Cement plant coats town in dust
09 September 2019Spain: The residents’ association of San Diego, Galicia, has filed a complaint to the Port of A Coruña over a discharge of cement dust from Cementos Cosmos’ 0.7Mt/yr Niebla plant. La Voz de Galicia has reported that the emission was the result of a broken pipe. Cementos Cosmos, a subsidiary of Votorantim, says that it detected the malfunction instantly, and resolved it within three minutes.
Mexico: Holcim Mexico has won an award from the National Chamber of Cement (CANACEM) for reporting no accidents at its cement plants in 2018. The award was presented at CANACEM‘s XXXVI National Congress of Occupational Health and Safety in Chihuahua.
Silo fault spills 250t of cement at INC Villeta plant
04 December 2018Paraguay: A fault in a storage silo has spilled around 250t of cement at Industria Nacional del Cemento’s (INC) plant. The silo was reportedly closed for maintenance at the time, according to the ABC – Paraguay newspaper. The material is unrecoverable and its value was around US$0.1m. The mistake follows similar spills at other silos at the state-owned plant. Other maintenance issues have also been reported at the site.
Cement carrier runs aground in Iceland
06 November 2018Iceland: Cement carrier Fjordvik has run aground near the port of Helguvík harbour in Keflavík. It ran aground whilst being piloting into the harbour, according to state broadcaster RÚV. The hull of the vessel has been breached. The crew were evacuated by helicopter. The ship was travelling from Aalborg in Denmark.
Clinker transport sinks in Bay of Bengal
12 September 2018Bangladesh: A lighter vessel carrying around 1500t of clinker has capsized near Bhasanchar of Noakhali in the Bay of Bengal. Mohammed Selim, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Chittagong said that all the 13 crew members of MV Sheikh Parvin were rescued, according to the Daily Star newspaper.
Two workers killed at Schelklingen cement plant
10 September 2018Germany: Two workers have in died an accident at a construction site within the HeidelbergCement Schelklingen cement plant, when a 40m-high scaffold collapsed within a silo. Four others were involved, with one slightly injured. All six operatives had entered the silo from the top. Spokesperson Elke Schönig said that the scaffolding had become ‘staggered’ for unknown reasons and then partially collapsed. The incident will be investigated.
Qatar: Alkhalij Cement, a subsidiary of Qatari Investors Group, has reached three years or 3.5 million hours without accidents, at its plant in Umm Bab. The company said that achievement showed that its employees had followed safety rules with dedication and reliability, according to the Qatar Tribune newspaper. Alkhalij Cement operates an integrated plant with a clinker production capacity of 6000t/day.
Belarus: A worker has been killed in an accident at the Krasnaselskbudmateryyaly cement plant in Vawkavysk. The 32 year old contractor was cleaning a heat exchanger in a storage facility when a layer of cement fell on him and a co-worker, according to the Belarusian Private News Agency. The man died at the scene from asphyxia. His colleague was taken to hospital with injuries. An investigation into the incident has started.
Clinker ship sinks on river in Bangladesh
20 March 2018Bangladesh: A cargo vessel carrying 1035t of clinker has sunk on the Rupsha River. Local police said that water started to enter the ship, MV-BB 134, whilst in the middle of the river when a crack opened in its hull, according to the United News of Bangladesh news agency. The vessel sank within an hour. No casualties have been reported.
Four workers die at Zhongda cement plant
21 March 2017China: Four workers have died when the roof of a shed collapsed at the Zhongda cement plant in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province. Three workers died at the scene and another died in hospital, according to the Xinhua News Agency. An investigation is currently underway.
