Cahya Mata Sarawak to expand Kuching cement plant
21 November 2023Malaysia: Cahya Mata Sarawak has appointed China-based Sinoma Industry Engineering to provide technical consultancy services for an expansion and upgrade at its Kuching cement plant. Bernama Daily Malaysian News has reported that Sinoma Industry Engineering will help the producer to upgrade the plant’s 1Mt/yr Line 1 and build its planned 1.9Mt/yr Line 2.
Malaysia: Cahya Mata Sarawak subsidiary CMS Cement has secured board approval to build a new 1.9Mt/yr clinker line at its Kuching cement plant at Jalan Mambong. This will more than triple its clinker capacity to 2.8Mt/yr. The Star newspaper has reported that construction will continue for 36 months from the date of groundbreaking. CMS Cement expects to invest US$161m in the project.
The Kuching cement plant is reportedly operating at 55% utilisation of its 2.75Mt/yr cement capacity. It currently relies on 40% of its own clinker to produce cement, with 60% of clinker imported. It aims to achieve clinker self-sufficiency to better serve growing markets in Sarawak and elsewhere, including Malaysia’s upcoming new capital city, Nusantara, on the opposite side of Borneo.
Malaysia: The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) are planning to set up a joint-venture tasked with imported cement into Sarawak due to shortages and high prices. The company intends to import 0.5 – 1Mt/yr of cement from Siam Cement Group (SCG) in Thailand, according to the Star newspaper. Representatives of the SEDC and BDA recently visited SCG in Bangkok.
Cement prices in Sarawk are reportedly 15% higher than in mainland Malaysia and 4% higher than neighbouring Sabah. Supply and pricing issues have adversely affected infrastructure projects in the state. Maintenance at CMS Cement’s integrated Mambong plant south of Kuching and delays in delivering raw materials to its grinding plant at Kuching grinding plant caused further disruptions to cement supplies in late 2022.
Cement shortage reported in Sarawak
17 November 2021Malaysia: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs has blamed a shortage of cement in the state of Sarawak, Borneo on high demand and a lack of shipping. State director Datuk Stanley Tan noted that many major construction projects had restarted work in 2021 following disruption caused by the nationwide movement control orders (MCO) caused by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, according to the Malay Mail newspaper. He added that imports of raw materials for cement production had also been affected due to the limited number of ships that could cross the South China Sea.
The local government plans to work with local producer Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (CMS) on solving the problem. Together they hope to end the shortage of cement by December 2021.
Cahya Mata Sarawak’s first half profit down by 37.1%
29 August 2019Malaysia: Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS)’s cement division has reported a net profit of US$19.5m in the six months to 30 June 2019, down by 37.1% from US$31.0m in the same period of 2018. The company’s total first half revenue rose by 8.9% to US$194m from US$178m in 2018.
In its financial statement, CMS blamed the cement profit slump on rising clinker import prices and the cost of fuel for its coal-fired cement plants. CEO Datuk Isaac Lugun has expressed hope for the group’s longer-term prospects due to its competitive power pricing and strong global presence.
Update on Malaysia
26 June 2019The Malaysian Competition Commission took the rather ominous step this week of saying it was taking extra care to watch the cement industry. Ouch! It said that had taken note of recent price rises by both cement and concrete producers and that it was working with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs as it met with the sector. It also said it was well aware of the recent merger between YTL and Lafarge, “...which had led to the market being more concentrated at the upstream and downstream level.”
The background here is that at least one unnamed cement producer announced a price hike of 40% in mid-June 2019. End-users panicked and the local press took up the story. The Cement and Concrete Association of Malaysia then defended price rises in general, when it was asked for comment, due to all sorts of mounting input costs. Although, to be fair, to the association the Malaysian Competition Commission acknowledged the price pressures the industry was under due to input costs in a report it issued in 2017.
