Zimbabwe: Industry and Commerce Minister Sekai Nzenza says that the government will continue to issue cement import permits until local production returns to normal. The situation has been blamed on a breakdown at Lafarge Zimbabwe’s cement plant, according to the Herald Zimbabwe newspaper. The company is importing cement from Zambia to compensate. A roof collapse over the mill at Lafarge Zimababwe’s Manresa plant was reported in October 2021.

Zimbabwe: Lafarge Zimbabwe says that a ‘critical’ incident occurred at its Manresa plant in Harare on 11 October 2021 when the roof collapsed over a cement mill. It reported no fatalities or injuries. However, the subsidiary of Switzerland-based Holcim warned that the incident might have an impact on its business performance for the last quarter of 2021. It added that it had already started taking action to repair the structure and restart the mills.

The Herald Zimbabwe newspaper reports that there has been a “general low visibility of the company’s cement in the market.” It added that the company started building a new cement mill at the plant in March 2021 with an expected commissioning date of March 2022.

Zimbabwe: Precious Murena has stepped down as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe to “pursue new interests outside the Holcim Group.” She was originally appointed to the role in early 2020. Amr Elmowafy Aly Mowafy, currently the chief financial officer, will assume the position of Acting CEO in the interim period until a replacement is found.

Murena joined Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe in 2011 and worked in various roles including the Industrial Relations & Welfare Manager and Human Resources & Communications Director. She was the first female Zimbabwean to become a CEO of the company.

Zimbabwe: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Lafarge Zimbabwe and China National Building Materials (CNBM) subsidiary CBMI have announced the signing of a contract for the establishment of a 0.7Mt/yr-capacity grinding plant at the 0.5Mt/yr Manresa cement plant in Harare. CBMI executive director and general manager Tong Laigou said that, when completed, the plant “will significantly increase the market occupation rate, competition and influence power of Lafarge Zimbabwe, and will also ease the cement supply tension in the country.”

Zimbabwe: The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has ordered Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe to stop operations at its integrated Harare plant due to abnormal dust emissions. As part of the order the plant has been requested to notify local stakeholders and the community of any new developments or incident that may affect them, according to the NewsDay newspaper. It will also be required to report daily dust emissions readings to the EMA every two weeks.

The cement producer said it experienced an unexpected surge in dust emissions during a trial of using saw dust as an alternative fuel at the plant between July 30 and 1 August 2020. It added that immediate action was taken to control and contain the emissions and the incident was reported to EMA in line with regulatory requirements.

Zimbabwe: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe has reported a profit of US$178m in 2019, up by 4.8% year-on-year from US$170m in 2018. Inflation-adjusted sales rose doubled to US$919m from US$449m. Cement volumes remained level at 323,000t. The company said that it, “recorded its best financial performance in over five years. The construction of a US$2m dry mortar mixing plant was completed and installation of the equipment on site is set to be completed in the second half of 2020.”

Zimbabwe: Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe has predicted a 30% year-on-year decline in sales volumes in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. All Africa News has reported that Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe is expecting to rely on foreign investment-led projects to stimulate a base level of cement demand to sustain the company’s operations.

Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe said, "The ripple effects of the lockdown and border closures are still to be fully quantified, but the business expects to continue to feel the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak into the second half of 2020."

Zimbabwe: Lafarge Zimbabwe has appointed Precious Murena-Nyika as its chief executive officer (CEO). She succeeds Siame Kaulule, who left the post in February 2020 for a new role with LafargeHolcim in South Africa, according to the News Day newspaper.

Murena-Nyika was previously director for human resources and communications at Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe. She is the immediate past president for the Institute of People Management of Zimbabwe. She holds a degree in Psychology and Masters in Business Administration from the University of Zimbabwe and a postgraduate diploma in leadership from the Harvard Business School.

Zimbabwe: Lafarge Zimbabwe’s chief executive officer (CEO) Siame Kaulule has left the company for a new role with LafargeHolcim in South Africa, according to the NewsDay newspaper. Kaulule was appointed as the head of LafargeHolcim’s Zimbabwe operations in early 2019. He succeeded Amal Naiel, who spent five years in the post.

Zimbabwe: Switzerland’s LafargeHolcim has lent US$30m in the form of a long-term loan to Lafarge Zimbabwe. The company has taken out a short-term loan of US$4.4m from a local bank, according to the Zimbabwe Independent newspaper. In its financial results for the 2018 the cement producer reported that its revenue grew by 24% year-on-year to US$72m in 2018 and that its profit before tax grew strongly to US$4.4m.
