Sabah's new cement plant to double as tourist attraction

27 November 2024

Malaysia: Borneo Cement (Sabah) (BCS) plans to convert its upcoming integrated cement plant in Sabah's Tongod district into a tourist destination once the plant begins operations in May 2025. According to BCS chair Masiung Banah, limestone processing and environmental protection practices could serve as a an ‘attractive package’ for foreign and domestic tourists, according to The Star Malaysia. He said that limestone areas rich in flora and fauna and tropical ecosystems would be maintained without being polluted by factory waste. The plant will also reportedly be made into a research hub for Malaysian universities. It is currently in its first phase of development.

Mexican government to offer Vulcan Materials US$390m for Quintana Roo quarry and terminal

01 August 2023

Mexico: The Mexican ambassador to the US is due to make US-based Vulcan Materials an offer of US$390m to sell a 2400 hectare parcel of land in Quintana Roo to the government. The land includes a disused limestone quarry and the Riviera Maya cement terminal, which is currently used by Cemex. The government's Ministry of the Environment ordered the closure of the quarry in May 2022, when it also banned Vulcan Materials from despatching limestone.

Mexican President López Obrador said that Vulcan Materials 'shouldn't reject the offer.' He added "We’ll buy everything from them, we’ll pay immediately and we’ll turn 2000 hectares into a natural protected area. They’ll be able to say "We’re contributing to stopping climate change." And we’ll only keep one part, to carry out an ecotourism development with a cruise ship pier.”

Associated Press News has reported that Vulcan Materials has filed a valuation showing the land to be worth US$1.9bn.

SCG president and CEO Roongrote Rangsiyopash said "The economic outlook for 2023 seems to be better than last year, but we will continue to monitor risk factors that may affect our businesses.”

Armenia to reduce cement and clinker tariffs

12 September 2022

Armenia: The tariff on cement imports has been reduced by 35% to US$22/t, from US$34/t previously, following changes to import rules by the government. Imports of clinker will be subject to no tariffs.

News.am has reported that seven-month cement imports to Armenia rose by 1.7% year-on-year in the period up to 31 August 2022, to 84.7Mt from 83Mt. The cause of the growth is variously the cancellation of an income tax refund on mortgages from 1 July 2022, the increased immigration of Russian citizens into Armenia and the growth of tourism.
