India: Birla Corporation won bidding for Madhya Pradesh's Marki Barka coal mines on 15 October 2022. The producer said that the asset will provide fuel security and cost optimisation for its cement operations.

JSW Cement to acquire Springway Mining for US$57.9m

11 October 2022

India: India Cements has agreed to sell Springway Mining to JSW Cement for US$57.9m. Springway Mining is currently building an integrated cement plant in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh, with dedicated limestone reserves in nearby Panna.

India Cements has received US$45.4m-worth of its payment for the business, and expect to receive the outstanding US$12.5m by 31 December 2022.

JSW Cement to acquire some India Cements assets

10 October 2022

India: JSW Cement is 'closing in' on an acquisition of some of India Cements' assets in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Business Standard newspaper has reported that JSW Cement beat an offer by UltraTech Cement for the Rajasthan assets.

India Cements began construction of a new 3Mt/yr cement plant with a dedicated limestone mine in Madhya Pradesh in 2022. In May 2022, it announced that it was contemplating a land sale in order to reduce its debt. India Cements ended the 2022 financial year with debt of US$369m, up by 1.4% year-on-year from US$364m at the close of the 2021 financial year.

UltraTech Cement to acquire India Cements’ Pawai limestone mine

India: UltraTech Cement and India Cements are reportedly poised to conclude a deal for the acquisition of the latter’s 185ha Pawai limestone mine in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, by Mumbai-based UltraTech Cement. Marketline News has reported that the Aditya Birla subsidiary expects to pay US$98m for the asset.

Boulder County Planning Commission recommends rejection of Cemex USA’s Dowe Flats mine licence extension application

02 September 2022

US: The Boulder County Planning Commission has recommended that county commissioners should reject Cemex USA’s application to extend its licence to mine limestone at its Dowe Flats quarry until 2037. Local press has reported that Cemex USA previously agreed to shut down its Lyons cement plant at the expiry of its extended licence in 2037. The company says that it will be able to continue operating the plant without use of the mine.

Cemex USA executive vice president Trpimir Renic said "We do always try and consume the raw materials that are available to us at the existing site where we are currently operating. We think that operating that quarry for the next 15 years - supplying Lyons cement plant - is the most responsible resource management operation that we can undertake."

Jaypee Cement loses government guarantee for coal mine loan

26 July 2022

India: The Indian Coal Ministry has deducted Jaypee Cement’s bank guarantee for a lease for a planned coal mine. The Hindu newspaper has reported that the project is among 44 others penalised for delays in operation or missing production targets. UltraTech Cement also received a show cause notice regarding adherence to its timeline at one of its coal blocks.

Kant Cement begins development of new limestone mine

18 July 2022

Kyrgyzstan: Kant Cement has begun excavating the Severnaya Gryada limestone deposit near to its Kant cement plant. The producer says that the limestone has a higher purity than that from its existing Agalatas mine. It therefore expects the Kant plant to reduce its raw materials consumption and eliminate a part of its dust emissions. Kant Cement currently replaces a part of the limestone in the plant’s cement production with 65,000t/yr of fly ash.

UltraTech Cement wins Five Star mine management ratings

India: The Indian Ministry of Mines and Indian Bureau of Mines have awarded UltraTech Cement Five Star ratings for 10 limestone mines across India. Assessment took place within the Indian mining Sustainable Development Framework, which quantifies sustainability, efficiency, land use and resettlement, besides other social impacts.

Popular Cement Industries wins Sindh mine case

08 July 2022

Pakistan: Popular Cement Industries has won a court case against Gatron Group, which the cement company claimed was intruding upon a mine held under lease by it. The Business Recorder newspaper has reported that Gatron Group began construction of a partition wall across the mine. The judge ruled that Popular Cement Industries inherited its lease from Dadabhoy Cement in 1986.

Xinjiang Tianshan Cement to invest US$300m in Chizhou CNBM New Materials

China: Xinjiang Tianshan Cement has announced plans to invest US$300m into its new materials subsidiary Chizhou CNBM New Materials. The company says that it has increased its planned investments in its Hengshan limestone mine project by 15% to US$1.58bn from US$1.37bn.
