Menzel Elektromotoren supplies new motor to Algerian cement plant
05 September 2024Algeria: Germany-based motor manufacturer Menzel Elektromotoren supplied a fan motor for an Algerian cement plant. According to the company, the replacement was for a failed slip ring motor, and was manufactured and delivered within 13 weeks. The motor was a MEBSSL-type 6-pole slip ring motor in frame size 630, with a rated output of 1950kW, an operating voltage of 11,000V and a rated torque of 18,754Nm.
Canada: Finland-based Wärtsilä will provide a hybrid-electric propulsion system for an 11,000t-capacity limestone carrier, commissioned by CSL Group with China-based CCCC Shanghai Equipment Engineering and Jingjiang Nanyang Shipbuilding. The order supports CSL Group’s decarbonisation strategy by optimising engine and battery load and reducing fuel consumption.
The vessel is scheduled for delivery to CSL Group in 2026 and will initially operate on a hybrid diesel and battery system, transitioning to full electric power by 2031 to reduce carbon emissions by 90%, according to CSL Group. Wärtsilä will supply the whole hybrid electric propulsion system, including generators, DC hub, energy management system, main propulsion e-motors, bow thruster e-motors and battery solution.
The director of Electrical & Power Systems at Wärtsilä Marine, Torsten Büssow, said "Wärtsilä is committed to making decarbonised shipping possible, so we are delighted to be supporting CSL with solutions that enhance the sustainability of their fleet. This is a short sea shipping vessel that will operate with a lot of manoeuvring and variable load profiles, and electrification and hybridisation systems are the most efficient for such vessels."
India: Oriana Power has received an order for a 40MWp solar power plant in Rajasthan from a cement producer. The project is valued at US$18m. Oriana will provide engineering, procurement and construction, alongside the commissioning, operation and maintenance of the plant. The plant is scheduled for commissioning in April 2025, with a subsequent operation and maintenance period of 25 years.
WEG to supply transformers for St Marys Cement plant
16 July 2024Canada: WEG will supply the substation of Votorantim Cimentos North America’s St Marys Cement plant in Bowmanville, Ontario with its transformers. The order includes four transformers with capacities of 20MVA and 25MVA and voltage levels of 43.8/4.16kV. Sales and engineering teams from Brazil collaborated with VJ Pamensky Canada, the exclusive distributor of WEG in Canada, on the project.
India: Roofsol Energy has won a contract to supply solar power plants with a total capacity of 10.5MW for Shree Cement in Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, Saur Energy News has reported.
Roofsol Energy said “Shree Cement owns and operates cement grinding units in nine locations across India and owns production facilities in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka and has operations in India and UAE. The company carries out power generation through waste heat recovery plants and now it is adopting solar plants as well.”
Adbri orders new limestone carrier
20 December 2023Australia: Adbri has entered into an agreement to obtain a new limestone carrier for its South Australian cement operations, to replace its MV Accolade II vessel currently in operation there. Specifically, the new carrier will supply raw materials for the Birkenhead cement plant. It is 100% battery electric capable. Adbri has hired marine transport company CSL to supply and operate the vessel. The contract will last until 2043, with the option for two five-year extensions.
Adbri chief executive officer Mark Irwin said “The new vessel will support Adbri to increase cement volumes at Birkenhead, while also supporting the production of lower carbon products such as EvoCem cement, which uses limestone as a clinker substitute.” He continued “The new vessel is expected to start operations with a hybrid system, where electric power will replace about 25% of its diesel fuel. This is expected to reduce Scope 1 emissions by about 40% compared to the current emission intensity seen in the Accolade II operation. By 2031, we aim to achieve 100% electric power capability, further reducing Scope 1 emissions to less than 10% of the current emission intensity seen in the Accolade II operation. This milestone is a crucial step forward in our on-going net zero emission journey.”
Nexe Group orders software from Rockwell Automation
10 October 2023Croatia: Nexe Group has ordered a suite of software products from US-based Rockwell Automation to digitise production processes, reduce energy usage and increase production. It will use the FactoryTalk Analytics Pavilion8 software together with performance-management dashboards based on the ThingWorx IIoT platform, part of the FactoryTalk InnovationSuite, supplied by PTC
The software architecture to be deployed at Nexe was formulated by data science teams from Rockwell Automation and subsidiary Kalypso. The Pavilion8 model predictive control (MPC) product sits on top of automation systems and continuously assesses current and predicted operational data. It then compares this data to desired results, and drives new control targets to reduce process variability, improve performance and boost efficiency.
Danijel Koren, plant manager at Nexe’s integrated cement plant at Našice said “This is a push forward on this important journey for the whole group. We are looking to link all systems together and put operational data in the hands of people who can make a difference. Early results point to real success in terms of savings and efficiency; indeed, we are predicting a payback period of less than a year.”
Maerz to supply lime kiln for UNACEM
30 August 2023Peru: Switzerland-based Maerz has received an order from UNACEM (Unión Andina de Cementos) to supply a 600t/day PFR lime kiln. The kiln will be built and operated jointly at Tarma by UNACEM and Mexico-based lime producer Calidra Group. UNACEM already runs its integrated Condorcocha cement plant in Tarma. The supplier says that the kiln will be ready to install future CO2 capture technologies due to airtight sealed charging and discharging systems. It will also save up to 20% of electrical energy compared to conventional rotary piston blowers by using high-pressure fans to provide the process air.
Planning is underway for the project and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Maerz’ scope of supply will include the petroleum coke firing system, skip winch, charging and discharging systems, high-pressure fans, hydraulic unit and control system. According to the schedule, commissioning should take place in the first half of 2025.
Indonesia: Sweden-based Bruks Siwertell has received an order for two 10 000 S road-mobile ship unloaders for use in cement handling in Sumatra. The new road-mobile units are scheduled for delivery later in 2023 and will support a cement handling capacity of 300t/hr, discharging vessels up to 10,000dwt. Jörgen Ojeda, Bruks Siwertell’s Sales Director Mobile Unloaders, said that the two road-mobile models would add to a range of Siwertell screw-type dry bulk handling systems already delivered to the region including four large-scale Siwertell ship unloaders and one ship loader.
Vietnam government issues directive over management of state assets in the construction industry
28 July 2023Vietnam: The government has directed state-owned businesses, including Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem), to take measures to mitigate potential losses of state assets in construction. The Vietnam Investment Review newspaper has reported that a recent audit concluded that companies' equitisation processes created scope for such losses within the sector.
