Lucky Cement increases first-quarter profit by 130%

Pakistan: Lucky Cement recorded a profit of US$13.8m in the first quarter of the 2021 financial year, which begun on 1 July 2020, up by 130% year-on-year from US$5.95m in the first quarter of the 2020 financial year. Net sales rose by 49% to US$89.0m from US$59.8m The cement producer said that the rise resulted from, “a massive recovery in margins amid improvement in retention prices and robust off-take.”

The company added that its upcoming 1.2Mt/yr integrated Samawah cement plant in Iraq is on schedule to begin commercial production in December 2020.

Dalmia Bharat announces US$272m Kalaburgi cement plant plan

India: Dalmia Bharat plans to build an integrated cement plant in Kalaburgi, Karnataka. BusinessLine Online News has reported that the plant will cost around US$270m.

The company already operates the 2.5Mt/yr Belagavi plant in the state, which it commissioned in March 2015. Chief Minister Bookanakere Yediyurappa said, “Karnataka is proud to be home to Dalmia Bharat group and look forward to strengthening the relationship further.”

Kao Cement breaks ground on 1Mt/yr integrated cement plant project

Niger: President Issoufou Mahamadou has launched the construction of the upcoming 1Mt/yr Kao cement plant at a ceremony at the integrated plant’s site in Kao, Tahoua Region. Minister of Industry Adeniyi Adebayo said that the US$290m plant will generate 314 jobs, according to the Angola Press Agency. It is expected to be completed by early 2022. Kao Cement is 33% owned by private investors from Niger and Mauritania.

Shiva Cement prepares for new clinker unit

India: Shiva Cement is preparing to break ground on an expansion project to set up a 4000t/day clinker unit and a 1Mt/yr grinding unit. The subsidiary of JSW Cement will spend around US$208m on the works from a mixture of debt and equity.

Moroto Ateker Cement plant set for construction

22 October 2020

Uganda: The Uganda Development Corporation has announced that its subsidiary Moroto Ateker Cement is ready to begin construction of a 1.2Mt/yr integrated cement plant in Moroto District. The New Vision newspaper has reported that employees are clearing land and erecting a fence around the site. The company says that cement production will follow 18 months after the start of construction of the complex, which will also produce lime and marble. Senior engineer David Ekanya said that 600 local people will be directly employed in the plant’s operations.

It was previously reported in 2016 that Moroto Ateker Cement is a 51:49 joint venture of the state-owned Uganda Development Corporation and Savannah Mines.

Marta Abreu University pilot plant starts calcined clay cement production

22 October 2020

Cuba: The production of ‘low-carbon’ (LC3) cement consisting of clinker, calcined clay, limestone and gypsum has begun at Marta Abreu University’s 1460t/yr pilot integrated cement plant in Las Villas. The Granma newspaper has reported that the plant is currently producing 4t/day of cement, and plans to double this to 8t/day when fully operational.

Samrat Cement and Dang Cement receive approval for new cement plant investments

21 October 2020

Nepal: The Investment Board Nepal has granted approval to Samrat Cement and Dang Cement for cement production at their upcoming integrated cement plants. New Business Age has reported that Samrat Cement will begin production at its 1.3Mt/yr cement plant in Dang Region in December 2020, and plans to increase the plant’s capacity to 1.6Mt/yr after a total investment of US$132m. Dang Cement’s 2.0Mt/yr cement plant, also in Dang region, is due for commissioning in late 2023 at a total investment cost of US$277m.

Samrat Cement Chair Mukunda Timilsina said, “We have brought modern machineries with German technology and skilled manpower is coming from India for this purpose.” He added that the plant will directly employ 500 local people and supply cement throughout western Nepal.

Dewan Cement and Lucky Cement called before environmental hearings

Pakistan: The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has arranged hearings on 21 October 2020 over alleged environmental protection regulation violations by Dewan Cement and Lucky Cement at their respective Kamilpur and Karachi cement plants in the province. The provincial agency, “has expedited its monitoring activities throughout the province to manage different types of pollution at their source.”

Kilns break down at Akhangarancement and Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine cement plants

Uzbekistan: Cement sales volumes has decreased by 29% to 5000t/day from 7000t/day at the Akhangarancement cement plant in Toshkent and by 55% to 5000t/day from 11,000t/day at the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine cement plant in Jizzakh. Uzbekistan Newsline has reported the cause of the decline as the breakdown of two kilns at the plants. This has led to a decrease in domestic cement production to 37,000t/day and sales to 35,000t/day, resulting in a slight price increase. Prices had previously been falling due to the effects of the post-coronavirus lockdown economic recovery.

JK Cement completes Katni wall putty plant expansion

India: JK Cement has increased the capacity of its Katni wall putty plant in Madhya Pradesh to 700,000t/yr from 400,000t/yr. Projects Today News has reported that the putty consists mainly of JK Cement white cement. The company now has a wall putty production capacity of 1.2Mt/yr.
