locally.
GICA holds the majority stake in SCHS, while Italy-based Buzzi Unicem owns a 35% share.
Cannabis smugglers attempt to hide drugs in cement shipment
20 January 2022Guyana: The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) has confiscated a US$68,300 illegal cannabis shipment from a Panamanian cement carrier ship that was scheduled to depart Port Georgetown on 21 January 2022. CANU says that the value of the substance would have been significantly higher at its destination. It has detained the ship’s captain, engineer and senior officers.
Huaxin Cement burns drugs at Diwei plant
29 June 2020China: Huaxin Cement has announced that it burned 2.7t of seized opiates in its fuel mix at its Diwei cement plant in Chongqing. Representatives of the Chongqing Anti-Drug Committee, Public Service Bureau, Eco-Environmental Bureau and Procuratorate were in attendance. Huaxin Cement reports that the dangerous substances have been “safely disposed of.” The producer said that this is the largest single volume of drugs to have been combusted in a cement kiln. The plant previously burnt 1.22Mt of illicit substances in 2018.
