Adelaide Brighton further reduces profit forecast for 2019

31 July 2019

Australia: Adelaide Brighton says that it expects its net profit, after tax excluding property, to be no higher than US$90m in 2019. This is a further reduction on the forecast of around US$110m it made in May 2019. It has blamed poor residential and civil construction markets, continued competition in Queensland and South Australia, growing raw material costs and fees related to a cancelled import order.

Adelaide Brighton issues profit warning for 2019

Australia: Adelaide Brighton expects that its net profit in 2019 will fall by up to 15% year-on-year from the US$133m it reported in 2018. It forecasts that the decline will be driven by weakening demand from the residential market, increased competition from cement imports, higher competition in Queensland and rising raw material costs.

Adelaide Brighton’s sales rise in 2018

01 March 2019

Australia: Adelaide Brighton’s sales revenue grew by 4.6% year-on-year to US$1.16bn in 2018 from US$1.11bn in 2017. Its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) fell slightly to US$188m. The group said that its cement sales volumes grew by 1.1% in 2018 due to ‘strong’ demand in Melbourne and Sydney from residential construction and infrastructure projects. Prices increased in most markets with the exception of South Australia, where it faced competition from bulk imports.

“Increased revenue in 2018 reflects Adelaide Brighton capitalising on the favourable demand environment for construction materials and lime as well as the delivery on expectations for the concrete and aggregates acquisitions made in 2017. “East coast construction markets were strong in 2018, South Australia and the Northern Territory were flat and Western Australia was down, while lime demand from the resources sector was stable,” said chief executive officer (CEO) Nick Miller.

Adelaide Brighton in legal case over missing millions

25 September 2018

Australia: Adelaide Brighton is seeking damages from a former credit manager over US$9m in missing funds. The cement producer has accused former employee Glenda Ivy Burgess of the embezzlement following an internal audit, according to the Advertiser newspaper. Burgess worked for Adelaide Brighton for 18 years but was dismissed in February 2018.

The allegations include misallocating customer payments, falsifying accounts, increasing customer credit limits without authority and providing false information.

The construction company launched a civil lawsuit against Burgess at the same time that a police investigation was ongoing. This has subsequently led to a clash between civil and criminal proceedings as the accused successfully petitioned the Supreme Court to delay the civil case whilst the criminal investigation continues.
