Locals’ hunger strike compels UltraTech Cement to address community commitments

India: Village leaders from Maharashtra’s Chandrapur District began a hunger strike on 17 November 2023 with the stated aim of ensuring that UltraTech Cement continues to deliver on its commitments to its host communities. Specifically, the demonstration sought to make the producer distribute funding for roadbuilding projects across 12 villages surrounding its 3.6Mt/yr Awarpur cement plant. The Hitavada newspaper has reported that UltraTech Cement agreed to the strikers’ demands on 19 November 2023. In addition to the funding, the company will give preferential treatment to industrial training institute (ITI) and polytechnic students lodging at the selected villages when allocating apprenticeships and training places and make some of its land available for community uses.

UNACEM Peru reduces its cement's CO2 emissions by 2.7% in 2022

Peru: UNACEM Peru said that it reduced its CO2 emissions per tonne of cement by 2.7% year-on-year during 2022. Throughout the year, the company reduced its electricity consumption by 3.4%. It sourced 90% of its electricity from renewable sources and met 70% of its fuel needs with natural gas. UNACEM Peru is committed to reaching carbon neutral cement production by 2050.

In terms of community engagement, the producer benefitted 76,700 people through its social infrastructure investments and 14,1000 people through its dialogue space initiatives, and provided its remote health guidance service to 3000 people.

Cemex USA commissions new cement unloader at Port of Palm Beach

US: Cemex USA has commissioned a new 225t cement unloader for handling dry bulk materials from ships at the Port of Palm Beach in Florida. The port says that the producer invested US$7m in the equipment. It is decorated with a mural of a manatee cow and calf, dedicated to local conservation charity Friends of Manatee Lagoon.

Weather suspends operations at Sanghi Industries' Sanghipuram cement plant

16 June 2023

India: Sanghi Industries suspended operations at it Sanghipuram cement plant in Gujarat from 13 June 2023, ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Biparjoy on 15 June 2023. EB News has reported that Sanghi Industries has established refuges for its workers and host community, and has prepared food and first aid deliveries, emergency transport and monitoring. The company said that it will restart operations when normal conditions resume and in compliance with the advice of the government.

Times Now News has reported that Cyclone Biparjoy killed two people and injured 22 on the coast of Gujarat. Extremely heavy rain is forecast for 17 June 2023 in Kachchh District, where the Sanghipuram cement plant is located.

Lafarge Canada commits US$11,200/yr to extended Forêt-Boucher Foundation biodiversity collaboration

Canada: Holcim subsidiary Lafarge Canada has extended its biodiversity collaboration with the Forêt-Boucher Foundation. Under the expanded partnership, Lafarge Canada has committed to annual contributions of US$11,200/yr until 2028.

The collaboration will focus its efforts on conservation of the Boucher Forest in Quebec, near the site of Lafarge Canada’s Klock quarry. Boucher Forest contains habitats with 1150 different species.

Cementos Rezola donates to Gipuzkoa Food Bank

Spain: Heidelberg Materials subsidiary Cementos Rezola has made a donation of 1t-worth of food to the Gipuzkoa Food Bank, which delivers food to households across Gipuzkoa Province. Europa Press News has reported that the cement producer despatched the donation from its Añorga cement plant in San Sebastián.

Cementos Rezola thanked the Gipuzkoa Food Bank for its work in support of 'Gipuzkoan families that are going through difficult times in a context marked by the cost of living and the increase in costs of energy.'

Lucky Cement distributes flood aid

Pakistan: Lucky Cement has distributed ration bags, tents and first aid kits to victims of flooding Dadu, Khairpur, Sanghar and Uthal.

The Balochistan Times newspaper has reported that the company said “The immense destruction of houses and damages to crops caused by the floods, made victims homeless and they are now in the state of starvation.” It continued “In this time of crisis, Lucky Cement, Pakistan's largest cement manufacturer, has reached out to far-flung areas which were worst affected by the flash floods in North and South of Pakistan to provide relief to the victims.”

Siam City Cement donates to Sri Lankans in crisis

Thailand/Sri Lanka: Siam City Cement has despatched US$111,000-worth of medical supplies and monetary donations to Sri Lanka as humanitarian aid amid the on-going financial crisis in the country. Year-on-year inflation was 61% in July 2022.

The Nation newspaper reported that the Thai government has donated a total of US$158,000-worth of supplies to the country. It said “The donations reflect the close and cordial ties as well as the goodwill between Thai and Sri Lankan people.”

JSW Cement builds Maa Kali temple in Salboni

15 July 2022

India: JSW Cement has dedicated a new temple at its Ankur commune in Salboni, West Bengal, to the goddess Maa Kali. The Orissa Diary newspaper has reported that architecture firm Dulal Mukherjee and Associates designed the temple in the 17th century Bishnupur style. The place of worship is made of locally sourced terracotta.

JSW Cement spokesperson Anushree Jindal said "JSW Cement believes in collaborating with local communities to empower them for a better future. I feel blessed and privileged to have facilitated the creation of a pious, safe haven of worship for the local community in Salboni."

LafargeHolcim Maroc provides update on 1.6Mt/yr Agadir cement plant

27 June 2022

Morocco: Holcim subsidiary LafargeHolcim Maroc has released information about its 1.6Mt/yr Agadir cement plant in Souss-Massa Region. The producer invested US$299m in the plant’s construction and it has been operational since late 2021. The plant is highly automated in line with Holcim’s Plants of Tomorrow strategy. It will run off wind power from 2023, and also uses alternative fuel (AF). 200 people work at the plant.

In conjunction with its work in setting up the new cement plant, LafargeHolcim Maroc developed drinking water networks in the surrounding area, including the construction of three solar-powered water towers.
