Ambuja Cements signs memoranda of understanding for three new grinding plants in Tamil Nadu
09 January 2024India: Ambuja Cements has signed new memoranda of understanding (MoU) with the government of Tamil Nadu for the construction of three grinding plants in the state. Business Today Online News has reported that the plants are part of US$5.14bn in planned capital expenditure (CAPEX) investments in Tamil Nadu by parent company Adani Group.
Karan Adani, CEO of the group’s shipping subsidiary Adani Ports, said "Today's Tamil Nadu is a standout example of stability, a well-established industrial ecosystem, advanced infrastructure, total connectivity, safe and secure neighbourhoods, business-friendly policies with an able and efficient team of officers and a diverse and highly-skilled workforce with more women in the ranks than anywhere else in the country."
Sumitomo Osaka Cement signs agreement on Setouchi - Shikoku CO2 Hub
29 December 2023Japan: Sumitomo Osaka Cement, Sumitomo Corporation, JFE Steel, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and Woodside Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly conduct a business feasibility study looking at setting up a CO2 hub in the Setouchi and Shikoku regions. It will examine how CO2 can be collected from different industries, transported to a hub port and then shipped to Australia for sequestration. A signing of the MOU was held at the ASEAN-Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum in the presence of Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Ken Saito.
Sumitomo Osaka Cement operates two integrated plants in the Setouchi and Shikoku regions at Ako and Kochi respectively.
UltraTech Cement to invest US$120m in Bihar
14 December 2023India: UltraTech Cement has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Bihar for the investment of US$120m in the state.
Press Trust of India News has reported that the Bihar government has asked the government of India to grant the state special status in order to advance its industrial development.
Türkiye: Taiwan-based Taiwan Cement Corporation (TCC) has signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding (MoU) with OYAK Çimento. Under the MOU, the parties will enter into negotiations over the transfer of a further 20% stake in OYAK Denizli Çimento to TCC. This will raise TCC’s stake in the company to 60%. Reuters has reported the total enterprise value of OYAK Denizli Çimento as US$1.42bn.
Filinvest-ENGIE Renewable Energy Enterprise to build solar power plant at Cemex Philippines’ Cebu cement plant
20 November 2023Philippines: Filinvest-ENGIE Renewable Energy Enterprise (FREE) has won a contract with Cemex Philippines for the construction of a 10.1MW solar power plant. The Business Mirror newspaper has reported that the plant is comprised of a ground-mounted array of solar panels at Cemex Philippines’ Apo cement plant in Cebu. The solar power plant will eliminate 10,000t/yr of CO2 from the Cebu cement plant’s emissions. Additionally, the producer has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with FREE for future collaborations on renewable energy and efficiency-increasing projects around the nearby city of Naga.
Cemex Philippines president and CEO Luis Franco said “This solar energy partnership is another milestone under Cemex’s Future in Action programme, as we progress closer to our goal of reducing Scope 2 CO2 emissions to less than 24kg/t of cementitious product by 2030.” He added “We are proud to partner with FREE, a company that shares our vision to address climate change through sustainable projects. This is a win not only for Cemex, but also for the planet as we take concrete steps in making renewable energy the future of the industry.”
US: Summit Materials has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with hydrogen producer PCC Hydrogen (PCCH2). The MOU establishes an alliance to develop a fuel replacement strategy for Summit Materials’ cement production. PCCH2 will build a hydrogen plant to supply green hydrogen at a cement plant belonging to Summit Materials subsidiary Continental Cement.

Samsung Engineering and Svante enter memorandum of understanding for carbon capture in Asia and the Middle East
06 October 2023Asia/Middle East: South Korea-based Samsung Engineering and Canada-based Svante have signed a new memorandum of understanding (MoU). Under the MoU, the companies will collaborate on the development and deployment of carbon capture technology in cement and other industries in Asia and the Middle East.
Svante President and CEO Claude Letourneau said “Samsung Engineering’s more than 50 years of experience in the energy and industrial sectors will be invaluable as we continue to rapidly expand our operations and filter production capabilities.”
Wonder Cement to build US$66.4m cement facility in Gujarat
09 August 2023India: Wonder Cement has concluded a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with authorities to build a cement production facility in Desar, Gujarat. The Times of India newspaper has reported that the producer plans to invest US$66.4m in the new facility.
Malaysia: YTL Cement and Thailand-based SCG have signed a memorandum of understanding with Innocement, a joint venture between the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA). The agreement is intended to strengthen the cement supply chain, secure the reliability of supply and stabilise prices in the region, according to the Star newspaper. In January 2023 representatives of the SEDC and the BDA had visited SCG in Bangkok. At this time it was reported that a joint venture between the SEDC and the BDA wanted to import 0.5 – 1Mt/yr of cement from SCG.
Greece: The IFESTOS carbon capture project at Titan Group's Kamari cement plant was among eight CO2 emissions-reducing projects chosen for funding following the latest EU Innovation Fund call for projects. IFESTOS consists of a planned 1.9Mt/yr carbon capture installation at the Kamari plant. Titan Group says that it has concluded necessary memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with suppliers. The IFESTOS project will receive a share of a funding pot worth a total Euro3.6bn.
