Spain: Çimsa has invested €4.2m in launching a solar photovoltaic power plant to power its white cement plant in Buñol, Valencia. The solar plant has a capacity of 7.2MW and will supply about 18% of the energy needs for the cement plant.

The facility features 11,000 solar panels spread over 100,000m². This new solar power plant is expected to produce approximately 12GWh/yr of electricity, reducing CO₂ emissions by about 3000t/yr.

Europe: Cementir Group launched D-Carb, a 15% reduced-CO₂ white cement, in Europe on 24 April 2024. The producer says that D-Carb cement maintains the early-age performance of its Aalborg White high early strength white cement, while helping builders to conform to the highest sustainability certifications. D-Carb cement achieves its emissions reduction without diminishing the product’s brightness. Following this, Cementir Group plans to roll out D-Carb cement across its global markets.

Group product development manager Stefano Zampaletta said "Performance and the white colour are key features of D-Carb, and exploring suitable raw materials and their combinations have been crucial in the product assessment. This has resulted in the accurate selection of pure, very light limestone from a stable source, which improves and stabilises the whiteness. Additionally, leveraging limestone fineness and particle size distribution, D-Carb ensures enhanced and consistent rheology, ideal for wet-cast applications, such as self-compacting concrete. These distinctive rheological properties allow for concrete finishes that resemble marble surfaces. Moreover, the enhanced synergy and compatibility between cement and admixture cater to a wide range of white cement applications."

Chief sales, marketing and commercial development officer Michele Di Marino said "We are thrilled to introduce D-Carb, our new umbrella brand for lower carbon cements, as part of Cementir Group’s ongoing commitment to address environmental challenges and climate change. India: UltraTech Cement sold 27.3Mt of cement during the third quarter of the 2024 financial year, up by 6% year-on-year from third-quarter levels in the previous financial year. 26.1Mt (95%) of sales were in India, representing a 5% year-on-year rise in UltraTech Cement’s domestic sales. Throughout the quarter, the company produced 25.4Mt of grey cement and 480,000t of white cement, Press Trust of India News has reported.

UltraTech Cement’s 23 cement plants, one clinker plant and 29 grinding plants commanded an installed capacity of 138Mt/yr on 1 January 2024.

Egypt: Abu Dhabi Ports Group subsidiary Transcargo International (TCI) is building a bulk cement terminal at Arish port in North Sinai Governorate. The company says that the facility will be equipped with six 10,000t cement silos. Four silos will store up to 40,000t of grey cement, while two will store up to 20,000t/yr of white cement. Cementir Holding subsidiary Sinai White Portland Cement has signed a cooperation agreement with TCI to use the Arish cement terminal. TCI says that the terminal will serve multiple markets worldwide and help Sinai White Portland Cement to raise its total export volumes, thereby also raising its competitiveness.

TCI’s CEO Mohamed El Ahwal said "This project aligns with our commitment to support Egyptian exports by providing specialised logistics solutions across several industries. Building and operating Egypt’s first bulk cement terminal, we anticipate cost savings for cement producers in Egypt, making prices more competitive globally and increasing global market penetration."

South Korea/Egypt: The South Korean government plans to implement a 72% import duty on white cement from Egypt. Yonhap News has reported that the Korea Trade Commission (KTC) recommended the duty as an anti-dumping measure, following its investigation into the impacts of Egyptian imports on the South Korean white cement industry. This consists of Union Corporation’s 200,000t/yr Chongju white cement plant in North Chungcheong.

South Korea consumed 100,000t of white cement in 2022. Egyptian white cement commanded a 10% (10,000t) market share. The domestic cement industry complained to the KTC against Royal El Minya Cement and Albatros International Cement Trading in March 2023. An additional probe will now follow to assess the correct rate for the duty.

Germany: Dyckerhoff has launched Dyckerhoff Weiss Blue Star, a pozzolanic white cement CEM IV/A (P) 42.5 R product. It was approved by the German cement association, the VDZ, in mid-June 2023 and is now being manufactured at the Amöneburg plant. The lower CO₂ credentials of the new product have been promoted as it releases around 15% less CO₂ compared to CEM I cements. It is also notable for being a blended white cement.

South Korea: The Korea Trade Commission (KTC) has launched a probe into imported white cement from Egypt. The commission will investigate the possible necessity of anti-dumping duties on imports of the product. Yonhap English News has reported that the KTC is responding to a complaint from domestic white cement producer Union Corporation. The producer accuses International Cement Trading and Egypt-based Royal El Minya Cement of damaging its business through cement dumping. The KTC will complete its preliminary investigation before 1 September 2023.

India: UltraTech Cement sold 106Mt of cement during the 2023 financial year, which ended on 31 March 2023. This corresponds to a 12% year-on-year rise from 94Mt in the 2022 financial year. The producer sold 30Mt of cement during the fourth quarter of the financial year, up by 14% year-on-year from 28Mt.

The Hindu newspaper has reported that UltraTech Cement ended the financial year with a cement production capacity of 134Mt/yr, including 2Mt/yr-worth of white cement capacity. It also operates three wall putty plants.

India: Aditya Birla subsidiary UltraTech Cement has commissioned a new 400,000t/yr putty plant in Rajasthan. The facility will produce the company's WallCare white cement-based putty. Reuters News has reported the cost of its construction as US$22.9m.

Ivory Coast: The local cement sector is preparing to reach a production capacity of 20Mt/yr by the end of 2022. Albert Kouatelay, director of deputy cabinet of the Ivorian Minister of Trade, Industry and Promotion of SMEs, made the comment at the launch event for LafargeHolcim Côte d'Ivoire's new white cement product, according to the Agence de Presse Africaine. The country has 13 cement plants and the latest boost is expected once a new cement unit starts operation. Domestic production capacity was reportedly 2.4Mt/yr in 2011, 12.5Mt/yr in 2019 and 17Mt/yr in 2022.
