Croatia: Zeljeznice, the Bosnia & Herzegovina railway federation, has signed a partnership with Croatia’s PPD Transport to transport gypsum to Nasicecement. The deal is to transport 20,000t of raw gypsum by the end of 2017 from supplier Rudnici Gipsa based in Donji Vakuf in Bosnia & Herzegovina, according to Klix media. Shipments were scheduled to start from the beginning of July 2017. No value for the contract has been disclosed.

French Guiana: Colombia’s Cementos Argos plans to supply 21,000t of cement for a launch pad for the Ariane 6 launcher being built by the European Space Agency. Argos is providing three difference types of cement for the project that is scheduled for completion in 2018 and inauguration in 2020. The project has a budget of Euro600m and around 800 personnel are working on the construction site.

Canada: The Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) has struck a deal with Lafarge Canada to sell drinking water treatment residuals to the Richmond cement plant for use in cement production. The contract is for a three-year agreement up to a total cost of just under US$1m, according to Postmedia News. The deal follows a 12-month industrial trial that started in mid-2016.

The residuals will be used as a substitute for shale in the production process. Around 10,000t/yr of residuals will be used to replace 2100t/yr of red shale and conglomerate that are currently supplied from a quarry at Sumas Mountain, Abbotsford. The use of residuals doesn’t affect the plant’s Air Quality Permit following stack tests. As part of the agreement Lafarge will need to build additional storage capacity at its plant.

Ireland/Sweden: Ecocem has arranged a deal with Boliden to supply mines in Ireland and Sweden. The two mines concerned by this deal are Boliden Tara Mines in Ireland and Boliden Garpenberg in Sweden. The agreements are initially for three years with options for extensions.

Ecocem have entered into an agreement with the Port of Gavle, the nearest Port to the Boliden Garpenberg mine. The Port of Gavle has built an import terminal to unload ships, and transfer the Ecocem product to trucks destined for the mine. The new facility will accommodate approximately 8000t. Ecocem’s cement will be pumped into the mine to backfill voids created by excavation.

Boliden’s environmental performance and ambitions are very much in line with our own and we feel that these contracts represent a strong vote of confidence on the consistency of performance and service that Ecocem deliver,” said Conor O’Riain, the managing director of Ecocem Ireland.

Uganda: Hima Cement has signed a memorandum of understanding with Guangzhou Dongsong Energy Group Company for the supply of over 40,000t of cement. The deal is to support the construction of industrial projects on an industrial park in Sukulu, according to the Kampala Observer. Guangzhou Dongsong Energy Group is a Chinese company that holds a lease to mine and process phosphates in Sukulu, Tororo district.

"The purpose of this memorandum of understanding is to establish the relationship between Hima and Guangzhou Dongsong. This cooperation of both parties shall cover the project of construction of the phosphate plant and steel plant, and any other projects within the Sukulu industrial park," said Daniel Pettersson, the chief executive officer of Hima Cement Uganda. Hima Cement also hopes to be able to purchase slag from the steel plant once it is built.
