Green360 Technologies launches commercial metakaolin run

10 July 2025

Australia: Green360 Technologies has launched a 457t bulk calcining run of high-purity kaolin from its Pittong operation in Victoria to produce high-reactivity metakaolin as a substitute for Portland cement.

The calcined product, made from raw ore and reclaimed tailings, will be despatched for testing by industry and government partners. Assessments will focus on compressive strength, durability and resistance to environmental stressors.

Executive chair Aaron Banks said “We have rapidly moved from laboratory-scale testing to now producing commercial quantities of our innovative, high-quality metakaolin product.”

He added “Our low-carbon cement formulations and high-quality, advanced metakaolin can help potential customers, from government to private industry, reduce their usage of Portland cement without compromising on performance or cost.”

Zeotech appoints James Marsh as CEO

21 August 2024

Australia: Zeolite, kaolin and metakaolin producer Zeotech has appointed James Marsh as its new CEO, effective from 9 September 2024. Current CEO Scott Burkhart will then transition to chief operating officer. The appointment is intended to support Zeotech’s entry into large-scale production of high reactivity metakaolin for use in cement and concrete.

Marsh is a director of Australian Kaolin. He previously worked as executive director sales and marketing at Andromeda Metals, after holding managerial roles at multiple minerals companies. He has a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Physics from the University of the West of England, UK.

Managing Director Peter Zardo said "James' technical experience in the industrial mineral and cement industries, especially metakaolin, will be pivotal in accelerating Zeotech's goal of becoming a significant supplier of premium supplementary cementitious materials. Queensland-based leadership is critical to achieving the Company's objectives as we ramp up work programmes and industry engagement, and James will play an essential hands-on role in executing Zeotech's strategy."

James Marsh said "I'm excited to join Zeotech at a crucial stage of the company's strategy, where I can utilise my experience and connections to make it a significant player in decarbonising the construction industry."

University of Aveiro researchers develop eco-cement using cellulose waste

15 March 2019

Portugal: Researchers at the Department of Materials Engineering and Ceramics at the University of Aveiro have developed a so-called ‘eco-cement’ that uses waste cellulose and clay. The cement type uses waste from the pulp industry such as ash and lime grains. This makes up 70% of its composition with the remaining 30% being metakaolin clay. The cement can be manufactured at room temperature reducing its energy consumption massively compared to Ordinary Portland Cement. The research team includes Manfredi Saeli, Rui Novais, Paula Seabra and João Labrincha.
