27 March 2025

Iraq: Gebr. Pfeiffer has won an order to supply a vertical roller mill for the Al Amir cement plant in Najaf. The MVR 5000 R-4 raw mill with SLS 4500 VR classifier will grind 500t/hr of cement raw material from a fineness of 10% R to 0.090mm, drying it from 12% to below 0.5% moisture. The mill will be delivered via China-based contractor Sinoma Suzhou. Commissioning is scheduled for the second half of 2026.

Heidelberg Materials orders MVR mill from Gebr. Pfeiffer

13 March 2025

France: Heidelberg Materials has ordered an MVR 5000 C-4 vertical roller mill from Gebr. Pfeiffer for its Airvault plant to grind ultra-fine Portland cement. The mill will be equipped with an SLS 4500 VC classifier to produce 145t/hr of Portland cement at a fineness of 4500cm²/g. The design allows for high-efficiency grinding and lower CO₂ emissions by reducing clinker content in blended cements. The contract is managed by China-based contractor CBMI. Commissioning is expected in the first half of 2026.

Gebr. Pfeiffer to supply vertical roller mill for Holcim's Obourg plant

21 February 2025

Belgium: Gebr. Pfeiffer has received an order for an MVR 5000 R-4 vertical roller mill. The mill is intended for a new 4800t/day line at Holcim Belgique's Obourg cement plant, the site of the GO4ZERO decarbonisation project.

The mill will grind 370t/hr of cement raw material to a fineness of ≤15%R to 0.090mm and reduce moisture content from 4% to <0.7%. The mill is expected to reduce both emissions and specific operating costs.

Chinese contractor CBMI is managing the installation, with commissioning planned for the second half of 2025. The mill will be integrated into the plant's oxyfuel operations to achieve efficiency in the CO2 capture process.

UltraTech Cement expands with Gebr. Pfeiffer technology

16 April 2024

India: UltraTech Cement will integrate vertical mill technology from Gebr. Pfeiffer for three new clinker production lines. Gebr. Pfeiffer SE and its Indian subsidiary, Gebr. Pfeiffer India, will fulfil a subsequent order.

At the Happy 3 plant, cement raw material grinding will be conducted using an MVR 5000 R-4 mill, equipped with a 5300kW drive, capable of grinding about 705t/hr to a product fineness of 1.5% R 212µm. Additionally, three MPS 3550 BK mills, each with a 1300kW gearbox, will grind about 45t/hr of petcoke or 90t/hr of coal. These mills come with an integrated SLS 3750 BK classifier.

Gebr. Pfeiffer's MVR mills are distinct in their use of rollers according to the R=C principle. This design allows the same rollers to be used with parts for both raw meal and cement grinding. The MVR 5000 R-4 mill at Happy 3 features four actively redundant rollers, maintaining about 70% production capacity during maintenance. Gebr. Pfeiffer equips MVR mills with maintenance-oriented condition monitoring systems, enabling the implementation of digital maintenance strategies.

Handling of the order will be a collaborative effort between Gebr. Pfeiffer SE and Gebr. Pfeiffer India with all customer support and plant planning managed by Pfeiffer engineers in Noida. Core components like gearboxes, grinding bowls and roller suspensions will be shipped from Europe, while other parts like foundations and classifiers will be provided by the Indian subsidiary. Support for the plants will be managed by the customer support centre in Noida, accessible via remote data or on-site personnel.

Holcim US to invest US$100m in Ste. Genevieve cement plant expansion

30 October 2023

US: Holcim US will invest US$100m in an expansion to raise its Ste. Genevieve cement plant’s capacity by 15% to 4.6Mt/yr. The expansion will involve the installation of a fifth vertical roller mill (VRM) for cement grinding and a new mineral component addition system, alongside a rail-loadout expansion. The producer says that the expanded plant will have lower net CO2 emissions than before. Construction is set to commence in 2024.

Toufic Tabbara, head of Holcim’s North America region, said “With an emphasis on achieving the highest levels of environmental performance and operational efficiency, Ste. Genevieve has been the leader in US cement manufacturing since it was built in 2009. This investment will ensure we maintain that leadership in supporting the sustainable growth of our nation’s infrastructure and residential construction while accelerating net carbon reduction across the built environment.”

President launches vertical roller mill at Tororo Cement

25 September 2023

Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially commissioned a new vertical roller mill at Tororo Cement’s plant in Tororo. The German-built mill cost US$25m and can produce 150t/hr of cement. The operator claims it to be the ‘most sophisticated’ in East and Central Africa. It is in the process of installing an additional 300t/hr mill, to bring its overall grinding capacity to 5Mt/yr. It is also planning the construction of a 5000t/yr integrated plant in Moroto, to eliminate the company’s need for imported clinker, which it claims will be launched within the next five years.

Speaking at the event, Museveni congratulated Tororo Cement’s chair Hasmukh Kanji Patel for the company’s ‘enormous contribution to Uganda’ and called for Ugandans to support foreign-owned companies, as they support national development, pay local taxes and contribute to gross domestic product. He said "I'm very glad that Mr Patel came here, that we privatised a government factory and now he has expanded it. This is why we had to go against people like Idi Amin who were ignorant. Ugandans should stop saying ‘Indian factory.’ This this is not an ‘Indian factory,’ it is a Ugandan factory regardless of who has built it.”
