ARM Cement sells assets for US$50m
21 May 2019Kenya: ARM Cement has signed a deal to sell its business in Kenya to the National Cement Company for US$50m. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals, according to the Business Standard newspaper. ARM Cement also has operations in Tanzania, Rwanda and some interests, in the form of unexploited mineral deposits, in South Africa.
“This transaction is in line with National Cement’s growth strategy in Kenya to position itself as the leading cement manufacturer in the region. The industry is poised for growth and we are excited about the prospects for this next chapter of our business. We will endeavor to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders including the employees, customers, and suppliers in the overall interest of Kenya,” said Narendra Raval, chairman of National Cement.
The cement producer was placed under administration in August 2018. In late 2018 Oman’s Raysut Cement said it planned to buy ARM Cement as part of its expansion plans. Nigeria’s Dangote Cement was also linked to a potential purchase of the company.
US: National Cement is tendering for a new 5000t/day production line at its Ragland plant in Alabama. The subsidiary of France’s Vicat has reportedly had a permit for the upgrade since 2006. The plant operates one dry process kiln with a production capacity of 1.9Mt/yr.
National Cement Company’s profit wilts so far in 2018
16 November 2018UAE: National Cement Company’s profit fell by 5.8% to US$12.1m in the first nine months of 2018 from US$12.9m in the same period in 2017. This was accompanied by a marked increase in administration, selling and distribution costs. Despite this, its revenue rose by 7.6% to US$55m from US$41.8m.
Kima to sell National Cement land to pay off debts
08 November 2018Egypt: The Egyptian Chemical Industries Company (Kima) plans to sell the land belonging to National Cement within the next year. Chief executive officer (CEO) Emad el-Din Mostafa said that the bankrupt cement producer owns over 300 hectares of land, according to Arab Finance. Selling the assets is part of the Ministry of Public Business Sector’s strategy to pay the former cement producer’s debts including worker salaries. The sale is expected to generate up to US$39m.
Simba Cement opens new grinding plant in Uganda
29 August 2018Uganda: Simba Cement has opened a new 1Mt/yr grinding plant in Tororo. The unit had an investment of US$45m, according to the Daily Monitor newspaper. The plant was built by Mepani Technical Services and construction started in early 2016. Simba Cement Uganda is a subsidiary of National Cement Kenya, which is part of Devki Group.
Kenya: The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has committed US$96m to invest in National Cement towards upgrading a cement plant and building new grinding plants. National Cement’s chairman and chief shareholder Narendra Raval is also expected to invest US$102m into the expansion project, according to the Daily Nation newspaper. The company intends to build two grinding plants in Kenya and Uganda and a new 5500t/day clinker production line at its existing integrated plant in Merrueshi in Kenya. It also plans to build a 8MW captive power plant at Merrueshi.
Nepal: The Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) has taken action against seven cement producers that have broken its standards in the current financial year that runs to mid-July 2018. The bureau found defects in product declarations made by the industries, according to the Republica newspaper. The sanctioned cement companies were MJP Cement, Ganapati Cement, Hetauda Cement, National Cement, Supreme Cement, Himalayas Cement and Nepal Ambuja Cement. The bureau has suspended the license of MJP Cement and asked the other companies not to sell their products until the quality is restored.
The cement producers were found to be breaking the quality of their products, incorrectly declaring products and failing to meet technical requirements such as the compressive strength grade mandated by the Nepal Standard Regulations. The NBSM has asked all the companies to provide it with written clarification within 15 days of the inspection.
National Cement reports decline in profits
12 February 2018UAE: National Cement Company (NCC) has reported a decline in its profit to US$14.59m in the full year 2017 from US$24.24m in 2016. Revenues also fell to US$55.77m from US$64.11m.
President inaugurates US$280m National Cement plant in Kenya
09 February 2018Kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta has inaugurated National Cement’s US$280m integrated plant in Kajiado County. The clinker plant has a production capacity of 1.2Mt/yr and it set to employ 700 workers, according to the Agence de Presse Africaine. The plant also includes a 15MW captive power plant.
New cement plants in Uganda expected to swamp demand
09 January 2018Uganda: Three new cement plants or upgrades to existing plants opening in 2018 are expected to dwarf local demand. Hima Cement, a subsidiary of LafargeHolcim, plans to open a new 1Mt/yr grinding plant at Nyakesi, Tororo Cement is expanding its plant to 3Mt/yr and Kenya's National Cement is building a plant at Mbale, according to the Ugandan Independent newspaper. Following completion of the three projects local production capacity will rise to 6.8Mt/yr from 3.6Mt/yr. Local demand is 2.4Mt/yr.
Cement industry executives are expecting growth in the construction industry as the government starts infrastructure projects in the oil and gas sector. The cement producers also expect export markets to support local production capacity growth, particularly in South Sudan, western Kenya and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