Back in the present, the government became involved and Saifuddin Nasution Ismai, the head of the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, calmed the situation down by saying that producers had agreed not to raise their prices after all and that any future planned price adjustments would be ‘discussed’ with the authorities first. Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng then followed this up with calls for an investigation into prices in Sarawak state in Eastern Malaysia. In response, Suhadi Sulaiman, the chief executive officer (CEO) of CMS Cement, batted this straight back by blaming industry mergers in Peninsular Malaysia and saying the company had no plans ‘anytime soon’ to raise its prices.
As the Malaysian Competition Commission kindly pointed out, this entire furore took place about a month on from the competition of LafargeHolcim’s divestment of its local subsidiary to YTL. The commission agreed to the acquisition of Lafarge Malaysia by YTL knowing that it was giving YTL ownership of over half of the country’s production capacity. With this in mind it is unsurprising that the commission might have wanted to look tough in the face of even a whiff of market impropriety, whether it was real or not.
The problem, as the Malaysian Competition Commission alluded to in its statement, is that the local industry suffers from production overcapacity. On top of this local demand has been contracting since 2015. The country has 11 integrated cement plants with a production capacity of 27.1Mt/yr, according to Global Cement Directory 2019 data. Production hit a high of 24.7Mt in 2015 and then fell year-on-year to 18.8Mt in 2017. Data from the Cement and Concrete Association of Malaysia painted a worse picture taking into account both integrated and grinding capacity reporting an estimated production capacity utilisation rate of just 59% in 2016. Lafarge Malaysia reported a loss before tax of US$97.7m at the end of 2018 as well as declining revenue. Shortly thereafter it announced it was leaving the country, as well as neighbouring Singapore.
In theory the buyout by YTL should have been one step closer to solving Malaysia’s overcapacity woes as either it gained synergies through merging the companies or shut down some of its plants. Certainly, the system appears to be working at some level, as the proposed 40% price rise hasn’t happened. Yet, if the government is reacting to voters rather than the market it could prolong the capacity-demand gap indefinitely. Under these conditions LafargeHolcim’s decision to exit South-East Asia may prove prescient.
CMS Cement not planning to raise prices
26 June 2019Malaysia: Suhadi Sulaiman, the chief executive officer (CEO) of CMS Cement, says that the company does not intend to increase its prices ‘anytime soon.’ He said that any potential enquiry into a differene in prices between Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak would show that the cement producer had not riased its prices since early 2016, according to the Borneo Post newspaper. He made the comments in a reponse to a call by the Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng for such an enquiry.
“We welcome the enquiry for two reasons... Firstly, it will show that the disparity in prices is purely due to the recent aggressive price war, which led to industry mergers and acquisitions in Peninsular Malaysia,” said Suhadi. “Secondly, an enquiry of this nature will also serve to show once and for all that Sarawak is not, and never has been, a cement monopoly.”
Lim said previously that an investigation was necessary to determine whether cartel-like behaviour was responsible for higher cement prices in Sarawak. He noted that the price was ‘significantly’ higher in the state than in Peninsular Malaysia.
CMS profit increases in third quarter
30 November 2017Malaysia: Cahya Mata Sarawak’s (CMS) pre-tax profit rose to US$23.4m for the third quarter of 2017 from US$23.1m in the same quarter of 2016. The group said the better profit before tax was attributable to the cement division’s lower production costs. Its revenue, however, declined to US$85.0m from US$87.0m a year earlier. CMS said that the cement division’s clinker and cement operations’ combined profit before tax for the third quarter was 2% ahead of the corresponding quarter of 2016.
The company said that the operating environment was expected to remain challenging and the group’s healthy financial position would help weather the challenging environment. “We remain focused on growing our portfolio of businesses by taking advantage of the business opportunities in Sarawak,” said the company in a statement. “Our strong fundamentals and resilience will enable us to perform and to deliver a satisfactory financial performance for 2017. Coupled with other measures that the management is taking, we are positioning for long-term sustainable revenue and profitability growth.”
