Eurasian Development Bank funds Kulanak hydropower plant and Kant cement plant expansion

Kyrgyzstan: The Eurasian Development Bank is financing the construction of the Kulanak hydropower Plant with a capacity of 100MW and a new clinker line at the Kant cement plant.

"The substantial growth in the bank's investment portfolio in Kyrgyzstan, which reached 61.6% of the investments planned in the country strategy for 2022-2026, reflects the bank's commitment to increasing its project activities in the region," said Nikolai Podguzov, Chairman of the EDB Board, during a meeting with Kyrgyzstan's Finance Minister, Almaz Baketaev.

Attock Cement launches new production line

Pakistan: Attock Cement has announced the successful completion of a new production line at its cement plant in Hub, Baluchistan. This additional line is capable of producing 1.28Mt/yr of cement and commenced operation on 16 April 2024.

Votorantim Cimentos launches new waste management and agricultural facility in Brazil

Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos has inaugurated its first unit in Brazil for Viter, its agricultural inputs business, and Verdera, its sustainable waste management business. Located in Itaperuçu, the unit comprises a new Verdera waste crushing plant and an agricultural limestone production line for Viter. This initiative is part of a US$785m investment programme.

Verdera's Itaperuçu facility has a capacity of 48,000t/yr, tripling its previous capability, and is equipped with technology for sustainable waste treatment. The waste processed at the plant will be converted into clean energy for cement production at Votorantim's plant in Rio Branco do Sul, using co-processing technology developed by Votorantim in Brazil in 1991. Viter's new line will increase agricultural limestone production in Paraná. The Itaperuçu plant, along with the existing Rio Branco do Sul unit, brings Viter's total capacity to 1.5Mt/yr of agricultural limestone in Paraná. The new plant features filters for emission control and utilises biomass as a renewable energy source.

Kant Cement launches new dry clinker line

25 March 2024

Kyrgyzstan: Kant Cement has entered the construction phase of a new dry clinker production line at its Kant cement plant. The facility has a capacity of 2500t/day and aims to produce 800,000t/yr of clinker using advanced technology and automation.

The plant will both substitute for imports and export excess cement. It is expected to generate 300 new jobs.

Eastern Province Cement awards Al Khursaniyah cement plant expansion contract to Sinoma CDI

08 January 2024

Saudi Arabia: Sinoma CDI says that it has won a contract with Eastern Province Cement for the construction of a new 10,000t/day line at the producer’s 3.5Mt/yr Al Khursaniyah cement plant. The new line will more than double the plant’s capacity to 7.15Mt/yr and cost US$271m, according to Mist News.

GCC to expand Odessa cement plant

07 December 2023

US: Mexico-based GCC has hired ThyssenKrupp Polysius North America to build a 3000t/day clinker production line at its Odessa plant in Texas. When commissioned in late 2025, the line is expected to more than double the plant’s clinker capacity to 2Mt/yr across three kilns. The supplier says the project will also lower the plant’s annual CO2 emissions by 13%.

GCC chief executive officer Enrique Escalante said "We remain strongly committed to delivering strong stakeholder value, while investing in the future growth of our business. With the expansion of the Odessa plant, we will ensure GCC is prepared for a new phase of the industry cycle."

Cahya Mata Sarawak to expand Kuching cement plant

Malaysia: Cahya Mata Sarawak has appointed China-based Sinoma Industry Engineering to provide technical consultancy services for an expansion and upgrade at its Kuching cement plant. Bernama Daily Malaysian News has reported that Sinoma Industry Engineering will help the producer to upgrade the plant’s 1Mt/yr Line 1 and build its planned 1.9Mt/yr Line 2.

Northern Region Cement Company to build 1.32Mt/yr cement line in Iraq

Iraq: Saudi Arabia-based Northern Region Cement Company has hired Germany-based KHD to build a 1.32Mt/yr cement line in Iraq. Reuters has reported the value of the contract as US$139m. The supplier said that the project will last for 16 months from its date of commencement.

China Energy International Group Samarkand Cement installs kiln at upcoming Samarkand cement plant

02 October 2023

Uzbekistan: China Energy International Group Samarkand Cement has installed a 3Mt/yr kiln at its upcoming Samarkand cement plant. Local press has reported that the kiln is the largest at a cement plant in Uzbekistan. The Samarkand plant will cost US$313m to build. Parent company China Energy and the government of Uzbekistan previously indicated that construction would conclude in 2024. The plant will produce ordinary Portland cement (OPC) of the local designations M-400 and M-500. It will use coal as fuel in its cement production and directly employ 500 people.

GCC orders pyroprocessing equipment from ThyssenKrupp Polysius for Odessa cement plant expansion

US: GCC has ordered pyroprocessing equipment from ThyssenKrupp Polysius for the expansion of its Odessa cement plant in Texas. The upgrade will more than double the plant’s capacity to 1.9Mt/yr, and reduce its CO2 emissions by 13%. Contractor H&M Construction says that the project will be the third on which it has collaborated on design and construction.

H&M Vice President Casey Rushing said “H&M is proud to have the opportunity to serve GCC as its design-builder on this great project. H&M has a very strong active presence in Texas and a very strong veteran self-perform team that has recently completed with Polysius a near identical pyroprocessing expansion in the Southeast US. We intend to improve on our successes from our previous pyroprocessing lines by executing this project for GCC with superior safety, quality and customer satisfaction.”
