Paris council halts Lafarge France Bercy expansion plans

08 October 2020

France: The council of Paris has voted to withdraw permissions for a planned expansion to LafargeHolcim subsidiary Lafarge France’s Bercy concrete plant after protesters captured footage of a slurry spill that the company called ‘exceptional.’

Finanznachrichten News has reported that the council also voted to launch a “mission to reassess cement and building materials production by 2040” to preserve the local environment, as a result of which it expects the city to shift its reliance to imports of cement and concrete from surrounding areas.

BUA Cement begins construction of Guyuk plant

06 October 2020

Nigeria: BUA Cement has broken ground at the site of its upcoming 3.0Mt/yr-capacity integrated cement plant in Guyuk, Adamawa State. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri proposed nearby Yola as the site for a second BUA Cement plant in the state, which he said would “further diversify the economy away from sole reliance on petroleum products.”

The company is currently building a 50MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant in Lamurde, Adamawa State.

Boral plans to expand Marulan South quarry to 4.0Mt/yr

05 October 2020

Australia: Boral plans to increase raw limestone production at its Marulan South quarry in New South Wales to 4.0Mt/yr. Additionally, the company will increase aggregate extraction at the site to 1.0Mt/yr. The Goulburn Post reports that the new South Wales state government has agreed to the US$3.23m upgrade on condition that the building materials company upgrades and realigns a local access road to improve safety. Boral originally applied to expand the open cast mine in 2018.

Maple Leaf Cement to expand waste heat recovery unit at Iskanderabad plant

Pakistan: Maple Leaf Cement plans to expand the waste heat recovery (WHR) unit to 25MW at its integrated Iskanderabad plant. The project is scheduled for completion in September 2021. It has a projected budget of around US$11m.

Secil Group signs waste heat recovery plant contract with CTP Team

29 September 2020

Portugal: Secil Group has engaged Italy-based CTP Team to supply and install a 29MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant at its 2.0Mt/yr Secil-Outão cement plant in Setúbal, Lisboa Region. Dry Cargo International News has reported that the WHR plant will include a 7.2MW Turboden turbine. CTP Team says that, when operational in mid-2022, the plant will cover 30% of the Secil-Outão cement plant’s electricity consumption, reducing its CO2 emissions by 14,000t/yr.

CTP Team said, “Thanks to the specific advantages of organic cycles and to the total absence of water treatments in the process, the operating expenditure (OPEX) is 75% lower than for an equivalent steam rankine-based WHR cycle.

Welding Alloys repairs vertical roller mill at Hanson’s Purfleet slag plant

UK: Welding Alloys says that it has carried out maintenance on a vertical roller mill at HeidelbergCement subsidiary Hanson’s 1.0Mt/yr Purfleet slag plant in Essex, repairing the mill’s Loesche 46 2+2S grinding table and rollers. The company said that the mill, which had ground 3500t of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), was “in urgent need of refurbishment.” Following a wear audit, Welding Alloys took the grinding components back to the profile template using its Integra Wire Mill products.

The group said that “both companies overcame the challenges of completing the project within the limited shutdown period while complying with the Covid-19 lockdown measures.”

Aravan Cement Plant considering third production line in Kyrgyzstan

23 September 2020

Kyrgyzstan: Aravan Cement Plant, part of the Southern Combine of Building Materials, is considering building a third production line with a capacity of 1.5Mt/yr. Plant director Kubanychbek Turdubaev made the announcement to Kyrgyzstan Newsline in a discussion reflecting on the completion of the unit’s second line in 2018, which increased total capacity to 1Mt/yr. The Russian-Kyrgyz Development Fund (RKDF) provided a loan for that project and the company intends to continue the relationship for the next one. China-based Tianjin Cement Industry Design and Research Institute (Sinoma TCDRI) and the Nanjing Long-W Energy Conservation Engineering were also involved. At present the plant sells half of its cement domestically and exports the rest.

Çimsa Çimento hires DAL Teknik Makina for Mersin cement plant upgrade

Turkey: DAL Teknik Makina says that Çimsa Çimento has engaged its services for a cyclone replacement at its 3.4Mt/yr Mersin cement plant in Mersin Province. The upgrade consists of “modification of the first and second-stage cyclones and riser ducts in the first clinker production line, downcomer ducts modification, dip tubes, pendulum flaps, meal pipes and splash boxes installation and refractory procurement and installation.”

The group said, “The modification project will allow electrical and a small amount of heat energy reduction by reducing pressure drop and improving separation efficiency of the cyclones.”

Ash Grove Cement to upgrade Port Manatee cement terminal

23 September 2020

US: CRH subsidiary Ash Grove Cement says that it is undertaking an upgrade of its Port Manatee, Florida deep water cement terminal to install a high capacity FLSmidth Kovako unloader and modernise existing material transfer and electrical systems, as well as establishing self-loading capabilities. The aim of the upgrade is “to improve Ash Grove’s capacity to import cement clinker, slag and fly ash to meet the existing and future needs of customers in the Florida and South Georgia markets.

Regional president Monica Manolas said, “The underlying fundamentals in the Florida market are positive with good population and employment growth. The upgrade of the Port Manatee import terminal will expand our capabilities and strengthen our ability to meet growing demand in the region.”

The company says that construction will begin in early 2021 and the upgraded terminal will open in late 2021.

Sustained Visions, Qazax Sement Zavodu and DAL Teknik Makina commission 1.3Mt/yr Gazakh cement plant

16 September 2020

Azerbaijan: Germany-based Sustained Visions has announced the commissioning of Akkord Cement subsidiary Qazax Sement Zavodu’s 1.3Mt/yr-capacity integrated Gazakh cement plant in Ganja-Gazakh region following a phase-two upgrade completed in collaboration with the owner and DAL Holding subsidiary DAL Teknik Makina. The plant, built in 2013, had an original capacity of 0.9Mt/yr.

Sustained Visions praised the collaborative effort, which has resulted in a “significant reduction in specific energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions” for the plant, and “shows very stable performance.” Managing director Ralf Slomski noted that, in spite of the coronavirus outbreak, the company was able to maintain a project management team of five staff on the site at peak periods.
