Wärtsilä to supply 70MW power plant for BUA Cement’s Sokoto cement plant
22 September 2021Nigeria: Finland-based Wärtsilä has secured a contract to supply a 70MW dual-fuel power plant for the upcoming 3Mt/yr Line 4 of its Sokoto cement plant. The power plant is scheduled for commissioning alongside the line before 2023. BUA Cement previously ordered a dual fuel plant for the Sokoto cement plant’s Line 3, which is also scheduled for commissioning alongside that line, in November 2021.
Chair Abdul Samad Rabiu said “BUA Cement is happy and pleased with the progress that Wartsila made with the construction of the power plant we initially purchased for our BUA Cement Sokoto Line 3. We believe Wärtsilä will bring the same level of efficiency, technical expertise and professionalism to bear in ensuring that this new power plant for the 3Mt/yr BUA Cement Sokoto Line 4 will be completed on schedule by the end of 2022 as we look towards bringing BUA’s total capacity in its Sokoto plant to 8Mt/yr by early 2023 and across all its plants to 17Mt/yr by the same time.”
Betolar launches Geoprime alkali-activated slag and fly ash additive
15 September 2021Finland: Betolar has launched Geoprime, an alkali-activated additive for slag and fly ash used in concrete production. The company says that the product will enable concrete production from raw materials with 80% lower CO2 than ordinary Portland cement (OPC).It aims to meet the growing demand for sustainable and cost-effective construction materials. Geoprime enjoys fast global scaling potential thanks to Betolar’s intellectual property licensing business model, which enables the use of existing production facilities, according to the company.
Chief executive officer Matti Löppönen said “We have seen a massive shift in the concrete manufacturing and construction industries driven by investor pressure for environmental, social and governance data transparency and Net Zero commitments, and now people are keen to hear what we have to offer.”
UK: Finland-based Metso Outotec has awarded a contract to Duo Group to provide distribution services for its British aggregates equipment and services business. Under the terms of the contract, Duo Group will deliver the supplier’s products and provide technical support to its quarry customers in England, Scotland and Wales. Metso Outotec presently provides both services itself. The contract will enter force in September 2021.
Distribution management senior vice president Olli-Pekka Oksanen said “We are very pleased to announce the partnership with Duo. The partnership expands our distribution model to include the larger aggregates quarrying customers in the UK. Metso Outotec launches new Nordberg crusher head
24 August 2021Finland: Metso Outotec has launched the Xtreme forged crusher head. The supplier says that this completes the portfolio for Nordberg MP800, MP1000, MP1250, HP800, and HP900 crushers. It is made of one-piece forged material, with geometrical features to assure consistent bearing loading within machine design parameters.
Crushing products senior vice president Chad Smallwood said “Metso Outotec now has a complete range of crusher heads in the portfolio and our customers can choose the level of durability based on their application and needs. The new Xtreme forged head is the most reliable crusher head in the industry. The original equipment manufacturer (OEM) design ensures optimal crushing even where equipment may be pushed beyond design limits.”
SigmaRoc acquires Nordkalk
16 July 2021Finland: UK-based minerals group SigmaRoc has acquired Nordkalk for Euro500m. The group says that Nordkalk, SigmaRoc’s sixth platform, adds a core limestone business from more than 30 locations across 10 European countries. Circular economy products comprise 13% of Nordkalk’s sales volumes. It currently makes careful use of by-products and SigmaRoc says it has a clear ambition towards fossil-free and carbon neutral operations in the future.
SigmaRoc Chair David Barrett said “Nordkalk is a well-established and well-respected business with a substantial asset footprint spanning Northern Europe. It has a long history of success and much future potential. This acquisition creates a raft of new opportunities for SigmaRoc to capitalise on in the months and years ahead.”

Tana celebrates 50th anniversary
30 March 2021Finland: Tana has celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1971. It marked the occasion by setting an ambitious growth target of Euro100m within the next ten years from Euro40.0m in 2020. It said that the ‘open-minded and innovative’ tradition which it has maintained over the past 50 years will continue in future. Tana is a producer of waste shredders.
Finland: Lujabetoni says it has begun work on a new 80 - 100m3/hr ready-mix concrete plant in Kuopio, Northern Savonia to replace its existing plant in the town. The new unit, which will serve construction projects throughout the region, will have an improved raw materials heating system. The plant is scheduled for completion in late 2020 or early 2021.
Krasnoyarsk Cement begins emissions monitoring
09 April 2020Russia: Sibirskiy Cement subsidiary Krasnoyarsk Cement has equipped the exhaust stack of its 1.1Mt/yr Krasnoyarsk, Siberia plant with an emissions monitoring system supplied by Finland-based Gasmet. The system provides continuous NOx, CO2 and SO2 monitoring via a UK-based Oxitec 500E gas analyser, Germany-based Durag D-FL-220 flow rate meter and a Gasmet Simatic computer. Krasnoyarsk managing director Vladimir Afanasin said, “We approached the choice of equipment taking into account all the requirements of the Russian environmental legislation, which have recently been significantly tightened.”
Krasnoyarsky Cement will complete preliminary testing of the installation in late 2020.
Kari Liuska appointed as chief executive officer of Tana
01 April 2020Finland: Tana has appointed Kari Liuska as its chief executive officer (CEO) with effect from 1 May 2020. Present CEO and owner Kari Kangas will continue as chairman of the board.
Liuska will transfer to Tana from Etteplan Oyj, where he worked as a Senior Vice President in Software and Embedded Solutions. Liuska has worked in Etteplan's management positions since 2016 and before that as managing director of Espotel.
Kangas, the owner-CEO of Tana Oy, will become the full-time chairman of the board. A smooth transition is anticipated as Liuska has been a member of the board of Tana for around one year.
Tana is a waste management company that produces landfill compactors, waste shredders and waste screening technologies.
Metso Corporation to centralise European warehouse operations
27 January 2020Finland: Machinery manufacturer Metso Corporation has announced plans to consolidate its European warehouse operations, currently spread over Norway, Sweden, the UK, France, Spain, the Czech Republic, Turkey and Russia, into a single location. Metso Corporation customer logistics senior vice president Jarkko Aro said the move ‘would also enable considerable savings in end-to-end freight costs and reduced CO2 emissions.’ 40 employees are potentially affected. Metso Corporation has not disclosed any locations under consideration for the facility.
