Portland Cement Association names 2020 Safety Innovation Awards winners

US: The Portland Cement Association (PCA) has announced the winners of the 2020 Safety Innovation Awards. The awards recognise ‘creative safety-enhancing projects in the cement industry’ across five categories.

Buzzi Unicem USA’s Joliet, Illinois cement terminal won the distribution award for its barge entry ladder, which reduced fall hazards associated with unloading cement from barges. Ash Grove Cement’s Durkee, Oregon cement plant won the general facility award for its burner pipes cart upgrade, which reduced safety hazards associated with moving cement kiln burner pipes. Further hazard reductions were made by Buzzi Unicem USA’s Chattanooga, Tennessee cement plant’s finish mill access platform and the Monarch Cement Company’s Humboldt, Kansas cement plant’s noise reduction upgrade, which jointly won the milling/grinding award. The pyroprocessing award went to GCC of America’s Pueblo, Colorado plant for its semi-automated clinker feeding system, while the quarry award went to Ash Grove Cement’s Louisville, Nebraska plant for its dump box hardened material extraction tool.

PCA president and chief executive officer (CEO) Michael Ireland said, “Our industry prioritises the safety of its employees above all else. We are proud of our members’ efforts to pursue excellence in safety innovation for their company and their colleagues.”

Semen Indonesia is triple winner at Nusantara Corporate Social Responsibility Awards 2020

Indonesia: The La Tofi School of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has named Semen Indonesia as the winner in three categories at the Nusantara CSR Awards 2020. Indonesia Government News has reported that the three categories are: Health and Economic Assistance for Emergency Management of Covid-19, Leaders Inspiring CSR Practices and Community Involvement in Handling Waste.

General manager of CSR Edy Saraya said that the Covid-19 outbreak requires “integrated countermeasures, including the involvement of all components of society.” He added, “Through the programme implemented, we hope to help prevent and control the spread of Covid-19 and to be able to accelerate the implementation of (health protocol) adaptation of new habits. Especially for those affected by the pandemic, it can improve the economy of the community and the environment around the operational area."

ICAP and ICMAP announce Best Corporate Report Award Cement 2020 winners

Pakistan: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP) and the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMAP) have named Maple Leaf Cement the winner of Best Corporate Report Award Cement 2020 for its company coverage.

ICAP and ICMAP said, “The objective of corporate reporting is to be easily understood by all the stakeholders as well as showing utmost transparency. Considering these golden rules, Maple Leaf Cement, which has always accepted corporate accountability being its primary goal, is the best in category.”

Lucky Cement won runner up for the award.

Cemex wins Wildlife Habitat Council’s Corporate Conservation Leadership Award 2020

US: The Wildlife Habitat Council has named Cemex USA the winner of the Corporate Conservation Leadership Award 2020. The award signifies “an exemplary corporate commitment to biodiversity and conservation education, and meaningful alignments with global conservation objectives.”

Director of Sustainability Vicente Saiso said, “We are privileged to receive the Corporate Conservation Leadership Award from the Wildlife Habitat Council. This recognition is testimony to our successful efforts and fosters our commitment to continue embedding sustainability in every aspect of our operations. To date, we have achieved certification for 30 programmes and community environmental initiatives in our operations around the world, with the highest standards of environmental conservation and biodiversity restoration.”

Projects include collaborations in the US and further afield with the California State Wildlife Action Plan, the Friends of Verde River Cooperative Invasive Plant Management Plan, BirdLife International, the El Carmen Nature Reserve Action Programme and a black bear research initiative, as well as the Mexican Strategy for Chihuahuan Grasslands Conservation, the Dominican Republic National Annual Plan and Panama's Alliance for a Million Hectares.

FLACEMA announces sustainable development communication prize shortlist

02 October 2020

Spain: The Andalusian Labour Foundation for Cement and the Environment (FLACEMA) has announced the shortlist for the Award for the Best Communication on Sustainable Development in the Andalusian Cement Industry 2019 - 2020. The jury will select a winner from 19 articles by 13 writers, published between 1 January 2019 and 31 May 2020, taking into account “aspects such as the journalistic quality of the piece, its rigour and provision of data, the sources consulted and the investigativeness of the work” in highlighting the regional cement industry’s commitment to “principles such as sustainable development and the circular economy.”

FLACEMA said, “Due to Covid-19, 2019 – 2020 presents a novel situation. As such, the jury has especially taken into account those works on sustainable development in the industry that address initiatives designed to combat the outbreak.”

The jury announces the winner of the Euro2000 prize and runner-up for the Euro1000 prize on 1 November 2020.

Lucky Cement wins Pakistan’s Most Outstanding Cement Company 2020

Pakistan: Asiamoney has named Lucky Cement as most outstanding in the cement producers category of Pakistan’s Most Outstanding Company 2020 following a national poll. The Pakistan Observer newspaper has reported that “the aim of this poll is to identify and give recognition to Asia's most outstanding listed companies in each market and sector.”

Krasnoyarsk Cement workers awarded Russian state honours

16 September 2020

Russia: Three workers at Krasnoyarsk Cement and its associated company Sibcemservice have been awarded the title of ‘Honoured Builder of the Russian Federation’ by the central state government. Excavator driver Mikhail Yelkin, grinding workshop supervisor Valentina Trofimova and turner Stepan Grishechko have been issued with the honourary titles for their long service with the company of over 30 years and help in mentoring new employees.

Energy Star 2020 for two Cementos Argos Plants

US: Grupo Argos subsidiary Cementos Argos has said that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded Energy Stars to its 1.1Mt/yr Harleyville, South Carolina cement plant and its 1.7Mt/yr Roberta, Alabama cement plant. This signifies that both plants are in the top 25% of US integrated cement plants for energy efficiency.

Legal and sustainability vice president María Isabel Echeverri said, “We are delighted to be granted again these certifications, which reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and to give value to our society. The responsible use of energy is an essential pillar of our company and we work every day in the development and implementation of technologies that enable efficient use and strategic management of this resource.”

Cementos Argos is Colombia’s fourth most innovative company

Colombia: The National Association of Entrepreneurs and Dinero Magazine have named Cementos Argos fourth among 242 of Colombia’s most innovative companies. Chief executive officer (CEO) Juan Esteban Calle said, “This recognition fills us with pride and motivates us to continue to advance. We are convinced that it is possible to help materialise more dreams of housing and a better infrastructure for millions of people.”

SLK Cement is Sverdlovsk’s Best Taxpayer of the Year 2019

Russia: The Ministry of Finance of Sverdlovsk Oblast has named Buzzi Unicem subsidiary SLK Cement amongst the winners of Best Taxpayer of the Year 2019, an award that recognises commercial contributions to the regional economy by taxpaying in order to “raise the profile of companies and increase their role in the socio-economic development of the territory.” SLK Cement paid US$23.0m in taxes in 2019, up by 2.4% year-on-year from US$22.5m in 2019.

General director Andrey Immoreev said, “Honesty and compliance with the law are one of the key values of the Buzzi Unicem business code, in accordance with which we work. In our activities, we strictly follow the legal norms in the field of labour protection, industrial, fire, sanitary and epidemiological, environmental safety, taxes and Gosudarstvenii Standart (GOST) and international cement quality standard regulations, as well as retaining a customer focus in the company. In addition, despite the external factors associated with the coronavirus pandemic, we confidently continue to implement investment projects to modernise production equipment and provide assistance to the territories in which we are present.”
