Japan: Taiheiyo Cement has set out the measures by which it aims to achieve its July 2019 target to ‘reduce net CO₂ emissions per unit of cement production’ by 80% between 2000 and 2050. The measures consist of: the introduction of energy-saving equipment, the promotion of alternative fuels (AFs) and the development of lower-CO₂ cements, accounting for a minimum 15% reduction; development and introduction of new technologies to the production process, targeting especially indirect emissions by modernising energy sources, accounting for a minimum 15% reduction; assumption of future technologies, accounting for a minimum 50% reduction.

France: Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies and Bouygues Construction have signed a 30-month initial technical and commercial collaboration agreement to develop and test concrete formulations using new cement made from Hoffmann’s H-EVA technology. Hoffmann Green Cement inaugurated its pilot plant at Bournezeau, Vendée in late 2018. The unit will manufacture cement products using flash-calcined metakaolin and blast-furnace slag. Bouygues Construction is a global construction company with a presence in over 60 countries.

Australia: Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE) and the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) are working together to encourage the use of low carbon cements in infrastructure projects. This follows ISCA’s Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating scheme and the release of the BZE Rethinking Cement report that presents a roadmap on how Australia could develop the world’s first zero carbon cement industry.

ISCA’s Infrastructure Sustainability Rating scheme will introduce two new incentives aligned with BZE’s approach: a new Innovation Challenge will encourage greater use of low-carbon content within Portland cement; and an updated Infrastructure Sustainability Materials Calculator for ISv2.0 will award points for the use of geopolymers. ISCA already rewards projects for replacing a proportion of Portland cement clinker with alternatives such as fly ash. Their analysis indicates that IS rated projects have achieved an average of 21 - 25% Portland replacement.