Malaysian cement producers cope with a currency slide
28 October 2015A common refrain in the notes accompanying multinational corporate balance sheets are the adverse effects of currency exchange rates. So it goes this week with separate complaints from the Cement and Concrete Association of Malaysia and ARM Cement in Kenya. In Malaysia its local currency, the Ringgit, has fallen in value by 24% against the US Dollar since January 2015. The fall has been blamed on low prices for crude oil and for other commodities such as palm oil.
For the cement industry this is creating problems due to imported key inputs such as a coal and gypsum that are paid for in US Dollars. Similarly, clinker imports have risen by 20% as part of the same effect. The government hopes that infrastructure projects will prop up the construction sector for the time being. Local market leader Lafarge Malaysia has concurred with this cautiously. However, it is right to be realistic about the situation, as the problems with the falling value of the Ringgit seem to be reflected in its financial results.
Lafarge Malaysia has seen its revenue fall by 2.5% year-on-year to US$318m for the first six months of 2015 from US$326m for the same period in 2014. Net profit has fallen by 9% to US$32m. This follows a 3.8% year-on-year fall to US$640m for 2014 as a whole compared to US$666m in 2013. The drop in revenue was partly blamed on lower cement prices, aggravated by higher operating costs arising mainly from the increase in input and delivery costs. It also fits with the start of the fall in value of the Ringgit compared to the US Dollar since around the middle of 2014. Lafarge Malaysia's first half-year results in 2014 saw rises in revenue and net profit.
Lafarge Malaysia is far and away the market leader in cement production capacity in the country with a production capacity of 12Mt/yr, giving it a market share of nearly half the country's total capacity of around 25Mt/yr. However, it isn't the only cement producer struggling at present. YTL Corporation reported a 12.7% drop in revenue to US$3.85bn for its financial year that ended on 30 June 2015. Net profit fell by 31% to US$257m. Although the company operates across many business sectors, it too partly blamed the losses on its cement sector. This followed gains in profit, bolstered by its cement business, in the financial year that ended on 30 June 2014.
By contrast Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) Cement has benefitted from a construction boom in Sarawak state on the island of Borneo, a region separate from the rest of the country. On-going work on the Pan Borneo Highway has helped sales with other projects on the way. The sole producer with an integrated cement plant in the state ordered a cement grinding plant from Christian Pfeiffer in 2014 with commissioning planned for early 2016. It will be the company's third grinding plant in the state.
The effects of currency depreciation can be seen starkly in the financial results of Lafarge Malaysia and YTL Corporation. Infrastructure spending offers one route out of this as Lafarge are hoping and CMS Cement are experiencing in the relative isolation of Sarawak. However, a sustained low price of oil will test this even for a diversifying economy like Malaysia's. Cement producers in other oil producing nations should take note.
Siemens to supply CMS Cement plant with drive and automation technology
17 September 2014Malaysia: Christian Pfeiffer has contracted Siemens to supply an integrated drive system and automation technology for the new CMS Cement plant in Kuching, Sarawak State.
CMS Cement is adding a new grinding mill to its existing clinker production plant to turn the facility into an integrated cement plant, increasing its capacity to 2.75Mt/yr. Christian Pfeiffer is acting as the general contractor and will supply the new mill. Contracts have already been announced for the new silo and packaging facilities.
The Siemens' Integrated Drive System to be supplied to the plant consists of low and medium voltage motors together with the associated Sinamics drives, including the required converter transformer, starter, compensation system and gearbox. The supply package contains a slip ring motor of 5.6MW for the cement mill's main drive and 500kW, 400kW and 160kW motors for the process gas fan, separator and mill filter fan, respectively. The motors will be driven using Sinamics G150 converters.
Siemens has also supplied a Flender girth gear (DMG2), including drive couplings and auxiliary drive with extremely high performance density. Process control and monitoring will be taken care of by the Cemat process automation system. Based on Simatic PCS 7, this allows comprehensive transparency throughout every phase of the cement manufacturing process.
Once the production process has stabilised following commissioning, CMS Cement will take over additional control functions using Advanced Process Control technology components. Installation monitoring, commissioning and staff training will be carried out on site by Siemens Malaysia.
