Indian startup develops ‘eco-friendly’ cement alternative

India: A Bangalore-based startup formed at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has developed an ‘eco-friendly’ cement alternative using geopolymer technology. The product claims to reduce CO₂ emissions by 21.5kg/m2 of pavers produced compared to ordinary Portland cement, according to The Economic Times. It also claims to eliminate water use and offer a 15-20% cost advantage. The product achieves full strength in just three days, compared to the 28 days required for Portland cement.

Nanjunda Rao, one of four cofounders of Novacret and chief research scientist at IISc, said “The benefits are significant, geopolymer-based materials achieve full strength in just three days in tropical climates like India, compared to the 28 days required for Portland cement.”

Cemex wins Net-Zero Industries award for clinker decarbonisation process

Azerbaijan: Cemex has won the Net-Zero Industries Award for its clinker decarbonisation process using concentrated solar power. The award was presented at COP29 in Baku. Cemex’s solar clinker project is a collaboration with cleantech company Synhelion, which developed the high-temperature solar heat technology it uses. Cemex and Synhelion partnered in 2019 and achieved the first successful production of solar clinker in 2022.

Davide Zampini, vice president of Global R&D at Cemex, said "Together with Synhelion, we are pioneering solar-powered clinker production, a breakthrough process that can contribute to decarbonising cement manufacturing."

UCLA team develops ZeroCAL to cut cement CO₂ emissions

US: Researchers at UCLA's Institute for Carbon Management have developed a new method called ZeroCAL that could eliminate ‘nearly all’ of the carbon dioxide emissions from the process of cement production, according to the UCLA Newsroom. The team created a process using limestone and a water-based solution containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Through membrane nanofiltration and an electrochemical process, they produced calcium hydroxide.

To meet ZeroCAL’s water demand, the team suggests focusing on cement plants near coasts or rivers. The researchers are reportedly working with Ultratech Cement to build a demonstration plant that will produce ‘several’ tonnes of lime per day using the ZeroCAL process. Currently, the process requires more energy than traditional lime production methods, but ongoing research aims to reduce its energy consumption.

Gaurav Sant, director of the Institute and professor at UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, said “The ZeroCAL approach offers an elegant solution to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions associated with the process of cement production. First, it addresses the carbon emissions resulting from limestone’s decomposition while providing clean hydrogen and oxygen to heat the cement kiln. Second, it enables onsite decarbonisation while making use of existing kilns and limestone feedstocks without having to build separate carbon capture and storage facilities.”

India: Shree Cement has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to support startups in India's manufacturing sector. This partnership aligns with the government's ‘Make in India’ vision to encourage domestic manufacturing and build a self-reliant economy. Through this collaboration, startups will gain access to Shree Cement’s industrial expertise, network and resources, which will help them scale their operations and develop solutions. This initiative is expected to create new job opportunities, boost local production and reduce import dependency.

Qatar unveils ‘green’ cement from sewage waste

Qatar: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has organised a symposium to launch a new ‘green’ cement made from sewage waste, with aims to support environmental sustainability and the circular economy in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. The symposium highlighted the role of scientific research in transforming sewage into green cement. The cement is produced by treating sludge, resulting from solid sewage waste by burning, grinding and mixing it with catalysts, then is practically applied in the manufacture of building blocks and foam concrete. The amount of accumulated sewage waste is estimated at about 40,000t/yr, which can be used to produce 40 million bricks or 150,000m3/yr of foam concrete.

Cemex launches new damp-proof cement

Mexico: Cemex has launched a new water-repellent cement under its Vertua brand, which is designed to extend the lifespan of construction projects by addressing humidity issues. The product reportedly does not require dosing and mixes like traditional grey cement. It was introduced on 12 September 2024 at the Construrama Convention in Mexico.

