Anhui Conch raises profits in first half of 2025

China: Anhui Conch’s revenues fell by 9% year-on-year to US$5.77bn in the first half of 2025 from US$6.37bn in the same period in 2025. Its net profit grew by 32% to US$587m from US$445m. Its net sales of cement and clinker remained stable at 127Mt. The group said that despite facing “insufficient demand, intensified competition and volatile market conditions” it managed to improve its efficiency, reduce operation costs and expand its market. Notable cement sector achievements during the reporting period included signing a deal to buy selected assets from West China Cement in China, acquiring Conch West Papua Cement in Indonesia and completing a 5000t/day production line at Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

West China Cement to sell assets to Anhui Conch for US$230m

26 June 2025

China: West China Cement will sell Yili Yaobai Cement, Huocheng County Nangang Xixin Mining Industry and Xinjiang Baihang Environmental Protection Technology to Anhui Conch Cement and Conch (Shaanxi) for US$55m via its subsidiary Yaobai Special Cement Group, according to MT Newswires. It will also divest three additional assets for US$22.5m, US$128m and US$23.7m under separate agreements. The sales remain subject to board approval and other conditions.

Lemi cement plant begins production

30 September 2024

Ethiopia: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has inaugurated the Lemi National Cement Factory, built by a joint venture between West International Holding, the African arm of West China Cement, and East African Holding Company. With a production capacity of 15,000t/day, this facility is now reportedly the largest in Ethiopia, according to Xinhua news. Located 150km north of the capital city of Addis Ababa in the Lemi Building Materials Industrial Park, the project cost US$600m.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said "The project exemplifies the swift and efficient delivery of crucial infrastructure. Congratulations to all those involved in realising this important project, which now produces 50% of the cement made by plants across the country."

Ugandan government grants mining licence for West China Cement-related project

28 February 2024

Uganda: The government has granted a 21-year mining licence to Sunbird Resources to support a cement plant project near the border with Kenya. The licence will allow the local company, which is working with China-based West China Cement, to mine limestone, according to Reuters. The partners intend to build a 1Mt/yr integrated cement plant.

Lemi National Cement Factory preparing to start production in March 2024

Ethiopia: The Lemi National Cement Factory is preparing to start production. The 8Mt/yr plant is expected to be completed in March 2024, according to the Xinhua News Agency. China-based Sinoma International Engineering is building the unit. The US$600m project is a joint venture between West International Holding, a subsidiary West China Cement, and the East African Holding Company. The plant is located at the Lemi Building Materials Industrial Park around 150km north of Addis Ababa.

Lemi National Cement Factory’s 8Mt/yr plant on track for inauguration in early 2024

29 November 2023

Ethiopia: Lemi National Cement Factory’s construction of its upcoming Lemi cement plant is 70% complete and will conclude in time for inauguration of the plant on schedule in early 2024. Ethiopian News Agency has reported that construction of the 8Mt/yr plant’s preheater frames and rotary kilns finished on 28 November 2023. China-based Sinoma International Engineering is carrying out the project, which has a total cost of US$600m. Lemi National Cement Factory is a joint venture of local conglomerate East African Holding and West China Cement subsidiary West International Holding.

West China Cement raises sales in first half of 2023

China: West China Cement recorded sales of US$605m during the first quarter of 2023, up by 5.6% year-on-year from US$573m in the first half of 2022, Reuters has reported. Nonetheless, its net profit dropped by 19% to US$72.9m from US$90.6m.

Anjia Cement inaugurates Muhanga grinding plant

04 August 2023

Rwanda: West China Cement subsidiary Anjia Cement has inaugurated its Muhanga grinding plant at the Muhanga Industrial Park in Gitarama. Xinhua News Agency has reported that West China Cement invested US$50m in the plant's construction. It subsequently aims to raise its total investments in Rwanda to US$100m.

Rwanda Development Board chief executive officer Clare Akamanzi said "Over the past five years, we have registered investments from China worth close to US$1bn, which will collectively generate up to 25,000 jobs for Rwandans."

Fan Zhan appointed non-executive director of West China Cement

07 June 2023

China: The board of directors of West China Cement has approved the appointment of Fan Zhan as a non-executive director. Fan is a senior accountant and deputy head of finance at Anhui Conch Cement. He was previously head of finance at Anhui Tongling Conch Cement. He holds a graduate degree from Tongling University.

Fan Zhan replaces Wang Jingqian on West China Cement’s board of directors, following the latter’s resignation.

West China Cement's sales rise in 2022

28 March 2023

China: West China Cement recorded US$1.23bn in sales in 2022, up by 6% year-on-year from US$1.16bn in 2021. The producer's profit dropped by 23% to US$176m from US$230m.

Looking to the 2023 full year, West China Cement said that it expects demand in Guizhou and Xinjiang Provinces to 'remain subdued.' It noted upcoming infrastructure projects in Shaanxi Province as a source of substantial demand, but overall does not expect significant demand growth there. Meanwhile in Mozambique, the group expects its performance to remain unchanged.
