PPC publishes Integrated Report 2023

South Africa: PPC has published its Integrated Report for its 2023 financial year, which ended on 31 March 2023. The producer recorded revenues of US$559m, up by 0.2% year-on-year from US$557m in the 2022 financial year. Its cost of sales declined by 0.1% to US$471m from US$472m. As a result, PPC's loss widened by a factor of more than seven, to US$32.5m from US$4.36m.

PPC's cement volumes fell by 5.8% in South Africa and Botswana, where its cement prices rose by 8%. The company noted sustained 'good demand' for cement in coastal South Africa. It said that demand was 'robust' in Zimbabwe, however its local sales volumes fell by 16% on account of an extended kiln shutdown at one of its cement plants during the half. In Rwanda, PPC's subsidiary CIMERWA increased its cement volumes by 1%.

Pakistani cement consumption drops in February 2023

Pakistan: Cement consumption fell by 7.1% year-on-year in February 2023 with total dispatches reaching 4.04Mt against 4.35Mt dispatched in February 2022. According to the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA), local cement dispatches by the industry during February 2023 were 3.59Mt compared to 3.94Mt in February 2022, a decline of 9%. Exports increased by 11%, as volumes rose from 405,489t in February 2022 to 449,940t in February 2023.

In February 2023, cement plants in the north of Pakistan dispatched a total of 3.01Mt of cement, down by 7.4% against 3.26Mt in February 2022. Cement plants in the south of Pakistan dispatched 1.03Mt during February 2023, 6.1% less than 1.09Mt during February 2022.

Northern cement plants supplied 2.95Mt to the domestic market, an 8.3% fall, while southern plants sold 640,645t, a 12.0% fall. Exports from the north rose by 58.2% as quantities increased to 64,717t. Exports from the south increased by 5.7% to 385,223t.

An APCMA spokesperson said that the economic situation in the country was becoming more complicated with each passing day. “We are facing serious operational problems. We need timely supply of spare parts and consumable items to ensure stable operation of our plants and we urge the government to come-up with practically applicable and industry friendly policies to enable the industry to come out of this difficult situation.”

DG Khan Cement despatches cement to the US

Pakistan: DG Khan Cement despatched its second cement shipment to the US on 18 January 2023. The shipment consisted of 37,500t of low-alkali cement, and is part of an order for 600,000t. The Business Recorder newspaper has reported that DG Khan Cement previously shipped 50,000t to the US in June 2022. The latest delivery is destined for Houston, Texas.

DG Khan Cement's executive director Farid Fazal said that the Pakistan cement industry is position to obtain an over 10% share in the US import market. During 2022, Pakistan and 24 other countries exported cement to the US.

Pakistani cement despatches drop as exports nearly halve in first half of 2023 financial year

Pakistan: All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) members despatched 21.8Mt of cement during the six-month period up to 31 December 2022, the first half of Pakistan’s 2023 financial year. The figure corresponds to a decline of 21% year-on-year from 27.5Mt during the first half of the 2022 financial year. Producers exported 1.73Mt of cement, down by 49% from 3.39Mt in the first half of the 2022 financial year.

The drop in sales was most pronounced in Southern Pakistan, where producers despatched 4.66Mt of cement, down by 31% year-on-year from 6.75Mt. Meanwhile, Northern Pakistani producers despatched 17.1Mt of cement, down by 17% from 20.7Mt.

An APCMA spokesperson said “The current economic turmoil has badly impacted on cement consumption. Inflation has played havoc with the pockets of consumers. New construction projects, including housing, are few in number, while routine maintenance of residential buildings has been postponed for better times.” They added “The Russia-Ukraine war has badly impacted cement exports too.”

Melón reports fire at Puerto Ventanas port

03 January 2023

Chile: A fire at Sites 1, 2, 3 and 5 of Puerto Ventanas port in Valparaíso Region has disrupted clinker transportation to Melón’s Puerto Ventanas cement plant. The La Tercera newspaper has reported that the fire destroyed a clinker conveying system connecting the port to the cement plant. The producer expects the damage to ‘significantly impact’ its cement production capacity for a period which it is ‘not yet possible to specify.’

Melón said, “We have deployed contingency and operational continuity plans in order to ensure our supply to our customers." It added that it could not yet quantify the ultimate impacts on its assets, liabilities or results.

Gujarat Sidhee Cement suspends clinker production at Sidheegram cement plant

20 December 2022

India: Gujarat Sidhee Cement has temporarily shut down the kiln of its Sidheegram cement plant in Gujarat's Junagadh District for maintenance work. Reuters has reported that the closure will last from 19 December 2022 until 27 December 2022 at the earliest, during which time cement grinding and despatch operations will run as normal.

Cementos Concepción to commence commercial cement sales from early December 2022

Paraguay: Cementos Concepción says that it will begin to commercially supply cement to Paraguay's major cities in early December 2022. The La Nación newspaper producer commissioned its US$300m Concepción cement plant in November 2022. It now operates with a production capacity of 20m 42.5kg bags annually.

South Korean cement production may shut down from 5 December amid truck driver strike

28 November 2022

South Korea: Cement producers say that an on-going truck drivers' strike will force them to suspend production from 5 December 2022 if it continues for another week. Yonhap English News has reported that Industry Minister Lee Chang-Yang spoke to industry representatives on a visit to Asia Cement's Jecheon cement plant in Chunbuk. The cost of missed deliveries after four full days of the strike on 28 November 2022 was US$34.6m.

Pakistan’s cement dispatches fall in October 2022

Pakistan: Cement dispatches declined by 18.5% year-on-year across Pakistan in October 2022, according to data from the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers’ Association (APCMA). Total cement dispatches during October 2022 were 4.25Mt, compared to 5.22Mt in October 2021. Local dispatches fell by 3.98Mt in October 2022 from 4.60Mt in October 2021, a fall of 15.5%. Exports fell by 40.7% from 611,000t in October 2021 to 362,000t in October 2022.

During the first four months of the current fiscal year, which began on 1 July 2022, Pakistan’s total cement dispatches - domestic and exports - were 13.9Mt, down by 23.1% from more than 18Mt during the corresponding period of the prior fiscal year. Domestic dispatches during this period were 12.5Mt against 15.9Mt a year earlier, a reduction of 21.4%. Exports were 36.0% lower than in the first four months of the 2021 - 22 fiscal year, falling to 1.38Mt.

Cahya Mata Sarawak reassures customers amid cement shortage

31 October 2022

Malaysia: Cahya Mata Sarawak has informed its customers that its cement despatches will be 'back to normal' by 6 November 2022. The producer's closure of its 1Mt/yr Kuching cement plant for maintenance, followed by unexpected raw materials supply issues, has caused a shortage of cement in western Sarawak State. Bernama Daily Malaysian News has reported that a 14-day delay to raw materials deliveries to the Kuching plant ensued due to heavy rains.

The producer said “We would like to apologise for the shortage of cement, and will strive to ensure a steady supply of cement to all of our customers.”

Cahya Mata Sarawak has successfully maintained regular supply of cement to other areas of Sarawak, including Bintulu, Miri and Sibu, through despatches of cement from its Bintulu grinding plant.
