HarbisonWalker International obtains ISO certification for refractory plants in Georgia and Kansas
29 March 2018US: HarbisonWalker International has obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification for its Thomasville monolithic and precast refractory plant in Georgia and its South Shore refractory brick plant in Kansas. The refractory manufacturer now plans to achieve the new ISO standard at the rest of its plants by the end of 2018.
Raysut Cement to consider building plant in Georgia
21 March 2018Georgia: Oman’s Raysut Cement has approved an initial study to consider building a 1Mt/yr cement plant in Georgia. The company’s subsidiary Pioneer Cement Industries Georgia owns a limestone mine with reserves of over 30Mt about 60km from Tiblisi. A final decision on the project is expected to be made by June 2018. Discussions have also commenced with possible partners for both equity participation and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracting.
HeidelbergCement sells half of its Georgian business
13 November 2017Georgia: HeidelbergCement has sold 50% of the voting rights in its Georgian business to Cement Invest, an investment company jointly managed and owned by the Georgian Co-Investment Fund (GCF) and Hunnewell Partners. HeidelbergCement and Cement Invest will jointly control the resulting joint venture. The transaction will contribute in total about Euro115m to cutting HeidelbergCement’s net debt.
“The joint venture’s competitiveness will be improved with the modernisation of the Kaspi cement plant, where the construction of a modern dry kiln line already started in 2016 and is expected to be finalised by the end of 2018. The disposal is part of our portfolio review and optimisation with the goal to generate additional cash flow in order to support our disciplined growth and increase shareholder returns,” said Bernd Scheifele, chairman of the managing board of HeidelbergCement.
HeidelbergCement started operating in Georgia in 2006. The new joint venture operates three integrated cement plants, a cement grinding facility and a cement terminal on the Black Sea coast. The cement production capacity exceeds 2Mt/yr. A network of 13 ready-mixed concrete plants and two aggregate quarries supports the cement business.
Cemex USA cement plants in Florida, Georgia and California gain Energy Star Certification
22 June 2017US: Four Cemex USA cement plants have achieved the US Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star certification for 2017. The Clinchfield plant in Georgia has achieved certification for the 11th consecutive year, the Miami plant in Florida for the 7th consecutive year, the Victorville plant in California for the 6th consecutive year and the Brooksville plant in Florida for the 5th time.
"These plants follow initiatives each day to ensure they operate with sustainability in mind and lead the way in our industry. They serve as models for others to follow with their repeated recognition for their efforts. We are very proud of the work they've done to achieve Energy Star certification this year by maintaining these high standards," said Hugo Bolio, Executive Vice President, Cement Operations and Technology for Cemex USA.
Boral completes acquisition of Headwaters
09 May 2017US: Boral has completed its acquisition of Headwaters, a leading building products manufacturer and fly ash marketer in North America. Boral USA and Headwaters will form a new division to be named Boral North America, which will be headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the location of Boral’s current US headquarters.
Cement producers launch Georgian Cement Association
20 January 2017Georgia: HeidelbergCement Caucasus (HCC) and the Georgian Building Group (GBG), a subsidiary of Kavkaz Cement, have formed the Georgian Cement Association. The association intends to focus on the quality of cement sold in the country and to create a publicly-recognisable seal of quality.
Domestically produced cement will be sampled in blind tests from product purchased from the open market. Testing shall be conducted primarily by an independent and neutral laboratory, such as the Georgian Technical University, and reconfirmed by parallel testing. Additionally, the Chamber of Commerce and industry of Georgia will supervise the process. The goal of the association is to create a respected and well-recognised ‘Good Quality Seal’ that only members will be able to use on packaging and in advertising.
Other aims of the association include working with the government and appropriate official bodies to tackle industry relevant issues and to promote the industry generally through the creation of jobs and economic growth.
Georgia: Gebr Pfeiffer has received an order to supply a mill for HeidelbergCement Group’s Kaspi plant. The vertical roller mill will be used in a new 3000t/day kiln line at the site. The order was placed through the China’s Sinoma Chengdu in November 2016.
The type MPS 4000 B mill, equipped with a SLS 3750 B type classifier, has been designed for a capacity of 270t/hr of raw meal. The mill will be delivered with an enlarged housing to allow the raw material with a moisture of up to 10% to be dried almost exclusively with the available preheater gases.
Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for 2018.
HeidelbergCement starts upgrade at Kaspi Plant
29 September 2016Georgia: HeidelbergCement has started work to upgrade its Kaspi plant with a new dry-process production line. The project officially started on 27 September 2016 with Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili laying a foundation stone at the site.
“We welcome that today HeidelbergCement is starting an US$100m investment project on the Kaspi plant for full modernisation of the plant and constructing a dry line for clinker production. This project will make the production process more efficient,” said Kvirikashvili.
Georgia: Construction has started on a new US$120m cement plant in Senaki, Samegrelo. The project, Black Sea Cement, is a joint venture between China’s Hualing Group and a Georgian construction company. The plant will have a clinker production capacity of 0.9Mt/yr and a cement production capacity of 1.5Mt/yr. It is expected to create over 500 jobs. Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili launched construction of the plant on 25 June 2016.
Georgia: HeidelbergCement Caucasus has announced that it will spend US$120m on upgrading its Kaspi cement plant in the Shida Kartli region. HeidelbergCement will work with the Georgian Co-Investment Fund (GCF) and Hunnewell Partners, a private equity firm, on the project, according to government news source Agenda.ge.
Most of the budget will be spent on building a new dry cement production line at the site. The remainder will be invested towards developing the plant’s supporting network of ready-mix concrete and aggregate plants. Construction will start in July 2016 with completion intended for mid-2018. The three companies also said that they are investigating expanding their production base in west Georgia after completing the Kaspi plant expansion project.
Heidelberg Cement started operating in Georgia in 2006 after it acquired a stake of 75% in SaqCementi. It operates two integrated cement plants in Kaspi and Rustavi, a grinding plant in Poti and a cement terminal in Supsa.
