Holcim Costa Rica receives Positive Packaging certificate

13 January 2022

Costa Rica: Société Générale de Surveillance has awarded Holcim Costa Rica its Positive Packaging certificate for 100% packaging energy recovery in 2021. The company offset the 1500t carbon footprint of its packaging production for the year by sorting and co-processing 14,000t of paper as fuel. It sourced the paper from its customer cement bag return scheme and through municipal recycling services run by fellow Holcim subsidiary Geocycle Costa Rica.

Holcim Costa Rica sustainability coordinator Catalina Mora said “Waste management is a global challenge, so this project has a direct impact on our contribution as a company to the vision of sustainability for the country.”

UK cement shortage leads Hanson to reduce bagged cement allocations

26 May 2021

UK: Hanson, part of Germany-based HeidelbergCement, has reduced its bagged cement allocations to customers. The Construction Index has reported that the decision is due to a national shortage of cement in the UK. The building materials producer introduced a packed cement allocation in May 2021. It calculated these by the proportion of orders that it believed could fulfil. Packed products director Andrew Simpson said, “Regrettably, we have been unable to maintain those levels.” He added that the company had had to perform unforeseen work on its cement operations following its 2021 shutdown.

Supply issues for packaging materials have also been reported. Bag suppliers informed Hanson to expect longer-term packaging shortages due to global demand for polymer and kraft paper, according to Simpson. He added that low pallet availability was also a concern.

BillerudKorsnäs and Haver & Boecker to further develop sack packaging standards

19 May 2021

Germany/Sweden: Sweden-based BillerudKorsnäs and Germany-based Haver & Boecker have decided to continue jointly developing further standards for sack packaging following positive feedback in 2020. The sack packaging norms include recommendations for the development and use of packaging solutions and processes and define basic standard know-how or standard procedures. They are intended to provide orientation for regular questions that manufacturers of bulk materials face.

"Together BillerudKorsnäs and Haver & Boecker now offer a set of recommendations to minimise problems and maximise performance in the packaging chain. If manufacturers and users of paper sack packaging follow the recommendations and guidelines and implement usage of these norms in their supply chain, efficient and effective packaging production, filling, handling, storage and transport of the end products will be ensured," says Mikael Peterson, Technical Service Director at BillerudKorsnäs.

BillerudKorsnäs has contributed experience in packaging paper production as well as analytical tests, design and developments at the BillerudKorsnäs Packaging Development Centre. Haver & Boecker has contributed its experience in filling technology and handling of powdered bulk materials.
