India: Udaipur Cement Works plans to raise US$114m through an issuance of non-convertible debentures (NCDs). India Infoline News Service has reported that the company will use the money it raises to fund Phase 1 of its on-going expansion project.

India: Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has reported a 59.2% decline in its consolidated net profit to US$9.7m for the three months to 31 December 2021. The company had posted a net profit of US$23.6m during the corresponding quarter of 2020. The company reported that its revenue for the quarter was almost unchanged year-on-year at US$363m. The company’s cement sales volumes fell to 5.7Mt during the quarter compared to 5.8Mt in a year earlier.

Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Managing Director and chief executive officer (CEO) Mahendra Singhi said, “Margins during the quarter were impacted due to a significant inflation in the energy prices and market weakness in core regions of our operation. However, beginning in mid-December, things have started to look good. To mitigate the impact of external exigencies, we are working to further strengthen our operational efficiencies and explore avenues for cost rationalisation.”

India: Ramco Cements plans to commission a new 2.5Mt/yr clinker production line at its new plant near Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh in February 2022. A 1Mt/yr grinding unit, 12MW waste heat recovery system and 18MW captive power unit at the plant are expected to be commissioned in the 2022 – 2023 financial year, which starts in April 2022.

The cement producer also intends to commission at upgrade to its Nagar cement plant in the 2023 – 2024 financial year. The US$63m project includes installing a new 300t/day kiln at the plant in Tamil Nadu.

Sri Lanka: The National Construction Association of Sri Lanka (NCASL) claims that no quality control checks are being conducted on imports of cement. The association says that there are labels printed on cement bags confirming that they were quality checked by the Sri Lanka Standard Institute (SLSI) but that it has no evidence of such checks actually being carried out, according to the Sri Lankan Daily Mirror newspaper. It has asked for the authorities to show evidence that the quality control checks are actually taking place.

Sri Lanka faced a shortage of cement in the autumn of 2021 due to input cost rises, supply chain disruption and negative exchange rates effects. The NCASL reports that most cement imports come from India or Pakistan.

India: Birla Corporation has started the kiln at its new 3.9Mt/yr Mukutban cement plant at Nagpur in Maharashtra. The project had an investment of around US$370m and the plant will be run by subsidiary RCCPL. Birla Corporation said that the new plant is the group’s fourth integrated plant and the biggest single cement production line in Maharashtra by capacity. It will be powered by two 20MW captive power plants that use air-cooled condenser technology to reduce water consumption by 90%. The plant was partly built using the group’s MP Birla Cement Perfect Plus product, a Portland Pozzolana Cement, composed of 30 - 35% fly ash, itself a by-product of thermal power plants. Use of fly ash and slag will be scaled up at the site as production ramps up.

“It is no mean feat to complete such a large project under such challenging circumstances with major disruptions on account of Covid-19 which led to several logistical challenges, stoppage of work and a flight of labour from the project site on several occasions,” said Harsh V Lodha, the chair of Birla Group. “Moreover, to achieve 10m man hours of construction with zero accidents and completion of the entire project without a single major accident or fatality, I am told, is a unique achievement in the cement industry.”

India: UltraTech Cement plans to invest US$129m in capacity expansion projects in order to increase the production capacity of its Birla White brand white cement by 93% to 12.5Mt/yr from 6.5Mt/yr. The Aditya Birla subsidiary says that it will commission the new capacity in a phased manner. The investment aims to strengthen Birla White cement’s presence in the growing white cement market and to reduce its dependence on high-cost imports.

India: UltraTech Cement recorded consolidated sales of US$1.74bn in the third quarter of the 2022 financial year, up by 5.8% year-on-year. Its net profit in the quarter was US$229bn.

The Business Standard newspaper reported that the producer maintained a strong cement volumes growth trajectory, with 13% year-on-year cement sales growth throughout the first nine months of the 2022 financial year.

India: UltraTech Cement has commissioned the new 2Mt/yr Line 2 of its Bara grinding plant in Uttar Pradesh. The additional capacity will help the company to serve the growing Central Indian cement market. Its total installed capacity is now 115Mt/yr, up by 2.9% year-on-year from 111Mt.

UltraTech Cement says that the Bara grinding plant, which opened in January 2020, operated at 80% capacity utilisation in the 2020 financial year.

India: Axis Bank subsidiary Axis Securities has predicted a 4 – 6% year-on-year drop in Indian cement sales volumes during the third quarter of the 2022 financial year, which ended on 31 December 2021. The Hindu newspaper has reported the reasons for the predicted drop as extended monsoons, especially in the south of the country, and a construction ban in the National Capital Region due to pollution. Monthly sales grew slightly year-on-year in December 2021.

Axis Securities has also forecast a revival of demand in the fourth-quarter, driven by infrastructure and housing projects. Overall, it expects national demand for cement to grow by 8 – 9% in the 2022 financial year.

India: Locals in Odisha’s Malkangiri district gathered in the town of Katamataru on 9 January 2022 to protest plans for the establishment of a new Dalmia Cement (Bharat) cement plant in the area. The New Indian Express newspaper has reported that protestors allege that the state government did not conduct the proper tendering procedures for the proposed plant. More than 2000 people, wielding traditional tribal weaponry, gathered at an assembly. They resolved not to vote at upcoming village council elections if the government continues not to listen to their objections.
