India: Sagar Cements recorded sales of US$80.5m in the third quarter of the 2024 financial year, up by 16% year-on-year from US$69.3m during the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. Cement sales volumes rose by 14% year-on-year. The Hindu BusinessLine News has reported that the growth allowed Sagar Cements to reduce its net losses by 57%, to US$1.22m.
Managing director Sreekanth Reddy said “Favourable prices prevailed in our key markets. As far as EBITDA and margins are concerned, we observed a significant enhancement on a per-tonne basis, consistent with our earlier projections.” Reddy added “We anticipate this positive trend to persist in the future, supported in part by higher utilisation levels of recently-acquired units and strategic initiatives aimed at promoting the use of green power, alternative fuels and the deployment of electric trucks and wheel loaders.”
Swiss cement shipments drop in 2023
18 January 2024Switzerland: Swiss cement shipments dropped by 10% year-on-year to 3.7Mt in 2023, from 4.1Mt in 2022. Shipments declined across all quarters, including by 10% quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter. Cement with a reduced clinker factor grew to account for 96% of shipments from 95%, and rail shipments rose to 38%. Ready-mixed concrete plants received 73% of shipments, and building sites 21%.
The Swiss cement association, Cemsuisse, said that it anticipates continued uncertainties and high import pressures in 2024.
Saudi Arabia: Najran Cement has informed investors via a posting on the Saudi Exchange that it expects its cost of sales to rise by 13%. This is due to an increase in the price of fuels by its supplier Saudi Aramco. The cement producer noted that the waste heat recovery (WHR) system installed at its Najran cement plant has partly reduced the anticipated impacts on costs.
Najran Cement said “The company will work during the coming period to explore ways to reduce the financial impact of this adjustment on the company’s profits and will continue to implement its plans to reduce costs and improve production and operating efficiency. It will also work with government agencies to explore ways to diversify energy sources.”
Saudi Arabia: Arabian Cement Company has estimated that its production costs will rise by 14% after Saudi Aramco raised its fuel prices. In an addendum to a previous announcement published on the Saudi Exchange on 4 January 2024, the producer said that it will explore cost reduction strategies throughout the coming financial period.
Summit Materials and Cementos Argos complete US merger
15 January 2024US: Summit Materials and Cementos Argos have successfully combined their operations in the US under a single entity. Summit Materials acquired Argos North America Corp. for US$1.2bn, and conversely issued 31% of its shares to Cementos Argos. Summit Materials expects to derive US$100m in additional earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) through the deal. Three representatives of Colombia-based Grupo Argos will sit on the board of up to 11 directors of the new combined entity.
Cementos Argos CEO Juan Esteban Calle said "The combination with Summit Materials, which had the resounding support of its shareholders, allows us to begin a new chapter in the successful history of our presence in the US, and is built on shared values, strategic vision and complementary capabilities.” He added “This new milestone consolidates our objective of continuing to expand our presence in the most attractive construction materials industry in the world for the benefit of our shareholders and all interest groups."
Brazilian cement demand drops in 2023
12 January 2024Brazil: Brazil consumed 62Mt in 2023, down by 1.7% year-on-year, according to data from the National Cement Industry Association (SNIC). This marks the second successive year of decline, after demand dropped by 2.8% to 63.1Mt in 2022. As a result, cement’s value on the National Construction Cost Index dropped by 6%, after having risen by 13% in 2022. The domestic cement industry recorded a capacity utilisation rate of 66% in 2023.
SNIC president Paulo Camillo Penna noted high household debt, high interest rates and poor income growth as impacting the industry’s sales. He said “The My House, My Life housing programme was not fully operational until the middle of the year. Up to September 2023, the construction industry experienced a 16% decline in the number of real-estate launches.” He continued “By 2026, we will experience a period of turnaround for the cement industry.”
Vicem’s cement and clinker volumes drop by 18% in 2023
10 January 2024Vietnam: State-owned Vicem sold 22.6Mt of cement and clinker in 2023, down by 18% year-on-year from 2022 levels. Việt Nam News has reported that the producer exported 2.85Mt of cement and clinker, 85% of its target volumes for the year. For 2024, Vicem aims to achieve full-year sales of 24.3Mt, up by 7.7%.
Saudi Arabia: Utilities provider Saudi Aramco has notified Saudi Arabian cement producers of a rise in the price of its feedstock and fuel products from 1 January 2024. Zawya News has reported that Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company forecast the effect of the price rise to be a 1.2% increase in producers’ cost of sales in 2024.
Yanbu Cement said “The impact of changing the price of fuel products will lead to an increase in the cost of production.” Umm Al-Qura Cement echoed the concern, while Saudi Cement Company said that it is working out the extent of the financial impact and will study ways to mitigate it.
Adbri updates market on Kwinana grinding plant expansion
15 December 2023Australia: Adbri says that the cost and timing of its on-going expansion of its Kwinana grinding plant in Western Australia remain ‘on track.’ To date, the producer has invested US$161m in the expansion, towards a projected cost of US$385-420m.
In an accompanying trading update, Adbri said that it expects its full-year earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) to be US$208 -212m in 2023, ‘moderately’ above its previous outlook. In 2022, its earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) amounted to US$106m. The company has forecast total capital expenditure investments for 2023 of US$208-215m. It previously expected to invest US$221-235m during 2023.
Cement market to grow in India but not in China in 2024
12 December 2023China/India: Research organisation Fitch Ratings has forecast continued ‘steady’ growth of 6 – 8% year-on-year in cement demand in India in 2024. Meanwhile, it expects demand in China to remain ‘weak,’ amid low activity levels in the residential construction sector. Nonetheless, Fitch Ratings said that rising installed cement capacity will limit growth in producers’ profit margins in India, while producers’ profit margins will stabilise in China.
