Zahana Cement orders crusher from Bedeschi
09 November 2018Algeria: Zahana Cement, part of Groupe des Ciments d’Algérie (GICA), has ordered a RL 850/1500 double roller crusher from Italy’s Bedeschi. The contract is on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis and it includes the supply of the new machine, designed for 500t/hr of marl, the removal of the existing machine and the installation of the new crusher with the revamping of the existing electrical board. Commissioning is expected by mid-2018.
ASEC looking to leave Zahana
05 September 2018Algeria: Egypt’s Qalaa Holdings has announced that its subsidiary ASEC Cement is looking to exit from Algeria-based Zahana Cement Factory. ASEC holds around a 35% stake in the Algerian facility and has so far invested US$62m in the plant, taking its capacity to 0.75Mt/yr. A new 1.6Mt/yr production line is currently being constructed at the plant, with commissioning expected in early 2020.
LafargeHolcim Algeria makes first export of clinker
03 August 2018Algeria: LafargeHolcim Algeria has exported 40,000t of clinker from the port of Oran. This is the company’s first export of clinker, following exports of cement carried out earlier in the year, according to the Algeria Press Service. The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim operates two cement plants in the country and it holds stakes in two others.
China Triumph International Engineering to manage second production line build at STG’s Adrar cement plant
11 July 2018Algeria: China Triumph International Engineering (CTIE) is set to start procuring equipment for a US$211m production line at STG Engineering and Real Estate Development’s plant at Adrar. The line will be the second production line at the site and it will have a production capacity of 4200t/day of marine cement, according to Inside International Industrials. CTIE is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project and its subsidiary Beijing Triumph International Engineering will manage the engineering design work.
GICA aims to export up to 1.5Mt of cement in 2018
20 June 2018Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d’Algérie’s (GICA) aims to export 1 - 1.5Mt of cement in 2018. The Ministry of Industry and Mines said that the group has signed a deal to export 30,000t via its SODISMAC subsidiary, according to the Algeria Press Service. GICA is also in discussion with foreign partners to export other products such as limestone and gypsum. The cement company handles its exports via the ports of Arzew and Djendjen.
In 2017, the group recorded record cement production of nearly 14Mt compared with 12.6Mt in 2016. It exported 45,000t of cement in May 2018 under a contract with a total volume of 200,000t.
Algeria: Lafarge Algeria says it plans to focus on exports and roads in 2018. Serge Dubois, director of public relations at the company, said that it intends to export 5Mt or 30% of the market by 2020, according to the El Watan newspaper. The cement producer has already conducted seven export operations since Decemebr 2017 to West Africa. The other priority is to encourage the use of cement in local infrastructure, incuding road expansion plans.
Algeria: Italy’s Cimprogetti says it is making progress on a lime plant it is building with Bedeschi for Algerian Qatari Steel. The project is to build a lime plant supporting a steel plant at Bellara in Jijel. It includes the design and supply of the entire lime plant, from the limestone receiving area to quicklime storage, which is directly connected to the Danieli steel mill. The design of power and control systems has been developed by Cimprogetti, including the supply of all electrical panels, medium and low voltage transformers, the diesel generator set and all cables. Cimprogetti is also working with Idom, a Spanish company, on the design and erection phases of the project.
The lime plant will use two Flex Reversy 9 kilns with a daily production of 420t/day each, and will be operated with natural gas. The mechanical erection is almost complete and the electrical installation has recently started. The erection works are being checked by Cimprogetti site engineers in collaboration with the end user.
GICA makes first cement export to Europe
03 May 2018Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d’Algérie’s (GICA) has made its first export to Europe. The Ministry of Industry and Mines said that 45,000t of cement was exported to Europe via GICA’s building materials distribution subsidiary, according to the L’Expression newspaper. The consignment was the last part of a contract to export 0.2Mt of cement to Europe.
Algeria: LafargeHolcim Algeria has conducted its fourth cement export operation to West Africa. Nearly 8500t of Ordinary Portland Cement were despatched from the port of Arzew in Oran, according to the Algeria Press Service. It follows previous batches in December 2017, March 2018 and the start of April 2018.
The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim aims to increase its cement and clinker exports to West Africa to 5Mt by 2020. In Algeria the company runs two cement plants at M'Sila and Oggaz in Mascara. It also operates a plant at Biskra as a joint-venture with Souakri Group and it manages SCMI’s Meftah's plant in a partnership.
CBMI deal resurrects Djelfa plant for ASEC Cement
10 April 2018Algeria: China’s CBMI has signed a contract with ASEC Cement to build a 4500t/day clinker production line at ASEC Cement’s Djelfa plant. The unit was originally partially built by ASEC Egypt in 2008 and had completed 90% of civil work before it was suspended due to the financial crash. Local company ETRHB Haddad and the Algerian subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) took control of ASEC Cement in 2017 allowing the Djelfa project to continue.
The engineering, procurement and construction contract covers limestone crushing to cement packaging and delivery. It includes engineering, equipment and steel structure procurement, civil construction, erection, training and commissioning. Construction is scheduled to take 19 months from the contract’s activation date. As such the plant could be operational by the end of 2019.
