Nine-month Chilean cement shipments drop by 14%
09 December 2022Chile: Cement shipments fell by 14% year-on-year during the first nine months of 2022, to 3.2Mt from 3.7Mt. The La Tercera newspaper has reported that a construction slowdown impacted on the cement sales of all three of Chile’s cement producers. Cbb’s despatches fell by 18%, Cementos Melón’s by 15% and Cemento Polpaico’s by 9.5%. At the same time, the producers’ expenses rose due to increased costs across transportation, raw materials, fuels, labour, administration and finance. Meanwhile, imported cement from Asia reportedly presents a cheaper alternative for customers.
Chile: Melón’s new 0.25Mt/yr grinding plant that it is building at Punta Arenas is scheduled to start operation by the end of the first half of 2021. The unit is forecast to produce around 80,000t of cement in its 12 months, according to the La Prensa Austral newspaper. It has had an investment of US$30m and will create around 50 jobs. Spain-based Cemengal was previously reported as the supplier of the mill. It is intended to supply the Magallanes Region including Tierra del Fuego. The cement producer is also considering doubling the production capacity of the grinding plant to 0.5Mt/yr if the market supports it.
Cemengal confirmed as mill supplier for Cementos Melón’s grinding plant at Punta Arenas
29 January 2019Chile: Spain’s Cemengal has been confirmed as the supplier of a mill for Cementos Melón’s grinding plant at Punta Arenas. The unit will use a Plug & Grind Xtreme modular grinding plant. The contract includes all the mechanical, electrical and automation equipment required for a 0.3Mt/yr modular ball mill and a classifier. Cemengal will deliver the mill by the end of 2019 to allow first cement and commissioning of the plant in the first quarter of 2020.
Cementos Melón to build 0.5Mt/yr grinding plant at Punta Arenas
18 December 2018Chile: Cementos Melón plans to build a 0.5Mt/yr grinding plant at Punta Arenas. The new unit will open in the first half of 2020, according to La Prensa Austral newspaper. The project has an initial investment of US$30m with a further US$15m planned to expand the site with a second mill. Construction will start at the site in the second half of 2019. The supplier of the mill has not been named.
Cementos Melon expands Puerto Montt grinding plant
19 November 2018Chile: Cementos Melon has completed a US$25m upgrade to its Puerto Montt grinding plant. The expansion has doubled its production capacity to 0.6Mt/yr from 0.3Mt/yr, according to the Diario Financiero. The project is intended to meet growing demand for cement in the south of the country.
Chile: Cementos Melon financial results for 2017 have been hit by a contraction in the local construction market. Both cement and concrete sales volumes were reduced, according to the Diario Financiero newspaper. Its sales fell by 14% year-on-year to US$298m in 2017 from US$345m in 2016. Its profit dropped by 54% to US$14m from US$30m. The company says that it has constrained fixed costs, logistics and administration to compensate.
Melon struggling against Chilean headwinds
30 November 2017Chile: Cementos Melon has recorded a 56.8% drop in its profit to US$7.8m in the three quarters to 30 September 2017. The company said that a drop in sales had been partly mitigated by greater focus on margins and operational efficiency gains. Its revenue fell by 13.6% to US$210m.
