SLK Cement increases railway wagon fleet in 2021

Russia: SLK Cement says it has purchased over 230 gondola-style railway wagons so far in 2021 as it modernises its fleet. At present the company owns 701 units of rolling stock. 445 of these are open wagons. Its latest addition was 61 gondola wagons in October 2021. The cement producer has made the investment to reduce its delivery costs. It added that it has subsequently reduced its unit costs for rail transportation in 2021.

Wonder Cements dispatches first delivery of cement from Nardana grinding plant to Ahmednagar

India: Wonder Cements has dispatched cement from its Nardana, Maharashtra, grinding plant via a new rail route to Ahmednagar, also in Maharashtra. The Free Press Journal newspaper has reported that Wonder Cement plans to extend its use of the route 'in the near future' to send cement by rail to Mumbai Port. Western Railway's Mumbai Division expects to receive revenues of US$26,700/yr for use of its services. At its current rates, this would equate to annual deliveries of 383t.

Cementos Cosmos to upgrade Ourense grinding plant with new compressor

Spain: Cementos Cosmos plans to install a new screw compressor in the cement discharge system at its Ourense grinding plant in Galicia. The producer says that the new equipment will improve the energy efficiency of the process of discharging cement from railway tanks to storage silos. The cost of the work is Euro23,500, towards which Cementos Cosmos has received a Euro8140 grant from the European Reagional Development Fund (ERDF) under its A New Way to Build Europe programme.

Holcim Belgium to apply for permit to replace kiln at Obourg cement plant

Belgium: Holcim Belgium is hosting a public meeting as a preliminary step towards applying for a permit to install a new kiln line at its Obourg cement plant in Mons. The line is intended to replace the existing kiln line as it reaches the end of its operational life. The subsidiary of Switzerland-based Holcim has called the proposed project Go4Zero. The new kiln will be designed to concentrate CO2 emissions to allow for capture and recovery. Limestone for the plant will be extracted from a quarry at Tournaisis and transported to the plant by railway.

SLK orders 100 railway wagons

Russia: SLK Cement has ordered 100 gondola railway wagons to improve its logistics operations over the busy summer sales period. It increases the company’s fleet of railway wagons - including hoppers, gondolas and dump cars – to 570 units. Yevgeny Grishchenko, the Logistics Director of SLK Cement, said that the expanded railway fleet would reduce delays in deliveries and reduce transport costs.

Votorantim Cimentos starts new production line at Pecém grinding plant

Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos has started operation of a new production line at its Pecém grinding plant in Ceará. The US$38m upgrade brings the production capacity of the site to 1Mt/yr from 0.2Mt/yr previously. The project was suspended temporarily in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The producer also operates the integrated 2.2Mt/yr Sobral plant in Ceará and a terminal in Fortaleza. The production sites the company runs in the state are connected by railway and a further line has been extended to connect the terminal.

Holcim Azerbaijan begins cement exports to Georgia

14 July 2021

Azerbaijan: Holcim Azerbaijan has exported its first of planned regular weekly shipments of cement to Gerogia. The Azer News newspaper has reported that transport partner ADY Express, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan Railways, will carry out the orders. It has allocated 50 train cars to make the trip four times monthly, resulting in total shipments of 15,000t/month.

ANCAP signs rail deal in Uruguay

Uruguay: The Administación Nacional de Combustibles, Alcohol y Portland (ANCAP) and the Administración de Ferrocarriles del Estado (AFE) have signed an agreement to exchange logistics services, materials and real estate. Under the deal ANCAP estimates that 380,000tt/yr of fuel and 390,000t/yr of cement and limestone can be transported by rail. The arrangement also includes: offering preferential transport rates to ANCAP; moving cement and limestone between ANCAP’s plants and quarries; conducting restorative work at ANCAP’s Queguay limestone quarry and its integrated Paysandú cement plant; and supplying rail ballast to AFE.

Müller Steinag Holding to acquire Creabeton Matériaux from Vigier Holding

Switzerland: France-based Vicat subsidiary Vigier Holding has agreed to sell precast concrete producer Creabeton Matériaux to Müller Steinag Holding. The group says that it will finalise the deal within the first half of 2021.

Creabeton Matériaux specialises in the prefabrication of concrete products. It has a workforce of nearly 380 employees and reported a turnover of Euro83m in 2020. Vigier Holding will retains its railway business including the construction of concrete sleepers.

Cemex to buy aggregate assets in France

13 April 2021

France: Mexico-based Cemex has signed an agreement to buy assets in Paris metropolitan area. The new acquisitions consist of two aggregates quarries and a rail platform. The assets previously belonged to Ireland-based CRH subsidiary Equiom Granulats. The purchase is expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2021.

Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asiaregional president Sergio Menendez said, "This acquisition will allow us to better serve our customers by integrating and complementing our portfolio to provide a comprehensive and sustainable offering, directly aimed at the rapidly growing needs of the North Paris Metropolitan Area." He added "This is a clear example of the efforts that we are doing to foster earning before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation growth by investing in key high-growth urban centres worldwide."
