LafargeHolcim Maroc to export second shipment from Agadir plant to West Africa

29 June 2022

Morocco: LafargeHolcim Maroc is preparing to export clinker to West Africa in early July 2022. The shipment will be the plant’s second clinker export following a consignment of 40,000t to Guinea, according to the Les Eco newspaper. The plant, based near Tidsi, has been operational since late 2021.

LafargeHolcim Maroc provides update on 1.6Mt/yr Agadir cement plant

Morocco: Holcim subsidiary LafargeHolcim Maroc has released information about its 1.6Mt/yr Agadir cement plant in Souss-Massa Region. The producer invested US$299m in the plant’s construction and it has been operational since late 2021. The plant is highly automated in line with Holcim’s Plants of Tomorrow strategy. It will run off wind power from 2023, and also uses alternative fuel (AF). 200 people work at the plant.

In conjunction with its work in setting up the new cement plant, LafargeHolcim Maroc developed drinking water networks in the surrounding area, including the construction of three solar-powered water towers.

Moroccan domestic cement sales total 14Mt in 2021

Morocco: The Professional Association of Cement Manufacturers (APC) has recorded domestic cement deliveries of 14Mt in 2021. The figure corresponds to 58% of the industry’s 25.8Mt/yr capacity.

Ciments du Maroc to commission new Nador grinding plant in July 2022

Morocco: Ciments du Maroc plans to commission its 0.7Mt/yr grinding plant at Nador in July 2022. The production unit, belonging to the subsidiary of Germany-based HeidelbergCement, is located around 18 km outside of Nador. The project has a budget of around US$36m and it intended to support development in northern and eastern regions of the country. Construction of the plant started in 2020.

LafargeHolcim Maroc to launch Agadir-Souss cement plant before 2022

Morocco: LafargeHolcim Maroc says that it is on schedule to commission its new 1.6Mt/yr Agadir-Souss cement plant in Souss-Massa region before 2022. The Ajourd’hui le Maroc newspaper has reported that the plant will rely on artificial intelligence (AI) in its cement production process. The total cost of the project is US$335m. The producer says that, when operational, the plant will create 1400 jobs.

Moroccan cement and clinker standards tighten

Morocco: The government of Morocco has tightened cement and clinker quality standards. The Le Matin newspaper has reported that the new standards will see cement and clinker assessed on the basis of higher consistency and final product durability standards than previously.

Morocco’s Settat cement plant ranked as second most efficient in LafargeHolcim Group

Morocco: LafargeHolcim’s Settat plant has been ranked as the second most efficient integrated cement plant in LafargeHolcim Group. The classification is based on industrial performance criteria in terms of efficiency, cost and sustainable development covering 129 of the group’s integrated plants around the world. Five of the six plants operated by LafargeHolcim Morocco are also reported to be in the Top 20 of this list. The 1.7Mt/yr Settat plant has also become a pilot in the group’s ‘plant of tomorrow" initiative whereby automation technologies, robotics, artificial intelligence and predictive maintenance will be used to improve its production efficiency further still.

CIMAF Gabon launches 32.5 grade cement product

09 June 2021

Gabon: Ciments d'Afrique (CIMAF) has launched a 32.5 grade of cement intended for masonry work. Local dignitaries, including government minister Pascal Houangni Ambourouet, Owendo mayor Jeanne Mbagou and Moroccan ambassador Abdellah Sbihi, attended the launch event, according to the Gabon Review. The subsidiary of Morocco based CIMAF already sells a 42.5 grade product on the local market for larger structures.

Saâd Dalil appointed as cement sales and marketing director of LafargeHolcim Morocco

Morocco: LafargeHolcim Morocco has appointed Saâd Dalil as its cement sales and marketing director. He succeeds Boubker Bouchentouf, who is retiring after over 25 years with the group.

Dalil, aged 45 years, has worked for LafargeHolcim Morocco for over 14 years, most recently as its director of concrete. He originally trained in agricultural economics and holds an executive master of business administration (MBA) from the École des Ponts Business School.

LafargeHolcim Morocco to open new plant near Agadir in July 2021

Morocco: LafargeHolcim Morocco plans to open its new 1.6Mt/yr plant in Souss-Massa region in July 2021. The project has a budget of around US$330m. The unit is located 45km southwest of Agadir. As part of the group’s ‘plant of tomorrow’ concept it is intended to use automation technologies, robotics, artificial intelligence and predictive maintenance to improve its production efficiency. The plant is also planning to use wind power and alternative fuels. The company has also built new roads to support the plant as well as installations to establish a local drinking water network for neighbouring villages.