President of Cemex Mexico, Ricardo Naya, said “At Cemex, we have developed a new specialty cement designed to solve one of the main problems that affects almost every construction site: dampness. Our damp-proof cement is a true ‘all-in-one’. In addition to its traditional use, it incorporates water-repellent properties that not only protect structures, but also provide a smoother, more uniform finish.”

GCCA announces new partnerships between cement manufacturers and tech startups

Global: The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has announced new collaborations between global cement manufacturers and technology start-ups, focusing on the development of low carbon concrete. Four start-ups—EnviCore in Canada, Queens Carbon and Chement, both in the US and NeoCrete in New Zealand—were part of the 2023 GCCA Innovandi Open Challenge and have now partnered with cement manufacturers. These partnerships aim to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.

The startups will receive access to industry plants, labs and networks to fast-track their technologies. They will also demonstrate their progress on 6th June 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand, during the GCCA's CEO and Leaders Conference. The association continues its efforts under the 2050 Net Zero Concrete Roadmap, with 29 new start-ups shortlisted this year to work on carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology.

UK startup develops ‘carbon-negative’ cement using olivine

UK: Seratech has developed a process using olivine, a mineral abundant in Earth's mantle, to produce ‘carbon-negative’ cement. The company's method involves replacing some of the clinker with silica extracted from olivine. Magnesium sulphate derived from the olivine reacts with CO₂ to form nesquehonite, a mineral that sequesters CO₂. This method uses CO₂ captured from emissions sources or directly from the air.

Sam Draper, CEO, explained the process: “The researchers extracted these compounds by dissolving powdered olivine in sulphuric acid. After separating the silica and magnesium sulphate, they bubbled CO₂ through the magnesium slurry to form nesquehonite.”

According to Draper, replacing 35% of regular cement with this silica would yield carbon-neutral results, while a 40% substitution could achieve carbon negativity. Current building standards allow up to 55% of cement to be replaced by this material, although robust testing has yet to be conducted.

Global tech start-ups join GCCA challenge to decarbonise cement and concrete

Global: The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has received nearly 100 applications from worldwide tech start-ups for its Innovandi Open Challenge, which targets the decarbonisation of cement and concrete. This year's challenge is centred on carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technologies.

Thomas Guillot, GCCA’s Chief Executive, said "There are already more than 100 CCUS cement industry pilots, projects and announcements in the pipeline across the world – with the world’s first commercial scale carbon capture and storage plant set to complete later this year. Innovation will help our industry to deploy this technology further and faster."

Claude Loréa, GCCA’s Cement, Innovation and ESG Director, said "It’s really encouraging to see nearly 100 applications for our Innovandi Open Challenge and from all parts of the world. As well as the US, UK and India, we’ve received applications from China, Greece and Australia for the first time. It demonstrates the high level of interest in working with our industry to make cement and concrete net zero. We’re looking forward to assessing all the applications, in detail."

The association, alongside over 50 experts from member companies, will now review and shortlist the most deployable technologies, offering shortlisted start-ups access to key industry resources and networks.

Chalmers University develops sustainable textile-reinforced concrete

Sweden: Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, have developed a method to simplify the construction of textile-reinforced concrete structures, a move that is expected to lead to more environmentally friendly infrastructure like bridges, tunnels, and buildings. The new technique addresses the high carbon footprint of cement.

This innovation, involving carbon fibre textiles as a replacement for steel reinforcement, enables lighter structures with reduced cement usage, thereby lowering the overall carbon impact. Karin Lundgren, Professor of Concrete Structures at Chalmers Department of Architecture said "A great deal of the concrete we use today has the function to act as a protective layer to prevent the steel reinforcement from corroding. If we can use textile reinforcement instead, we can reduce cement consumption and also use less concrete, thus reducing the climate impact."

The research is detailed in a paper titled 'Textile reinforced concrete members subjected to tension, bending, and in-plane loads: Experimental study and numerical analyses', which was published in the Construction and Building Materials journal. The study, a collaborative effort between Chalmers University and Gdansk University of Technology in Poland, is supported by the Swedish Research Council.
