Norway: Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe has announced the launch of a new methanol-powered cement carrier in partnership with the Hartmann Group and the Norwegian NOx Fund. The vessel is scheduled to begin operation in Norway in the first quarter of 2028. It is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by up to 6000t/yr compared to conventional fossil-fuel ships. The vessel was selected following a competitive tender involving six shipping companies. The Hartmann Group will design, own and operate the vessel, with Cyprus-based InterMaritime providing technical management after delivery. In early 2025, Heidelberg Materials applied for financial support, and the project received US$5.9m from the Norwegian NOx Fund, without which the vessel would reportedly have been too costly to develop.

Knut Omreng, director of logistics at Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe, said “This vessel cuts emissions by 80% and increases our overall transport efficiency. A 10-year contract signals our willingness to support innovation and build lasting partnerships.”

Azerbaijan: The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has called on governments at the COP29 climate conference to support the decarbonisation of the cement industry. The association published its Net Zero Progress Report 2024/25 to coincide with the conference. The report details the ‘extensive decarbonisation work’ currently underway in the industry, including accelerating carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), switching to renewable energy sources, advancing the circular economy and reducing cement’s clinker factor. The sector expects to commission its first net zero cement plant, following a carbon capture upgrade to Heidelberg Materials’ Brevik plant in Norway, later in 2024.

GCCA president Fernando González said “Our industry is engaged in the most significant transformation in its history. To fully unlock our decarbonisation progress in this crucial Decade to Deliver, we urgently need effective policy support."

Europe: Germany-based Heidelberg Materials has announced the launch of EvoZero carbon captured net zero cement. The company produces EvoZero cement at its Brevik cement plant in Norway. It says that this is the first cement to achieve net zero CO₂ emissions through the use of carbon capture and storage (CCUS), without relying on other methods of compensation in its carbon accounting.

Norway: Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe inaugurated its Slemmestad cement terminal in Asker on 17 November 2023. The terminal’s equipment includes 12,000t-capacity cement silos. It cost US$13.3m to build and has a loading rate of 390t/hr.
