Minister inaugurates hot gas project at Bokajan cement plant
26 September 2024India: Union Steel and Heavy Industries Minister Haradanahalli Kumaraswamy has visited the Cement Corporation of India (CCI) plant in Bokajan, Assam, where he emphasised the potential of the facility to benefit local communities. During his visit, Kumaraswamy inaugurated a hot gas utilisation project at the plant's raw mills and laid the foundation for a 1MW grid-connected solar photovoltaic plant, reports the Deccan Herald. He also discussed important local issues, including the need for upgrades at the Bokajan cement factory and pollution control. CCI chair and managing director Sanjay Verma outlined plans to upgrade the plant’s equipment over the next three years and highlighted the employment of local labour as vital for regional economic growth.
Telangana government seeks government funding to reopen Cement Corporation of India's Adilabad cement plant
16 January 2023India: The government of Telangana has asked the Indian government for US$612m in funding for the planned reopening of state-owned Cement Corporation of India's Adilabad cement plant, alongside other projects. The Indian government will publish its 2023 - 2024 Union Budget in January 2023. The Times of India newspaper has reported that funding has been insufficient for the Telangana state government to realise its industrial growth plans over eight successive previous budgets.
Cement Corporation of India begins equipment tendering process for Adilabad cement plant shutdown
18 May 2022India: Cement Corporation of India has called for e-tenders for its mothballed Adilabad cement plant's equipment for a sale of the plant's assets prior to its permanent closure and decommissioning. The state-owned company will receive offers until 23 May 2022 and will open bids after 120 days. The New Indian Express newspaper has reported that a planned airport will take up some of the land currently occupied by the plant in Telangana.
The US$7.73m Adilabad cement plant was operational between 1982 and 1998. It reportedly has sufficient limestone reserves to continue cement production until 2122.
Minister lobbies Indian government to reopen Cement Corporation of India plant in Adilabad
06 August 2021India: KT Rama Rao, the Industries and IT Minister, has lobbied the central government to help reopen the Cement Corporation of India (CCI) plant at Adilabad in Telangana. In a letter sent to Mahendra Nath Pandey, the Minister of Heavy Industries, Rao noted that several previous attempts had been made to reopen the unit, according to the Hindu newspaper. He added that the plant continues to hold a mining lease for 48Mt of limestone locally, has a dedicated electricity supply and has water resources. The 4Mt/yr integrated plant was originally built in 1984. Operations stopped in 1996 due to a lack of funds and the site was formerly closed in 2008.
India: The Telangana State Pollution Control Board has ordered Cement Corporation of India and Penna Cements to pay pollution fines for breaches of particulate matter restrictions at their respective cement plants at Tandur in Vikarabad district. The Times of India newspaper has reported that both companies exceeded legal limits eight times between November 2019 and July 2021. The board fined Cement Corporation of India US$3210 and Penna Cements US$4410.
Cement Corporation of India signs MoU with NHPC Limited
12 March 2020India: Cement Corporation of India has signed a memorandum of understanding with power supplier NHPC Limited in order to ‘address the cement requirement’ for the Dibang Multipurpose Project in Lower Dibang Valley district, Arunachal Pradesh. The project is aimed at the construction of a 2880MW hydroelectric power plant and gravity dam for flood control in the Dibang Valley.
India: The Cement Corporation of India has started the sale of its non-operating Nayagaon plant in Madhya Pradesh. Prospective bidders are invited to submit an expression of interest by mid-April 2019, according to the Press Trust of India. The Nayagaon plant was originally shut in 1997 but its mining lease remains valid for two quarries until early 2024.
The state-owned cement producer operates plants at Rajban in Himachal Pradesh, Bokajan in Assam and Tandur in Telangana. It has closed down integrated plants at Mandhar in Chhattisgarh, Kurkunta in Karnataka, Akaltara in Chhattisgarh, Charkhi and Dadri in Haryana, Adilabad in Telangana and Nayagaon in Madhya Pradesh. It has also closed grinding plants at Delhi and Bhatinda in Punjab. The company is planning to sell its non-operating plants first before divesting the operational units.
India: The Cement Corporation of India (CCI) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the owner of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant to build a 2Mt/yr slag and fly ash cement plant. RINL will provide the blast furnace slag and fly ash for the project. The plant is expected to cost US$23m and it will take 15 months once the deal is finalised.
Central Pollution Control Board orders three cement plants to cease operation in Telangana
23 June 2017India: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has ordered three cement plants to stop operation and issued show-cause notices to 11 other units in Telangana. Kakatiya Cements in Nalgonda, Mancherial Cements in Mancherial and the government owned Cement Corporation of India at Tandur have been issued with closure notices, according to the new Indian Express newspaper. Around 240 cement factories across the country have been sent either closure or show-cause notices.
The campaign follows an initiative asking selected industries to install online pollution monitoring systems which are to be connected to the CPCB as well as State Pollution Control Board servers to ensure real-time monitoring of pollution emission of industries. Cement plants have also been sent show-cause notices for failing to meet new emissions standards set by the CPCB.
Government reveals more detail on plan to sell non-operational units of Cement Corporation of India
17 March 2017India: Babul Supriyo, the Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, has revealed that the government is planning to sell five plants in the first phase of its divestment of non-operational units of the Cement Corporation of India (CCI). In a letter to the Indian parliament he said that plants at Mandhar, Kurkunta, Bhatinda, Nayagaon and Charkhi Dadri would be sold first, according to the Press Trust of India. However, legal issues at Delhi Grinding Unit (DGU), Adilabad and Akaltaraneed need to be resolved before these plants can be sold. No value for the sale has been set yet as the plants have not been valued.
