FYM-HeidelbergCement suspends clinker production at Málaga cement plant

18 March 2022

Spain: FYM-HeidelbergCement’s Málaga cement plant has temporarily ceased to produce clinker due to high electricity costs. The La Razón newspaper has reported that the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine have made clinker production economically unfeasible at the plant.

Lafarge Zimbabwe concludes Manresa grinding plant roof collapse assessment

18 January 2022

Zimbabwe: Lafarge Zimbabwe has concluded its assessment of the collapse of its Manresa grinding plant’s roof, which occured in October 2021. The company warned investors that continued disruptions to cement production and the cost of repairs will have a negative impact on its 2022 first-quarter results. It added that normal operations would resume ‘as soon as possible.’

UltraTech Cement suspends production at Awarpur cement plant due to sit-in

22 December 2021

India: UltraTech Cement has announced its decision to temporarily suspend production at its Awarpur cement plant in Maharashtra after it became impossible to operate the plant due to the activities of sit-in protestors. The Times of India newspaper has reported that informal union Vijay Kranti Kantrati Kamgar Sanghatna (VKKKS) organised sit-ins at all five cement plants in Chandrapur district. The organisation is protesting workers’ pay.

Protestors block access to Van Ninh cement plant

08 November 2021

Vietnam: Local residents have blocked entrances to Van Ninh cement plant in Quang Binh’s Quang Ninh district in protest against alleged pollution violations. Van Ninh Cement previously incurred a US$3100 fine for dust emissions following a similar protest in 2017. The residents have put up tents in which to sleep in front of the plant in order to prevent the blockade’s removal.

Big Boss Cement suspends operations until 2022

20 October 2021

Philippines: Big Boss Cement has reportedly suspended business operations until 2022. An unnamed source at the company quoted by the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper said that the company is ‘rehabilitating’ its facilities. It added that the company is using a lull in business to make changes.

The company was set up by SM Group heir Henry Sy Jr in 2018. It opened a grinding plant at Porac in Pampanga, Luzon in 2018 and commissioned a third mill at the site in late 2020. Notably the unit manufactures its own secondary cementitious material, which it calls Granulated Activated Sand by Heating, as well as importing clinker and other raw materials.

Gujarat Sidhee Cement suspends Sidheegram cement plant’s clinker production for maintenance work

07 September 2021

India: Gujarat Sidhee Cement has shut down the kiln line of its Sidheegram, Gujarat, cement plant for 17 – 20 days. India InfoLine News Service has reported that the company will carry out routine maintenance on the plant during the shutdown. It says that grinding and dispatch of cement will continue as usual.

Ghanaian local government suspends cement plant construction in Accra

Ghana: The district government of Shai-Osudoku in Accra has stopped the construction of an ‘illegal’ cement plant. The Daily Guide newspaper has reported that a China-based producer had been building the plant without a permit.

Jaiprakash Associates suspends operations at plants in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh due to coronavirus

India: Jaiprakash Associates has suspended operations at its cement plants in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh from 1 May 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. The company say it will continue maintenance activities of these plants during this time. It described the situation as ‘dynamic’ and plans to resume operations after ongoing analysis.

Loma Negra suspends production at Olavarría plant

07 December 2020

Argentina: A dispute between a supplier and its union has caused Loma Negra to switch off two kilns at its Olavarría cement plant. The Clarín newspaper has reported that the argument is between Minerar, which provides the plant’s raw limestone, and the Asociación Minera Obrera Argentina (AOMA), which represents miners’ interests. The union says that miners are underpaid. They receive US$245/yr less than cement plant workers.

The producer said, “It is the leading Argentine cement company, with approximately 45% of total sales in the country. This shortage will impact the country's economy, which had been recovering after the pandemic." The union rejected a mandatory conciliation on 3 December 2020. Negotiations began in October 2020.

Mawlamyine Cement suspends production due to limestone shortage

29 October 2020

Myanmar: Thailand-based Siam Cement Group (SCG) and Pacific Link Cement Industries (PLCI) joint-venture Mawlamyine Cement has suspended production at its integrated cement plant in Kyaikmayaw, Mon State amidst a dispute between its owners. SCG says it has resorted to arbitration to resolve the matter and that PLCA has filed a lawsuit against it. In a statement SCG said that, “MCL continues to work with distributors and customers to alleviate the supply shortage due to the temporary suspension.”
