Taiwan: Taiwan Cement Corporation (TCC) and 100 construction firms have together launched the Low Carbon Construction Pioneer Alliance. CNA News has reported that the founding members eliminated 146,000t of CO₂ emissions altogether through their use of reduced-CO2 building materials since November 2024. This includes despatches of 800,000m3 of Portland limestone cement (PLC) concrete by TCC, with 2.5Mm3 in cumulative orders to date. TCC first launched its PLC in October 2023, touting an emissions reduction of 15% compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). It since enlarged the net reduction to 24% through production modifications.
Taiwan Cement chair Zhang Anping said "TCC took the initiative to align with the Global Cement and Concrete Association and released the lowest-carbon PLC concrete in Taiwan. The CO2 reduction is far greater than the 53% as defined by the government.”
US: The Portland Cement Association (PCA) has commended the Connecticut Department of Transportation's approval of Portland limestone cement (PLC), marking its acceptance in all US states and the District of Columbia. PLC, with increased limestone content, maintains traditional Portland cement's efficacy but reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 10%. The US avoided more than 4Mt of CO₂ emissions in 2023 by using PLC and other blended cements. This achievement coincides with growing cement consumption by state transportation departments, fuelled by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Mike Ireland, president and CEO of PCA, said "This milestone is a huge step forward for sustainable American construction. Switching to PLC promises to save millions of tonnes of CO₂. Using a lower-emission product that meets all the performance requirements of traditional cement means the construction sector can build with durability, safety and sustainability in mind."
Eagle Materials publishes 2023 Sustainability Report
22 February 2024US: Eagle Materials has outlined its climate change mitigation successes in its 2023 Sustainability Report. During 2023, the company increased its production of blended cement products, including Portland Limestone Cement (PLC). It commenced a major CO2 reduction study with the US Department of Energy, and established a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Team to explore new clean technologies. Eagle Materials says that it is currently working to increase the use of alternative fuels at three of its cement plants.
Lafarge Canada producing 100% Portland limestone cement at St-Constant cement plant
19 February 2024Canada: Lafarge Canada has transitioned its St-Constant, Quebec, cement plant to the production of OneCem Portland limestone cement (PLC). The producer expects the transition to reduce the St-Constant cement plant’s CO2 emissions by 60,000t in 2024 alone.
Lafarge Canada (East) president and CEO David Redfern said "We are excited to take another crucial step in our sustainability journey. The transition to OneCem production at our St-Constant plant indicates Lafarge Canada's nonstop commitment to driving positive change within our construction industry. Our teams have been engaged in reducing our products’ environmental impact by embracing greener practices and materials."
UK: The World Cement Association (WCA) has welcomed the introduction of the revised BS 8500 standard, which allows for a wider range of Portland limestone cement (PLC) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) combinations in concrete. WCA chief executive officer Ian Riley, however, described the revision as ‘not breaking new ground but catching up.’ He called on the UK and other jurisdictions to begin enacting performance-based standards.
Riley said “It is good to see BSI making this change to concrete standards, however, this is still a very modest step forward. Firstly, ground limestone has been used successfully as a cement component in many markets for decades. Secondly, in order to produce concrete with the lowest embodied carbon and the highest circularity, we need to move away from standards that require particular recipes.”
Heidelberg Materials’ Delta cement plant switches to full Portland limestone cement production
30 August 2023Canada: Heidelberg Materials says that its integrated Delta cement plant in British Columbia has switched to exclusively producing its EcoCem Portland limestone cement (PLC). EcoCem PLC is a Portland limestone cement that contains up to 15% limestone and generates approximately 10% less CO₂ compared to other Portland cements. It has equivalent performance to ASTM and CSA standards for Type I/II Portland cement in strength and durability, and can be used in any application where Portland cement Type I is normally used.
Prior to the full transition to PLC production, the plant had already taken steps to reduce its CO2 emissions by using alternative fuels. The Delta cement plant has been in operation since the 1970s.
US: The United States Geological Survey has reported that the US consumed 40.5Mt-worth of cement shipments in the first five months of 2023. This corresponds to a 4.3% year-on-year fall from five-month 2022 volumes of 41.5Mt. Blended cement, primarily Type IL Portland limestone cement (PLC), accounted for 37% of shipments, compared to 16% in the corresponding period of 2022. Total demand rose by 4.3% year-on-year and by 19% month-on-month to 10.2Mt in May 2023. Imports of cement and clinker totalled 10.5Mt. The leading source of imported cement and clinker were Türkiye, which supplied 3.34Mt (32%), Canada, which supplied 1.58Mt (15%), and Vietnam, which supplied 1.3Mt (13%).
US production of clinker dropped by 2.1% to 29.5Mt in the first five months of 2023, from 30.1Mt a year earlier.
Nigeria: Lafarge Africa has applied to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to use the product name Roadcem for its CEM-II Portland limestone cement (PLC) when sold in bulk. The Nigeria Tribune newspaper has reported that Lafarge Africa supplies PLC in bulk for use as a soil stabiliser in roadbuilding. It sells supplies the product bagged to retailers as Classic PLC.
SON certified Lafarge Africa's PLC under its Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme.
US: Heidelberg Materials North America inaugurated its 2.4Mt/yr Mitchell cement plant in Indiana on 14 July 2023. The plant is equipped with a 3600 bag/hr rotary packer, and also boasts a 154,000t-capacity clinker storage dome. It will produce Heidelberg Materials North America's EcoCem Portland limestone cement (PLC), alongside other products. The producer said that the new plant will help to address US cement supply chain constraints amid a planned US$110bn infrastructure overhaul.
Heidelberg Materials North America president and chief executive officer Chris Ward said "The plant will reduce CO2 emissions per tonne of clinker by almost 30%, mainly through operating on natural gas. Our investment in the Mitchell facility helps us lower our carbon footprint, while serving the growing demand for more sustainable products in this key market.”
Philippines: Holcim Philippines introduced Holcim Optima, a blended Portland limestone cement (PLC), on the Philippine market on 8 June 2023. The Business Mirror newspaper has reported that Holcim Optima cement offers 10% reduced CO2 emissions compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC).
President and CEO Horia Adrian said that Holcim Optima cement 'delivers the same strength, workability and durability as OPC and remains compatible with other cement additives such as slag and fly ash. The new product is best used in large building projects and available in bulk.' Adrian added "It is a timely product for the Philippines, as infrastructure building accelerates and green demand grows."
