Al-Ahlia Cement Company to expand Lebda cement plant

Libya: Al-Ahlia Cement Company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China National Building Material (CNBM) subsidiary Sinoma CDI to collaborate on the construction of a new 6600t/day production line at its Lebda Cement Factory in Tripolitania. The expansion is expected to more than triple the Lebda cement plant’s capacity to 3.4Mt/yr.

Indian cement industry to invest US$15bn in capital expenditure

India: India’s top cement producers are planning to invest approximately US$15bn from 2025 - 2027 in capital expenditure, according to a report by ratings agency CRISIL. During this period, the industry is expected to expand cement grinding capacity by 130Mt/yr, which represents a fifth of the current capacity. This move is prompted by robust demand and competitive market share goals, reports the Economic Times.

Senior director and deputy chief ratings officer at CRISIL Ratings, Manish Gupta, said "Cement demand outlook remains healthy with a compound annual growth rate of 7% over the financial years 2025-2029. The surge in capital expenditure over the next three financial years will primarily cater to this growing demand as well as to the aspirations of the cement makers to improve their national presence."

Cemento Cruz Azul to build new grinding mill at Lagunas cement plant

Mexico: Cemento Cruz Azul will invest nearly US$40m to build a new grinding mill at its Lagunas cement plant in Oaxaca to increase cement production capacity. General manager  Mario Morán said that construction will be completed by October 2025.

Víctor Velázquez, chair of the board of directors, said "The mill is designed to be highly energy efficient and environmentally friendly, as it does not use water."

JSW Cement to double cement grinding capacity

21 August 2024

India: JSW Cement plans to more than double its cement grinding capacity from 20.6Mt/yr to nearly 41Mt/yr. The expansion involves six new greenfield units in Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Maharashtra, and a brownfield unit in Vijayanagar; Karnataka, adding 20.25Mt/yr. The company also aims to increase its clinker production capacity from 6.44Mt/yr to 13.04Mt/yr. The new facilities in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will each contribute 3.3Mt/yr to this expansion. In its offer document, JSW Cement stated that it sees potential in ‘green’ cement products like ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and plans to expand its presence in northern and central India.

Cementos Argos supplies for Disney Cruise Line's new pier in the Bahamas

Bahamas: Cementos Argos has supplied nearly 10,000t of cement, accounting for 85% of the total required for the construction of Disney Cruise Line's new 700m-long pier at Lighthouse Point on Eleuthera Island. The project cost US$250m and is part of expansion plans to accommodate over one million visitors annually. Cement was sourced through the company’s exports from Puerto Rico between 2022 and 2024.

Shera's new fibre cement plant in Pampanga set for 2025 launch

Philippines: Thailand-based producer Shera announced that its upcoming fibre cement plant in Mabalacat, Pampanga, has reached 60% completion and is on schedule to commence commercial operations by January 2025. The plant will be the company’s first production facility outside Thailand, capable of producing 0.24Mt/yr of fibre cement. The Mabalacat facility will also export to Taiwan, South Korea and parts of North Asia and Oceania and will create jobs for up to 150 people.

Ongek Taechamahaphant, chair and director, said “Our Mabalacat plant is a major step in Shera’s plan to expand further in the Philippine market. We know that once this facility is fully operational by 2025, more Filipinos will easily be able to access our eco-friendly and durable fibre cement products.”

Foundation stone laid for new CIMAF calcined clay unit and solar power plant

Burkina Faso: The stone laying ceremony took place on Thursday 8 August 2024 at Ciments de l'Afrique’s (CIMAF) new calcined clay production unit and solar power plant at its plant in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The calcined clay unit is valued at US$50m, while the solar power plant cost US$5.5m, reports Burkina 24. Completion is expected by August 2026.

Ibrahim Traore, president of Burkina Faso, said “The accompanying solar unit should make it possible to reduce production costs and we hope that in a few years, this technology will become popular and will make it possible to reduce cement costs.”

Anas Sefrioui, chair and CEO of CIMAF Group, said “The calcined clay that we will produce here in Burkina will serve as an alternative raw material to imported materials, particularly clinker.”

Ambuja Cements to build new grinding unit in Bihar

India: Ambuja Cements will invest US$190m to establish a 6Mt/yr grinding plant in Warisaliganj, Bihar. The project is scheduled in three phases, with the first phase of 2.4Mt/yr costing US$131m, according to the company. The plant has secured environmental clearance and land allocation for potential future expansions, The Telegraph India reports. The project will reportedly create 250 direct jobs and 1000 indirect jobs and will contribute US$30m/yr to Bihar’s economy. It is targeted for completion by December 2025.

Pranav Adani, director of Adani Enterprises, said “This investment aligns with the state government’s development programmes and our growth plans. The cement industry is witnessing healthy volumes due to the government’s infrastructure thrust, and Ambuja Cements is well positioned to support sustainable infrastructure development in the country.”

Environmental concerns raised over Duyen Ha’s Diep cement plant expansion

Vietnam: The Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has expressed environmental concerns about Duyen Ha's plan to convert 423,000m2 of forest and and agricultural land into a quarry for its expansion of its Diep cement plant in Ninh Binh province. The expansion will increase limestone supply for a second production line at the plant, Vietnam News has reported. According to an environmental impact assessment report, the expansion will affect 382,000m² of forest and 41,000m² of agricultural land. The total project area will eventually reach 988,000m², capable of producing 2Mt/yr of limestone. The total investment is valued at US$8.8m.

Ghori Cement production set to rise in Baghlan

23 July 2024

Afghanistan: The Ghori Cement plant in Baghlan province plans to increase its production from 0.18Mt in 2023 to 0.2Mt in 2024 due to a growing demand for cement. Technical deputy of the factory, Sarbaz Banuzai, also revealed plans for a new cement plant capable of producing 1.3Mt/yr, which would stand adjacent to the current facility.

Factory workers voiced support for the expansion as a means to combat unemployment and boost local production.
