France: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Lafarge France says that it will continue to provide its regular service to customers as operations continue into a second national coronavirus lockdown in 2020. This was made possible by the government’s decision to permit the continuation of construction and industrial activities, according to the company.
It said, “The company has learned a lot since the containment last spring and is prepared to guarantee the best possible service for all of its markets, even under the specific conditions linked to the acceleration of the Covid-19 epidemic. All activities - cements, concretes and aggregates - will therefore operate normally throughout the country.” It added, “All our sites are now showing sufficient stock levels to deal calmly with the coming months.”
Lucky Cement praises government for ending lockdown on exports
04 November 2020Pakistan: Lucky Cement chief executive officer (CEO) Muhammed Ali Tabba has praised the government’s decision to lift coronavirus lockdown restrictions on the export of products. As a result, he predicted that the rate of export growth would increase in 2020. The Balochistan Times newspaper has reported that Tabba also welcomed the end of restrictions on construction, and thanked the State Bank of Pakistan for subsidising payrolls during the on-going national coronavirus lockdown and the Ministry of Finance for releasing business refunds quickly.
Tabba said, “The country has benefited greatly from the way the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has won the war against a pandemic like Covid-19.”
Ramco Cements publishes first-half 2021 financial year results
03 November 2020India: Ramco Cements recorded sales of US$301m in the first half of the 2021 financial year, down by 15% year-on-year from US$354m in the first half of the 2020 financial year. Its profit was US$46.4m, down by 4% from US$48.4m.
The company said, “Business operations were severely disrupted during April 2020 in view of lockdown imposed by the government due to Covid-19. After relaxation of restrictions by the Government, business recovered gradually and is continuing with weak demand, especially in urban/semi-urban markets. The company continues to comply with the various operating guidelines issued by the relevant regulatory authorities from time to time. As per the current assessment of the company, there is no material impact on the carrying values of trade receivables, inventories and other financial/non-financial assets.”
India: Cement production fell by 18% year-on-year to 209Mt in the first nine months of 2020 from 255Mt in the same period in 2019. Data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry shows that production in the third quarter of 2020 dropped by 11% year-on-year to 69Mt from 78Mt. Monthly production has consistently fallen year-on-year since March 2020 when coronavirus-related lockdown measures started.
Cemex reports 4% nine-month sales fall so far in 2020
28 October 2020Mexico: Cemex’s net sales in the first nine months of 2020 were US$9.43bn, down by 4% year-on-year from US$9.87bn in the corresponding period of 2019. Operating earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) was US$1.82bn, in line with the first nine months of 2019. Cement volumes fell by 2% to 46.2Mt from 47.2Mt. The group said that sales volumes increased in most regions in the third quarter of 2020 as economies began to reopen following the Covid-19 lockdown.
Fernando A González, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Cemex said, “We are pleased with our performance in the third quarter in which all regions participated in earnings recovery. Indeed, during the quarter, we experienced EBITDA recovery from the second quarter decline, due to Covid-19, as well as strong year-over-year growth. Operation Resilience played a key role in this performance.”
Suez Cement publishes first half 2020 results
08 September 2020Egypt: HeidelbergCement subsidiary Suez Cement recorded a net loss of Euro38.0m in the first half of 2020, up by 99% year-on-year from 19.1m in the first half of 2019. The company made sales worth Euro145m over the period, down by 18% from Euro177m. The causes of the decline were market saturation and reduced demand in the short term due to the coronavirus lockdown from 19 March 2020 to 27 June 2020.
India: JK Cement’s profit in the three months ended 30 June 2020, the first quarter of the 2021 financial year, was US$6.85m, down by 62% year-on-year from US$18.1m in the first quarter of the 2020 financial year. Revenues fell by 28% to US$138m from US$191m. The company said, “The operations and business performance of the group during the quarter ended 30 June 2020 was adversely impacted by the shutdown of the group's plants at various locations due to the lockdown announced by the government after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.”
FLSmidth reinstates 2020 guidance
28 August 2020Denmark: FLSmidth has announced the reinstatement of its 2020 guidance. The guidance predicts full-year sales of Euro2.28bn, down by 18% year-on-year from Euro2.77bn. Earnings before taxation, interest, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) margin is expected to decline to 6.0% from 8.1%. The company said that the guidance is “subject to higher uncertainty than usual” and conditional upon “no further escalation of Covid-19, no further extensive lockdowns or travel restrictions occurring before year-end, a gradual improvement in business sentiment for the remainder of 2020, and business improvement implementation of around Euro28.2m, of which Euro18.8m relate to the previously communicated improvement activities and around Euro9.40m relate to further improvement activities in cement.” It added, “The cement industry has been severely impacted, and the timing and extent of a rebound remain uncertain. Our goal for the cement business is to generate more stable, higher-margin earnings.”
Cahya Mata Sarawak’s profit slips in first half of 2020
27 August 2020Malaysia: Cahya Mata Sarawak recorded a profit of US$8.72m in the first half of 2020, down by 63% year-on-year from US$23.4m in the first half of 2019. Total sales declined by 40% to US$117m from US$196m. Cement sales also declined, by 31% to US$46.8m from US$68.1m. The company attributed this to the impacts of the coronavirus lockdown.
China: Anhui Conch Cement has recorded a profit of US$2.33bn in the first half of 2020, up by 5.3% year-on-year from US$2.21bn in the first half of 2019. Revenues rose by 3.3% to US$10.7bn from US$10.4bn. The company attributed the increases to the resumption of construction across Asia after the coronavirus lockdown and increase sales in western China throughout the period.
