Steppe Cement’s first-half profit booms

Kazakhstan: Steppe Cement’s consolidated revenue in the six months to 30 June 2019 grew by 34% year-on-year to US$36.5m from US$27.3m. Its operating profit before working capital changes was US$7.9m compared to US$5.3m in the corresponding period of 2018, an increase of 49%. Negative currency exchange effects reduced the cement producer’s net profit, despite a boost from the local economy and the company’s reduction of its administrative expenses.

Kazakhstan: Steppe Cement turnover grows by 34% year-on-year to US$36.7m in first half of 2019 from US$27.5m in the same period in 2018. Its cement sales volumes rose by 6% to 0.78Mt from 0.74Mt. The cement producer said that the local market declined by 3% in the reporting period. Imports represent 8% of the market and they remained stable. Exports fell by 5% to 0.87Mt.

Norm Cement to increase production for export market

Azerbaijan: Norm Cement plans to increase its clinker production in order to expand its export markets. It intends to export 1Mt in 2019, according to the Trend News Agency. In 2018 it exported 10,000t to Georgia. In 2019 it hopes to send 0.1Mt to Kazakhstan.

Eurasian Economic Union produces 12Mt of cement in first quarter of 2019

Eurasian Economic Union: The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) produced 12Mt of cement in the first quarter of 2019. Armenia produced 68,000t and imported 47,200t. Belarus produced 0.84Mt, imported 79,500t and exported 0.26Mt. Kyrgyzstan produced 0.35Mt, imported 38,600t and exported 0.15Mt. Kazakhstan produced 1.47Mt, imported 0.11Mt and exported 0.33Mt. Russia produced 9.3Mt, imported 0.18Mt and exported 0.17Mt. Usually production in the first quarter represents 16 – 19% of annual production. Consumption of cement in the EEU region is expected to grow by 2.5% year-on-year in 2019.

International Cement Group planning to expand in Asia and Africa

Singapore: International Cement Group is planning to build new cement plants in Central Asia, Africa and South-east Asia to complement China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The company, formerly known as Compact Metal Industries, has held a ceremony to mark its listing at the Singapore Stock Exchange, according to the Business Times Singapore newspaper.

The company holds a 65% stake in a 1.2Mt/yr cement plant in Tajikistan. This unit’s production capacity was recently upgraded to 1.35Mt/yr. In mid-2018 it said it was building a new plant in Kazakhstan. This project is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2019. In late 2018 the group said it had failed to buy a majority stake in a partially-built cement plant at Salamanga in Mozambique. In March 2019 the group agreed to buy a majority stake in Namibia’s Ohorongo Cement from Schwenk Namibia for US$104m.

Dal Holding to build 1.8Mt/yr cement plant in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan: Dal Holding plans to build a 1.8Mt/yr cement plant in Aktobe region for around US$270m. The project will be a joint venture with the Aktobe Civic-Entrepreneurship Company (CEC), according to Interfax. The joint venture has been created and a road map has been signed. Construction at the site is scheduled to start in April 2019. Dal Holding is an engineering company that undertakes projects in the cement, mining and energy sectors. Previously, in 2016, China’s Huaxin Cement was linked to cement projects in the region.

Steppe Cement’s sale rise by 32% to US$74.8m in 2018

Kazakhstan: Steppe Cement’s sales revenue rose by 32% year-on-year to US$74.8m in 2018 from US$56.6m in 2017. Its cement sales volumes rose by 6% to 1.72Mt from 1.63Mt. Its exports grew by 50% to 0.22Mt from 0.15Mt. Overall, the cement producer said that local cement consumption fell by 4% to 8.6Mt.

Gezhouba Shieli Cement launches oil well cement plant in Kazakhstan

12 December 2018

Kazakhstan: Gezhouba Shieli Cement has launched its 1Mt/yr oil well cement plant in the Kyzylorda region. 260 jobs have been created at the site and 48 of the local staff were trained in China. The project is a joint venture majority owned by Chinese investors with a minority stake from a local cement company. China Triumph International Engineering built the plant.

Rudny cement plant to start production

03 December 2018

Kazakhstan: The Rudny cement plant plans to start production in early December 2018. Arkhimed Mukhambetov, governor of the Kostanay region, attended the launch ceremony of the unit, according to the Trend News Agency. It has reportedly had a total investment of US$100, double the previous amount published in local media. The 0.5Mt/yr plant has been postponed several times since 2010 due to a lack of finance. The company’s director, Artem Maklasov, said that a consignment of up to 0.3Mt of cement from the plant will be sold to Ufa in Russia. Subsequently, cement from the plant will be sold in Kostanay region and in southern Russia.

SAS-Tobe Technologies increases exports to Uzbekistan

16 November 2018

Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan: Kazakhstan’s SAS-Tobe Technologies has increased its exports to Uzbekistan. It is the first Kazakh manufacturer accredited at the Uzbek Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange, according to the Podrobno News Agency. The company has sold around 1500t through the exchange in the last two months. It now plans to export over 50% of its 0.25Mt/yr production capacity.
