India: Residents of Kamrup, Assam, have petitioned the district government to block Taj Cement’s plans to build a new 1Mt/yr grinding plant at Chamata Pathar. The residents’ petition cites groundwater and ecological concerns over the plan. The Sentinel newspaper has reported that the plant will be the third cement facility in the immediate area. The area adjoins the Amchang and Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuaries.
The Greater Dimoria Citizens’ Protection Committee said “The current cement factories have already taken a toll on our environment and health. The proposed Taj Cement plant will only make matters worse, putting our lives and the nearby wildlife sanctuaries at risk.”
India: Tamil Nadu Cement Corporation plans to rehabilitate limestone mines which serve its 500,000t/yr Ariyalur cement plant in Tamil Nadu. The state's Minister for Industry Thalikottai Rasuthevar Baalu Rajaa said that the state-owned producer will plant saplings to start the restoration.
The Hindu newspaper has reported that Rajaa and other ministers of the Tamil Nadu government visited the Ariyalur cement plant on 25 June 2023.
Holcim to set Science Based Targets for Nature
26 May 2023Switzerland: Holcim has announced its participation in the Science Based Targets Network's Science Based Targets for Nature pilot. Under the initaitive, Holcim will submit targets for the conservation of land and freshwater ecosystems for validation later in 2023.
Holcim's chief sustainability and innovation officer Magali Anderson said "Setting science-based targets for nature is key to making a real and measurable impact to preserve and restore biodiversity and freshwater ecosystems. As part of this initiative, we aim to bring our climate and nature action closer together."
