India: Vicat Cement subsidiary Bharathi Cement has inaugurated its 750,000t/yr Coimbatore cement terminal in Tamil Nadu. The Deccan Chronicle newspaper has reported that the terminal will serve Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The facility has dedicated container wagons and a 24-hour loading facility with end-to-end logistical automation.

Vicat India chief executive officer Anoop Kumar Saxena said "With its rapid infrastructure development and urbanisation, India proves to be a key market for our business. By investing in the new terminal we align with our commitment towards India's progress and growth. The Coimbatore terminal is Vicat India's second terminal after the Mumbai terminal, which was set up in 2018.

El Salvador: Holcim El Salvador has officially inaugurated an upgrade to its Maya cement plant. The company has invested US$11.6m towards increasing clinker production capacity by 0.45Mt/yr at the unit. Total cement production capacity of the plant has increased to 1.9Mt/yr from 1.2Mt/yr previously. The Maya cement plant previously reduced production levels significantly in 2008 in response to the global financial crisis at the same time. Oliver Osswald, Region Head of Holcim LATAM, attended the inauguration. The event was also used to launch Holcim’s new corporate branding in the region.

India: Ghohari Cement says that it has ignited the new kiln of its Laxmipur cement plant in Dang District. Shivam Cement assistant engineer Nilesh Chouhan said that kiln inlet temperature monitoring was underway on 18 February 2022.

Nigeria: President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated BUA Group’s new 3.0Mt/yr Line 4 at its Sokoto plant in northern Nigeria on 27 January 2022. The plant is the largest private sector employer of labour in the north-western part of Nigeria.

At the inauguration, the President expressed delight that the Federal Government policies on economic diversification, job creation and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive were working. He pledged to continue his administration’s support for ‘serious investors’ to set up businesses that will take advantage of huge reserves of resources in different parts of the country.

The President thanked the Founder of BUA Cement, Abdul Samad Rabiu and the BUA team for the ‘great work they are doing’ in supporting the government's economic diversification and job creation agenda.

Speaking personally, President Buhari added that, as the head of Sokoto State in 1985, he had also inaugurated Line 2 at the same plant, saying, "Today, almost 37 years later, to commission the fourth line is a very special day for me personally. As you all know, one of the key economic pillars of our administration has been to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. This is necessary for job creation and indeed, for our economy and national security.”

Mexico: Holcim subsidiary Holcim Mexico has inaugurated its new 650,000t/yr cement grinding plant at Umán in Yucatán. The cost of the project was US$40m. The plant will receive clinker from its integrated plants at Macuspana in Tabasco, and Orizaba in Veracruz. The producer says that the plant will optimise delivery times for cement customers in the area. It says that it will create 400 local jobs.

General director Jaime Hill Tinoco said, “At Holcim we are very proud to continue growing with the community, as well as to continue promoting well-being in the region through the creation of direct jobs, infrastructure and investment with this new grinding plant that, as I pointed out on the day that the first stone was laid, will strengthen national and foreign investments in benefit of the growth of the region.”

Mozambique: Chinese West International Holding subsidiary Dugongo Cement has inaugurated its 2.0Mt/yr integrated Matutuine cement plant in Maputo province. The unit had an investment of US$330m, according to the Mozambique News Agency. The site includes a captive 36MW charcoal-fired power station and a residential complex for some of its 300 permanent staff.

President Filipe Nyusi said, “The Dugongo Cement plant will improve the economy of the cement industry, because it will reduce the import of inputs such as clinker."

Argentina: Holcim Argentina, part of Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim, has inaugurated a new 0.5Mt/yr clinker production line at its Malagueño cement plant in Cordoba. The new line increases the plant’s clinker production capacity by 45%. Additionally, a new 630,000t/yr grinding plant will increase the plant’s cement capacity to 4.7Mt/yr.

Chief executive officer Christian Dedeu said, "With this expansion of our capacity, more than 450km of road and more than 7.2Mm² of housing can be built - equivalent to more than 72,000 houses." He added, "The new line is a big bet on the domestic market and responds to the growing national demand for materials for residential construction, private investment and infrastructure works."

India: Naveen Patnaik, the chief minister of Odisha, has attended the inauguration of Ramco Cement’s new cement grinding plant at Haridaspur. The unit had a cost of just under US$100m and has created 105 direct jobs. A LM 46.2+2 CS type vertical roller mill with a capacity of 3750kW has ordered from Germany-based Loesche in 2018 for the project. The cement producer says that the plant is designed to be ‘totally dust free,’ including bag filters designed to ensure emission levels below 30mg/m³.

Mexico: Elementia has announced the commissioning of a new 0.25Mt/yr grinding plant in Progreso, Yucatán State. The group says that the plant cost US$25m. Chief executive officer (CEO) Jaime Rocha Font said “Through this project, Elementia aims to participate in the growth of the Yucatán Peninsula and Southern Mexico.”

Egypt: Egyptian Cement Group’s chief executive officer (CEO) Ahmed Abou Hashima says that the company plans to inaugurate its new cement factory in 2021. The plant is located in Sohag and has a total investment cost of US$285m, according to the Hapi Journal. The 2Mt/yr project was originally scheduled to open in the first half of 2020 but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
