Bedeschi wins innovation award from Smau
27 March 2018Italy: Bedeschi has won an innovation award from Smau. The award was given to the bulk materials handling systems manufacturer for its use of virtual and augmented reality to display its products to customers at trade fairs. Bedeschi has worked with Airlapp to create 3D models and virtual reality simulations to allow it to visualise its models. Together the companies have used a smartphone app, Regiverse, to presents tours of its models that can be used on both Android and Apple iOS platforms.
LafargeHolcim cement plants in the US awarded Energy Star
09 February 2018US: Two LafargeHolcim US cement plants have been awarded the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star award. The EPA recognised the Holly Hill plant in South Carolina and the Devil’s Slide plant in Morgan, Utah.
“Receiving the Energy Star award this year at two sites is an affirmation of the hard work all our employees are devoting every day to meeting our environmental goals,” said John Stull, chief executive officer (CEO), US Cement.
This recognition is the eighth time the EPA has awarded both the Holly Hill and Devil’s Slide plants with the Energy Star award since 2009.
UK: Fairport Engineering has been awarded a corporate social responsibility rating. The accreditation provides a measure of the engineering company’s corporate citizenship and its business practices. In the cement sector Fairport offers a number of systems including materials handling, bulk raw material intake and processing to clinker grinding, and blending, cement storage, packing and palletising.
Sinoma wins Luban Prize for Devnya project
09 November 2017Bulgaria/China: Sinoma has won the Luban Prize for its work on the Devnya Cement Plant in Bulgaria. The company won the award for building a 4000t/day clinker production line at the site operated by Italcementi and now owned by HeidelbergCement. The Luban Prize, initiated in 1987, is an award for quality in Chinese construction projects.
Aumund India wins award from FLSmidth
19 October 2017India: Aumund Engineering has received an award for ‘delivery excellence and dedicated support in meeting on-time delivery’ from FLSmidth. The award was part of an initiative to congratulate suppliers that successfully met delivery requirements and quality standards in 2016. A certificate marking the achievement was issued at a suppliers meeting held in Chennai, India.
Winners from Buzzi Unicem, Ash Grove Cement and Salt Rivers Materials announced in PCA’s 2017 John P Gleason Jr Leadership Awards
01 September 2017US: The Portland Cement Association (PCA) has announced the winners of the 2017 John P Gleason Jr Leadership Awards, honouring individuals who have exhibited leadership in association activities in support of member company objectives and operations. The awards will be presented at the PCA’s Fall Congress in Chicago.
Daniel Nugent, Senior Vice President, Technical Services and Government Affairs, Buzzi Unicem USA won the award for Business Continuity for his leadership role in industry regulatory and legislative initiatives, including greenhouse gas emissions and other significant issues that impact cement manufacturing operations. He serves on a variety of PCA committees, including the Energy and Environment Committee and Government Affairs Council. Finalists for this award included Hamid Farzam, Vice President of Technical Services and Quality Assurance for Cemex USA and Steve Regis, Senior Vice President of Corporate Services for CalPortland Company.
Matthew Wood, Sustainable Products and Promotion Manager, Ash Grove Cement Company, won the award for Market Development for the promotion of cement-based products at the national and local level, such as roller-compacted concrete and full-depth reclamation paving solutions. He is also a member of the PCA’s Sustainable Development Committee and LEED Accredited Professional. Finalists for this award included David Gray, Market Manager for GCC of America and Larry Rowland, Manager of Marketing and Technical Services for Lehigh Hanson.
Ruben Guerrero Jr, Director of Corporate Affairs, Salt River Materials Group won the award for Young Leaders for his active engagement in the PCA’s network of public policy and communications committees, including the Government Affairs Council, Industry Communications Committee and State Government Affairs Task Force. Finalists for this award included Desirea Haggard, Environmental Manager, CalPortland Company and William Kissel, Senior Environmental Manager, Titan America.
Germany: Lechler has won third prize at the Baden-Württemberg Environmental Technology Award 2017. The nozzle and spray system manufacturer entered the ‘Technology for the Reduction, Treatment and Separation of Emissions’ category with its VarioClean - NOx denitrification system.
US: Cemex USA says it invested over US$50m in 2016 on projects and improvements in cement plant operations and other facilities to help reduce environmental impact and conserve nearby wildlife. Four cement plants - Brooksville, Miami, Clinchfield and Victorville - achieved the Energy Star Certification from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 2017. In 2016 all active Cemex cement plants in the US achieved the Wildlife Habitat Council's Conservation Certification, and several sites in California are currently working to attain that goal.
In May 2017 the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department awarded Cemex the 2017 Lone Star Land Steward Award for the Trans Pecos Ecoregion for its on-going commitment to sustainability and land stewardship at the El Carmen Nature Reserve. The company also received the Wildlife Habitat Council's Gold Tier Program of the Year for work at El Carmen in 2016. Other environmental initiatives by the company also include wildlife conservation efforts at various quarries in California.
Mondi wins three Paper Shipping Sack Manufacturers’ Association awards for plant safety
15 June 2017US: Three Mondi Industrial Bags plants in North America have won awards for plant safety from the Paper Shipping Sack Manufacturers’ Association (PSSMA). The winning plants were Louisville in Kentucky, Arcadia in Louisiana and Salt Lake City in Utah. The Arcadia and Louisiana plants also achieved zero incidents rates in 2016. The awards were presented at the organisation’s seminar in Vancouver, Washington in April 2017.
US: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded CalPortland with a 2017 Energy Star Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award for energy efficiency achievements. CalPortland’s accomplishments will be recognized by the EPA and the Department of Energy in Washington, DC on 26 April 2017.
Its key 2016 accomplishments include a reduction of its energy intensity by 1.1% in 2016 compared to business as usual in 2015 which resulted in over US$682,000 in savings and a reduction of 14,234Mt of CO2. The company initiated a new ‘CalPortland Energy Cup’ competition that compares and quantifies energy practices and performance of its three cement plants. All three CalPortland cement plants scored in the top quartile of the Energy Performance Indicators (EPI) benchmarking tool. The Rillito plant has been certified for the past five years in a row.
CalPortland has also completed several large energy saving projects including the installation of a new US$9m clinker cooler at the Rillito cement plant, a US$14m Anchorage terminal storage dome and a US$2m preheater duct replacement at the Mojave cement plant.
