India: Birla Corporation has commissioned a 28MW solar power plant at a cement plant in Uttar Pradesh. EQ International has reported that Waaree Energies supplied 330kW and 335kW solar modules for the project. The subsidiary of Waaree Group is one of the largest solar photovoltaic module manufacturers in the country.
Dalmia Cement among Indian companies tightening safety measures amid second coronavirus spike
08 April 2021India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement and other companies are introducing a raft of new safety measures to counteract an increase in coronavirus cases, according to the Economic Times newspaper. The companies’ efforts include creating bio-bubbles for workers, reintroducing working from home where possible, changing shift patterns, conducting rapid testing and, not allowing outsiders into facilities without a negative coronavirus test and organising vaccination stations.
JK Lakshmi Cement launches Show Strength campaign
08 April 2021India: JK Lakshmi Cement has launched an advertising campaign called ‘Show Strength.’ The campaign draws attention to the strength of the company’s cements while encouraging Indians to rely on the strength of their own effort and expertise to overcome the negativity holding the country back, according to Exchange4media. The advertising agency involved with the promotion said, “Show Strength captures the brand’s values, leadership stance and social intent. We are hoping to bring in desired results for the company through this campaign.”
India: Aditya Birla subsidiary Grasim Industries has raised US$136m through fully paid unsecured non-convertible debentures (NCDs). The company has allotted the NCDs on a private placement basis.
Pakistan resumes trade with India
01 April 2021Pakistan/India: Pakistan has resumed trade with India following a hiatus since August 2019. The News International has reported that during the last full year of trading in 2018 Pakistan exported US$63m of cement and US$19m of gypsum to India.
India: RK Group subsidiary Wonder Cement has appointed Kiran Patil as its managing director. He succeeds Jagdish Chandra Toshniwal, who has retired, according to the Free Press Journal newspaper. Patil will work at the company’s headquarters in Udaipur, Rajasthan. He previously worked as a mechanical engineer and, prior to joining Wonder Cement, he worked as the chief manufacturing officer for ACC in Mumbai. He has worked with Ultratech Cement, Lafarge India and Tata Steel.
Prism Johnson commissions waste heat recovery plant and solar power plant at Prism cement plant
31 March 2021India: Prism Cement has established a 12MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant and 10MW solar power plant at its 6.1Mt/yr-capacity integrated Prism cement plant in Satna, Madhya Pradesh. The plant’s total WHR capacity now totals 22MW, with a total of 23MW solar power capacity. The measures are part of the producer’s sustainability initiatives, by which it aims to reduce its reliance on non-renewables.
India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement has commenced commercial production of cement at the new 2.3Mt/yr production line of its Bengal Cement Works cement plant in Midnapore, West Bengal. The new line brings the plant’s total capacity to 4Mt/yr.
Chief operating officer Ujjwal Batria said, “To ensure that demand is met in a sustainable manner, we have deployed the latest machinery and technology at our Bengal Cement Works unit and will be aiming to produce 100% blended cement. This step is also in line with our commitment to become carbon negative by 2040.” He added, “Post the lockdown-led demand disruption, the cement sector has been continuously witnessing buoyancy across the country. This is largely led by revival in demand from the infrastructure and urban housing sectors, along with the demand from individual homebuilders and the government's rural housing schemes especially from east and central regions. Hence, the onset of commercial production at the Bengal Cement Works unit will enhance our ability to contribute towards nation building and Atmanirbhar Bharat, while also catering to the growing demand from the eastern and north-eastern states of the country.”
India: Germany-based Gebr. Pfeiffer has won a contract to supply a vertical roller mill for grinding coal to Deccan Cement’s Bhavanipuram cement plant in Andhra Pradesh. Gebr. Pfeiffer India will be responsible for processing the order and supervising production and installation at the plant’s 3500t/day kiln line. The mill will be the company’s second from the supplier. It chose an MPS 250 BK mill, which can also grind petcoke or a mixture of coal and petcoke. Commissioning is scheduled for before mid-June 2022.
ACC wins Climate Action Programme 2.0° Orientated award
23 March 2021India: The Climate Action Programme 2.0° has awarded ACC its Orientated award for efforts towards CO2 emissions reduction. United News of India has reported that the award assesses companies on the basis of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s climate-maturity model and the Business Excellence Framework. ACC claimed the national award in the energy, mining and heavy industries category.
Managing director and chief executive officer Sridhar Balakrishnan said, "Sustainable construction and environmental conservation are our core corporate objectives. Through our consistent focus on sustainable business practices, we have emerged as one of the companies with the lowest carbon footprints in the cement industry. This award will motivate us further to continue working towards building a greener planet."
