Fauji Cement’s sustainability initiatives slash 215,000t of CO2 emissions in 2022 financial year

Pakistan: Fauji Cement says that its sustainability initiatives across its three cement plants reduced CO2 emissions by 215,000t in the 2022 financial year. The Pakistan Today newspaper has reported that clinker factor reduction in reduced-CO2 products such as Askari Green cement and Pamir cement eliminated 89,900t-worth of emissions, 42% of total reductions. Waste heat recovery (WHR) plants eliminated 79,400t of emissions (37%), solar power plants eliminated 31,500t (15%), alternative fuel (AF) substitution eliminated 8030t (3.5%) and reforestation eliminated 600t (2.5%).

Fauji Cement orders three Gebr. Pfeiffer mills for Salar cement plant

Pakistan: Fauji Cement has ordered three MVR vertical roller mills from Germany-based Gebr. Pfeiffer for its upcoming Salar cement plant in Dera Ghazi Khan/Punjab Province. The supplier says that the order consists of a 520t/hr MVR 5600 R-4 mill for grinding raw materials and two 180t/hr MVR 5000 C-4 mills for cement grinding. China-based Hefei Cement will handle the order.

DG Khan Cement to start exporting cement to the US

Pakistan: DG Khan Cement Company is ready to export 50,000t of cement to the US following a certification process. The Tomini Felicity bulk carrier was reportedly being loaded at the Port of Karachi in mid-June 2022 for shipping to Houston in Texas, according to the News International newspaper. The transport is part of a 100,000t deal with a US-based company that was arranged in mid-2021. The intervening period has been spent arranging the necessary certificates. The export is believed to be the first time a Pakistan-based producer has sent cement to the US.

Pakistani 10-month cement sales drop in 2022

Pakistan: Cement producers in Pakistan sold 44.3Mt of cement in the first 10 months of the 2022 Pakistani financial year, which runs from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022, down by 8.2% year-on-year from 48.3Mt in the corresponding period of 2021.Members of the All Pakistan Cement Producers Association (APCMA) record domestic deliveries of 39.5Mt, down by 1.8% from 40.2Mt, and exports of 4.8Mt, down by 40% from 8.02Mt.

The association said that political and economic uncertainty in March 2022 had stalled construction sector investments. It called on the government to help to increase sales and reduce the cost of cement production.

Lucky Cement’s nine-month sales and profit rise in 2022 financial year

Pakistan: Lucky Cement has recorded nine-month sales of US$1.17bn in its 2022 financial year, up by 38% year-on-year from US$846m in the corresponding period of 2021. The company’s consolidated cement volumes fell by 7.1% to 7.07Mt, while its unconsolidated cement volumes fell by 3.4% to 5.51Mt. Unconsolidated costs per tonne of cement rose by 49%. Explaining its net sales growth, the company noted the ‘impressive’ performance of its overseas cement business, which includes a stake in Democratic Republic of Congo-based Nyumba Ya Akiba Cement. Lucky Cement’s profit after tax for the period was US$143m, up by 20% from US$119m.

Lucky Cement says that a cement plant expansion in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is progressing and on-schedule for completion in 2022.

Financing revealed for Power Cement’s solar project

Pakistan: Meezan Bank, an Islamic bank, and Burj Solar Energy (BSE) have announced the completion of a US$5m syndicated Islamic finance facility for BSE's portfolio of renewable distributed power generation in Pakistan.

A first tranche of US$3.2m will be used to finance the construction of a 7MW solar power plant for Power Cement on the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway. The solar power plant will be rented to Power Cement under a 20-year equipment rental agreement to supply the company's cement plant in Nooriabad. It will generate 220GWh solar units for 20 years and, in addition to reducing cost of electricity, will offset 112,000t of CO2 emissions. The project is expected to start generating power in July 2022.

Kidnapped DG Cement workers rescued

11 April 2022

Pakistan: Three workers from DG Cement’s Dera Ghazi Khan cement plant who were kidnapped have been rescued following negotiation. Tribal elders spoke to the Laadi gang that abducted the workers and no ransom was paid, according to the Dawn newspaper. The gang’s demands included establishing a school and building water reservoirs in the area. The gang kidnapped the workers in early April 2022. 12 associates of the gang have been detained.

Local gang kidnaps three DG Khan Cement workers from Dera Ghazi Khan cement plant

Pakistan: Three DG Khan Cement workers have been kidnapped by the local Ladi gang from the company’s Dera Ghazi Khan cement plant. The Dawn newspaper has reported that the employees has been inspecting the plant’s raw materials belt when the kidnap occurred.

Lucky Cement to build 34MW solar power plant at Pezu power plant

Pakistan: Lucky Cement plans to install a 34MW solar power plant at its Pezu power plant in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Balochistan Times newspaper has reported that the 48GWh/yr installation will be equipped with a 5.59MWh Reflex energy storage system. Both the power plant and energy system will be the country’s largest when commissioned. Fossil fuel generation will remain online, but be shut down in the daytime, saving 26,600t/yr of CO2 emissions.
