Zementwerk Hatschek's Gmunden cement plant eliminates 3800t/yr of local CO2 emissions with WHR heating
24 January 2023Austria: Zementwerk Hatschek's Gmunden cement plant eliminated 3800t of CO2 emissions from its local area during 2022 through its contribution to municipal heating. Zementwerk Hatschek, a subsidiary of Rohrdorfer, heats local households using recovered heat from the Gmunden cement plant's waste heat recover (WHR) system.
A delegation of cement plant representatives and local officials from Baden-Württemberg, Germany, visited the plant to learn about its WHR and heat supply systems on 20 January 2022.
Plant manager Peter Fürhapter said "Municipal heating based on our waste heat contributes to CO2 reduction in Upper Austria, helping us to achieve our CO2 reduction goals under the Paris Climate Agreement." He added "We are pleased that with this forward-looking project we are a model for similar projects in Europe."
Savannah Cement to establish 2.92Mt/yr clinker plant in Kitui
12 December 2022Kenya: Savannah Cement has hired China-based Sinoma International Engineering for construction of its upcoming 2.92Mt/yr Kitui clinker plant in Eastern Province. The plant will additionally have a 900,000t/yr grinding unit, a 35MW fossil fuel-fired captive power plant and a 13MW waste heat recovery (WHR) system. Savannah Cement chair Benson Ndeta said that the plant will convert to 100% solar and WHR-powered production by the end of 2029.
Sinoma International Engineering plans to commence the project immediately, and to complete it in late 2024.
Bestway Cement is a Carbon Neutralisation Pioneer
28 November 2022Pakistan/UAE: China-based renewables supplier LONGi Green Energy Technology has awarded Bestway Cement its Carbon Neutralisation Pioneer award at a ceremony in Dubai, UAE. The award acknowledges progress in industrial sustainability during the past year. Bestway Cement is the first Pakistani recipient of the prize.
Bestway Cement operates 62MW-worth of solar power capacity at installations at its Chakwal, Farooqia, Hattar and Kallar Kahar cement plants. Managing director Irfan Sheikh said that this setup enables it to minimise CO2 emissions and the company's reliance on the national grid. Bestway Cement was also the first Pakistani cement producer to install waste heat recovery (WHR) plants across all of its integrated cement plants.
Ramco Cements to build second line at Haridaspur grinding plant
11 November 2022India: Ramco Cements has approved plants to build a second production line at its Haridaspur grinding plant in Jajpur District, Odisha with a capacity of 0.9Mt/yr. Around US$16m has been earmarked for the project. Once commissioned the plant’s total capacity will be 1.8Mt/yr.
The cement producer’s revenue grew by 31% year-on-year to US$442m in the first half of its financial year to 30 September 2022. However, its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell by 35% to US$61.9m. It blamed the loss in earnings on falling cement prices and mounting fuel costs. The company currently has cement and clinker production capacities of 21Mt/yr and 14Mt/yr respectively. It also reported that a 6MW waste heat recovery unit at its Kurnool plant in Andhra Pradesh will be commissioned in November 2022. An additional 6MW at the same plant is scheduled to start operation in March 2023.
Bestway Cement commissions Mianwali cement plant
21 October 2022Pakistan: Bestway Cement has ignited the 7200t/day kiln at its new Mianwali integrated cement plant in Punjab Province. The plant has 20MW of dedicated solar power capacity and 9MW of waste heat recovery (WHR) power capacity.
Ramco Cements commissions Kolumigundla cement plant
29 September 2022India: Ramco Cements has commissioned its new US$366m Kolumigundla cement plant in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool District. The Hindu Business Line News has reported that the plant has a clinker capacity of 2.25Mt/yr. It will be equipped with a 12.2MW waste heat recovery plant, 6MW-worth of which will be commissioned in October 2022, with the remainder to follow in 2023. A dedicated fossil fuel-fired power plant and 35km-long railway siding will follow some time in the 2024 financial year.
Makin Teguh and Borneo Oil mark firing up of kiln at ILPP cement plant
20 September 2022Malaysia: Makin Teguh and Borneo Oil have held a ceremony to mark the firing up of the kiln at the 0.23Mt/yr ILPP cement plant being built in Sabah. The new plant is next to a limestone quarry owned by Borneo Oil and it is set to further benefit from the oil company’s other limestone assets via long term supply contracts, according to the Borneo Post newspaper. Borneo Oil increased its stake in Makin Teguh to 38% in May 2022.
A China-based supplier has built the new plant. It includes a waste heat recovery (WHR) unit and it reportedly the first integrated cement plant in Malaysia to use alternative fuels such as heavy fuel oil derived from refined recovered oils, palm kernel shells and bio char.
Nuh Çimento to expand waste heat recovery unit at Hereke cement plant
16 September 2022Turkey: Nuh Çimento has applied for environmental clearance for the expansion of a waste heat recovery (WHR) unit at its Hereke cement plant in Marmara. En Kocaeli News has reported that the company seeks to expand the plant’s power capacity by 66% to 29.6MW from 17.7MW. The company estimates that the project will cost US$4.38m. Its construction will employ 50 people.
Birla Corporation aiming for 30Mt/yr cement production capacity by 2030
05 September 2022India: Birla Corporation plans to increase its cement production capacity to 30Mt/yr in 2030 from 20Mt/yr at present. It made the proclamation in its annual report for the 2021 – 2022 financial year. Recent developments include the inauguration of its 3.9Mt/yr integrated plant at Mukutban in Maharashtra, run under its RCCPL subsidiary. It is the group’s fourth integrated plant and is reportedly the largest single cement production line in the state. The unit also includes a 40MW captive power plant.
Other developments include plans to expand the capacity of its Kundanganj grinding plant in Uttar Pradesh to 3Mt/yr from 2Mt/yr and a plan to build a new 1.2Mt/yr grinding plant at Gaya in Bihar. The group is also increasing production from its captive coal mines. Output from the Sial Ghoghri coal mine has been increased by 20% above its rated capacity to 30,000t/month. Development of the Bikram coal mine has been advanced and production is expected to start in mid-2023. Finally, the group is adding 8MW of solar power capacity at its Chanderia, Satna and Kundanganj plants in the current financial year and a 10.6MW waste heat recovery (WHR) unit is planned for the Mukutban plant.
Lafarge Emirates Cement to install waste heat recovery plant at Fujairah cement plant
18 August 2022UAE: Lafarge Emirates Cement plans to install an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) waste heat recovery (WHR) plant at its Fujairah cement plant. Gulf News has reported that the producer will fund the upgrade through a transition trade facility provided by UK-based bank Standard Chartered. The facility is part of the bank’s planned US$300bn-worth of green finance funding up to 2030.
Lafarge Emirates Cement general manager Olivier Milhaud said “This is one of the major milestones in our journey towards sustainability. The WHR project encourages the use of clean and environmentally friendly energy in our operations and also supports our global mission to build a Net Zero world.”
