Chilean cement despatches grow by 5% to 306Mt so far in 2019

Chile: Data from the Chilean Construction Chamber shows that cement despatches grew by 5% year-on-year to 3.06Mt in the nine months to the end of September 2019 from 2.91Mt in the same period in 2018. The country reported annual cement despatches of 3.99Mt in 2018, a similar figure to 2017.

Environmental clearance granted for Melón’s grinding plant at Punta Arenas

Chile: The Servicio de Evaluación Ambiental (SEA), the country’s environmental body, has approved the environmental impact assessment for a new 0.5Mt/yr grinding plant that Melón is planning to build in Punta Arenas. The unit will have an investment of US$45m, according to the Diario Financiero newspaper. Spain’s Cemengal will supply the mill for the project.

Cbb inaugurates cement grinding plant in Arica

Chile: Cbb, formerly known as Cementos Bío Bío, has inaugurated a new 0.2Mt/yr cement grinding plant at Arica. The unit had an investment of US$20m, according to the Diario Financiero newspaper. It is the company’s fifth plant in the country. As part of Cbb’s expansion strategy to target Peru, the new plant may double its production capacity in the future. The cement producer is also planning to build a US$20m plant at the Port of Matarani near Arequipa in Peru for a scheduled commission date in 2020.

Cementos Bío Bío rebrands as Cbb

Chile: Cementos Bío Bío has changed its name to Cbb as as part of a rebranding exercise to target the group for the digital age and to target growth outside of Chile. Chief executive officer (CEO) Enrique Elsaca said that the change is part of the company’s Transforma 2021 plan, including investment of US$150m in Chile, Argentina and Peru, according to the El Mercurio newspaper.

It is about to inaugurate a cement grinding plant at Arica in Chile, it plans to build a US$20m plant at Arequipa in Peru for commissionoing in early 2020 and it plans to upgrade its San Juan lime plant in Argentina. It also hopes to build a new lime plant in northern Argentina to supply the lithium business.

Melón profit rises in 2018

18 February 2019

Chile: Cementos Melón ended 2018 with a 9% growth in profits to US$13.7m. Its net income rose by 4.5% to US$289m. Its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell by 2.9% to US$43.2m.

Cementos Bío Bío to build grinding plant in Peru

29 January 2019

Peru: Chile’s Cementos Bío Bío plans to build a US$20m grinding plant at the Port of Matarani near Arequipa. The cement producer has all the necessary permits in place and it intends to open the unit in the first half of 2020, according to the Diario Financiero newspaper. Spain’s Cemengal will supply a Plug & Grind mill for the project. The plant will have a production capacity of 0.2Mt/yr, although there are plans to double this if the market supports it.

Cemengal confirmed as mill supplier for Cementos Melón’s grinding plant at Punta Arenas

Chile: Spain’s Cemengal has been confirmed as the supplier of a mill for Cementos Melón’s grinding plant at Punta Arenas. The unit will use a Plug & Grind Xtreme modular grinding plant. The contract includes all the mechanical, electrical and automation equipment required for a 0.3Mt/yr modular ball mill and a classifier. Cemengal will deliver the mill by the end of 2019 to allow first cement and commissioning of the plant in the first quarter of 2020.

Cementos Polpaico blames loss in 2018 on electricity costs

29 January 2019

Chile: Cementos Polpaico has blamed a loss of US$3.2m in 2018 on changing an electricity supply contract. Changing the contract to move to a new supplier, Colbún, led to a negative financial impact of around US$12.5m. Its sales rose by 23% year-on-year to US$249m in 2018 from US$202m in 2017. Its sales volumes of cement grew by 10% to 1.35Mt from 1.23Mt. Despite the overall loss its earnings before interest taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased by 51% to US$18.7m from US$12.4m.

FCT Combustion wins kiln conversion contract in Chile

08 January 2019

Chile: FCT Combustion has been awarded a kiln conversion project by an unnamed cement company. The project is a conversion of an existing direct-fired rotary kiln into a state of the art indirect-fired kiln using pulverised coal. Delivery for material is scheduled by April 2019 and for it to be commissioned by October 2019.

FCT is responsible for the complete engineering and procurement supply, including the following main equipment: coal bag filter; process ID fan; fire and explosion detection and suppression; coal dosing; multi fuel burner for coal, natural gas and fuel oil; motorised burner trolley; coal pneumatic conveying; primary air fan; emergency cooling; automatic ignition; flame monitoring; and fuel oil pumps and valve train. The project targets are low NOx emissions, better kiln operation and stability and improved fuel consumption.

Grupo Polpaico signs renewable energy deal with Colbún

02 January 2019

Chile: Colbún has signed a deal with Grupo Polpaico to supply the cement producer with 183GWhr/yr of renewable energy for a 10 year period. Cementos Polpaico will start using renewable energy at its Cerro Blanco integrated plant and its Coronel cement grinding plant in 2019 to allow energy efficiency upgrades to be implemented. Other plants in the group’s portfolio will start using the renewable energy supply by 2022.
