Indian cement producers hit by rise in import duty on petcoke
19 December 2017India: The government has raised the import duty on petcoke to 10% from 2.5%. This follows the abolition of a ban on petcoke and furnace oil to the cement and power industries in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh by the Supreme Court, according to Reuters. The increase in import duty is expected to create a rise in coal imports as companies change their energy mix. Shree Cement, JK Cement, J K Lakshmi Cement, UltraTech Cement and Mangalam Cement are all expected to be particularly affected by the tariff change. India is the world’s biggest consumer of petcoke, with much of it imported from refineries in the US.
Penna Cement orders mill from Loesche
19 December 2017India: Penna Cement has ordered a vertical roller mill from Loesche for its cement plant at Boyareddypalli in Andhra Pradesh. The mill will be equipped with four rollers to grind petcoke with a throughput capacity of 52t/hr, 3% R on 90μm. The delivery of the order to be managed by Loesche India and is scheduled to take place at the start of 2018. No value for the order has been disclosed. The mill upgrade will increase the plant’s cement production capacity to 4.6Mt/yr from 2Mt/yr.
Supreme Court lifts ban on petcoke and furnace oil by cement industry in northern states of India
14 December 2017India: The Supreme Court has lifted a ban on petcoke and furnace oil to the cement and power industries in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The court also directed the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) to set regulations for the sale of petcoke and fix emission standards for thermal power plants, according to the Indo-Asian News Service agency. Representatives of the cement industry have welcomed the ruling. The Central Pollution Control Board and the MEF issued the ban following a directive from the Supreme Court in late October 2017 prohibiting industries in the three neighbouring states of Delhi from using the polluting fuels.
Indian ministry considers exemption for cement plants from petcoke and furnace oil ban
05 December 2017India: The Ministry of Environment and Forest (MEF) is considering exempting cement plants and power companies from a ban on using petcoke and furnace oil for industrial use in Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Additional solicitor general A Nadkarni informed the Supreme Court that the use of petcoke in the cement industry was ‘minuscule,’ for non-fuel purposes and that it is used for de-sulphuring, according to the Hindustan Times. However, the exemption, if granted, will only be allowed for one year to allow cement companies to switch to alternative fuels.
The Central Pollution Control Board and the MEF issued the ban following a directive from the Supreme Court in late October 2017 prohibiting industries in the three neighbouring states of Delhi from using the polluting fuels. Use of petcoke and furnace oil is already banned in the capital region. The ban was imposed following high pollution levels in Delhi.
Aunde orders four mills from Loesche
21 August 2017Turkey: Germany’s Aunde has ordered four vertical roller mills from Loesche for a new cement plant being built in Soma. The order includes one 350t/hr raw material mill, one 30t/hr coal or 27t/hr petcoke mill and two 150t/hr clinker or granulated blast furnace slag mills. The scope of delivery also includes additional components such as water injection, cyclones, slide gates and rotary feeders as well as a spare parts package for the next two years.
Spain: Cementos Cosmos has stopped exports from its Niebla cement plant due to an increase in the price of petcoke. The subsidiary of Brazil’s Votorantim has also implemented a Temporary Regulation of Employment from June 2017 to May 2018 that will enable it to suspend workers or reduce working hours, according to the Huelva Información newspaper. The cement producer says it is waiting for planning permission to install a dosing system for waste fuels that will cut it fuel bill. However, the local community has opposed attempts to use alternative waste fuels previously.
Sumitomo Osaka Cement consumed 1.41Mt of coal in financial year 2015

Arabian Cement to build US$9m petcoke mill
16 August 2016Egypt: Arabian Cement plans to build a US$9m petcoke mill for its cement plant. It is preparing all the necessary legal and financial requirements for the project. The new mill will help the cement plant reduce its operating costs.
