Dangote Cement to ship cement and raw materials via Port of Mtwara

21 March 2022

Tanzania: Dangote Cement has signed an agreement with the Tanzanian Ports Authority whereby it will ship cement from its Mtwara cement plant and raw materials for its Tanzanian operations via the Port of Mtwara. Ecofin Agency News has reported that the company previously used the road network for both materials. This had a negative impact on local roads and prevented it from exporting the Mtwara cement plant’s cement overseas.

Congo government halves cement transport tolls

Congo: The government has reduced tolls on the transport of cement by road by 50%. The Journal de Brazza newspaper has reported that the government contacted Dangote Cement to encourage it to resume dispatches from its Ndingui cement plant.

Cementos Argos donates cement for local roads

26 January 2022

Colombia: Cementos Argos has donated 21,500 bags (1075t) of cement to the Mayor's Office of Sogamoso to contribute to the rehabilitation of several main roads in Sogamoso, Boyacá and thus contribute to the improvement of the mobility of the municipality and benefit to more than 30,000 people. The company’s Sogamoso de Argos plant is in the vicinity.

“This donation has been fundamental for us. An acknowledgment, a thank you to Argos,” commented Rigoberto Alfonso, mayor of Sogamoso.

Holcim and Magment to develop magnetisable concrete technology for electric vehicle charging

Switzerland/Germany: Holcim has announced the launch of a strategic partnership with inductive charging technology developer Magment to test and commercialise magnetisable concrete technology for use in roads. The technology will power and charge electric vehicles as they drive on roads fitted with Magment. Another possible application is in industrial floors, to charge robots and forklifts.

Holcim’s Global Innovation Center head Edelio Bermejo said: “At Holcim we are innovating to put concrete at the centre of our world’s transition to net-zero. With Magment, we are excited to be developing concrete solutions to accelerate electric mobility. Partnering with start-ups all over the world, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation to lead the way in sustainability.”

Bashundhara Cement to supply cement for Dhaka road project

Bangladesh: Bashundhara Cement has signed an agreement with China-based Fifth Major Bridge Engineering to supply cement for the Dhaka Ashulia Elevated Expressway. The 24km road will connect Shahjalal International Airport to the Dhaka Export Processing Zone, according to the Daily Sun newspaper. Chinese investors will fund 65% of the estimated cost of the project under Preferential Buyer’s Credit. Bangladesh will have to repay the costs within 20 years, with 2% interest rate and a grace period of five years. Bashundhara cement products are also being used in 14 large scale bridge projects, 11 power plants, and water and sewage treatment plants.

Tarmac supplies glow-in-the-dark concrete for major development in Chesterfield

UK: Tarmac has supplied its Toptint Glow glow-in-the-dark concrete for a major mixed-use commercial development called The Glass Yard in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Construction company Blue Deer used Toptint Glow in the main walkways and first-floor balconies of the office, restaurant and retail complex. France-based Chryso supplied its Lumintech glow-in-the-dark chippings for use in the concrete. The supplier said that the chippings are fully recycled. They are available in white, stone, light grey, agate and jade to match the colour of the concrete mix. Each has a corresponding glow colour of blue, green turquoise or blue turquoise. Tarmac says that glow-in-the-dark concrete helps to enhance the nighttime built environment.

Product development manager Glanville Norman said “Tarmac is always looking to develop new and exciting materials that can complement bold design. This is the first time that Toptint Glow has been used on a major commercial development and we were delighted to be able to propose a solution that not only has high aesthetic and environmental quality but also helped to improve safety and visibility.”

Cemfree supplies its cement-free concrete for road construction in Cambridge

UK: Construction company Milestone Infrastructure used cement-free concrete supplied by DB Group subsidiary Cemfree to lay kerbs for a new road in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. The work consisted of a road widening in order to create new cycle and bus lanes with floating bus stops and an innovative cycle roundabout. Milestone Infrastructure built 13,000m2 of new paths and cycle lanes, diverted 74 underground utilities and resurfaced 18,000m2 of road. The project begun in February 2020.

Hanson Contracting implements Causeway Ermeo workforce management software

UK: Road building company Hanson Contracting has begun rolling out Causeway Ermeo mobile workforce management software across its operations. The technology will replace paper forms and workflows. The software connects construction sites and offices through digital workflows, with easy-to-use reporting functions. Hanson Contracting plans to also digitise its timesheets, risk assessments, plant inspections, holiday requests and other manual processes.

Business manager Chris Harrison said “There is a lot of excitement from our business improvement team for Causeway Ermeo. We are always looking for any efficiencies and lean improvements to make in the business, and we see this solution as a key one." He added “We want data and technology to be at the heart of everything that we do. It gives us better operational and commercial performance on-site and also aligns us with our key customer’s vision for the future, in line with the National Highways Digital Roads strategy.”

Bruks Siwertell supplies road-mobile ship unloader to Ozinga

US: Sweden-based Bruks Siwertell has delivered a 5000 S road-mobile ship unloader to Ozinga. The product was originally ordered in 2020 and it provides a continuous rated unloading capacity of 300t/hr for vessels up to 5000dwt. It is Ozinga’s first order from Bruks Siwertell.

Ozinga specialises in concrete, dry bulk materials and natural gas energy solutions. It operates a network of truck, rail, barge and ship terminals mostly in the mid-west region of the US, where the new ship unloader will be used.

Uttar Pradesh government announces road building investment plans

26 July 2021

India: The government of Uttar Pradesh plans to build over 10,000km of new roads in rural areas. The state is presently engaged in the construction of 6500km of road, consisting of 800 separate roads and five bridges. The Times of India newspaper has reported that the latest proposals await the approval of the national government. Some of the roads will be rebuilt using full depth reclamation with cement and other additives.
