Zementwerk Hatschek's Gmunden cement plant eliminates 3800t/yr of local CO2 emissions with WHR heating

24 January 2023

Austria: Zementwerk Hatschek's Gmunden cement plant eliminated 3800t of CO2 emissions from its local area during 2022 through its contribution to municipal heating. Zementwerk Hatschek, a subsidiary of Rohrdorfer, heats local households using recovered heat from the Gmunden cement plant's waste heat recover (WHR) system.

A delegation of cement plant representatives and local officials from Baden-Württemberg, Germany, visited the plant to learn about its WHR and heat supply systems on 20 January 2022.

Plant manager Peter Fürhapter said "Municipal heating based on our waste heat contributes to CO2 reduction in Upper Austria, helping us to achieve our CO2 reduction goals under the Paris Climate Agreement." He added "We are pleased that with this forward-looking project we are a model for similar projects in Europe."

Science-Based Targets Initiative validates Cementos Argos’ emissions reduction targets

06 January 2023

Colombia: The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has validated Grupo Argos Subsidiary Cementos Argos’ CO2 emissions reduction goals. Cementos Argos aims to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions in line with a well-below 2°C climate change scenario by 2030. Its strategy includes increasing co-processing of alternative fuel (AF), reducing its cement’s clinker factor, optimising its heat and electricity consumption, investing in cleaner technologies, increasing the share of renewable power it uses and diversifying its product range to include more low-carbon products.

KIMA Process Control to supply kiln cooling system for Cementa's Slite cement plant

17 November 2022

Sweden: Germany-based KIMA Process Control has secured a contract for the supply of a kiln shell cooling system for Cementa's Slite cement plant in Gotland. 88 water jets will deliver centimetre-precision cooling for the 55m-long kiln, while IR pyrometers measure temperatures over areas of 10cm2. According to KIMA Process Control, the equipment can avoid unnecessary cooling of the kiln shell, conserving the heat energy supplied by the main burner.

The new cooling system will eliminate the use of energy intensive electric fans, slashing 1700t/yr in CO2 emissions, according to the supplier. It said that noise emissions will also 'drastically' decline as a result of the upgrade. The system's operating costs are reportedly 98% less than those of the plant's existing fan system.

The supplier said that the new equipment will 'bring the cement plant in Slite an economic benefit in the shortest possible time.' It said "For the cement industry, this project represents a new milestone in terms of best available technology in the operation of rotary kilns."

Kant Cement installs lining on kiln

17 June 2022

Kyrgyzstan: United Cement Group (UCG) subsidiary Kant Cement has begun installation of a lining on its Kant cement plant’s rotary kiln in order to reduce losses and improve the efficiency of the plant. The producer expects the lining to raise its kiln’s temperatures by 100°C. It consists of wear-resistent RMAG–H2 bricks and HALBOR–400 refractory bricks.

UCG said “Energy efficiency and energy saving are among the most important factors for the successful implementation of ongoing economic and social reforms.”

NTU Singapore study develops biocement from sludge and urea

14 June 2022

Signapore: Researchers at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (NTU Singapore) have successfully used bacteria to combine two abundant waste streams into clinker-free biocement. NDTV news has reported that the scientists developed the material from by combining calcium ions with urea in a mixture of industrial carbide sludge and urine. The process takes place at room temperature, reducing CO2 emissions while also offering waste management benefits.

The NTU Singapore team is presently testing the biocement on artificial beaches. It will subsequently investigate other possible large-scale applications around Singapore.

Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies launches H-Iona clinkerless cement on bagged cement market

16 September 2021

France: Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies has launched H-Iona clinkerless cement, its first cement to be made available to retail customers in bagged form. Dow Jones Institutional News has reported that H-Iona cement production’s CO2 emissions are 150kg/t, according to the producer. It claims that this is just 17% that of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies produces H-Iona, primarily from ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and gypsum, heat-free at its fully automated Bournezeau plant.

Co-founder Julien Blanchard and David Hoffmannsaid "By launching H-Iona, the lowest carbon cement on the European market, Hoffmann Green Cement is following its continuous innovation approach.” They added “This is the first low-carbon cement to have received CE marking. Thanks to this ground breaking technology, we are democratising access to low-carbon cement.”
